- As a Russian prisoner of war British born, Ukrainian marine Aiden Aslin was beaten, tortured, and forced to record propaganda videos. Aslin was initially sentenced to death but released last year in a prisoner swap.
Now he's telling his story of survival. Europe correspondent Steve Cannane met up with him in Ukraine.

He doesn't meet any of the criteria of a mercenary. He was a member of Ukrainian 36th Separate Marine Brigade, which is in the Ukrainian Navy.

Ukraine proved to be a slaughterhouse not only for hapless Ukrainian conscripts, but even for foreign mercenaries. For hapless Ukrainian conscripts surrender to the Russians is the only chance to survive. They are treated by the Russians exceptionally well. Sadly it's not that easy. Zelenskyy regime is notorious for summary executions of its soldiers for attempted surrender or retreat. You can find even on youtube videos of endless cemeteries of Ukrainian soldiers across Ukraine. WSJ is describing Zelenskyy mobilization in this way: "Mr. Zelensky in January introduced even harsher punishment for desertion and disobedience . A disabled person was drafted in western Ukraine and pronounced fit for service despite having no hands. Another died on the front lines within a month of mobilization after 10 days of training, according to his relatives." Zelenskyy is officially catching and forced conscripting even disabled. When such people are in the trenches let alone forced to go on the offensive, it means that the front can collapse at any moment. Zelenskyy's strategy reminds a strategy of one Austrian artist in 1945.

Well, the great and powerful Russia with it's mighty army planned this war for years and wanted to conquer Ukraine quickly. One and a half years later, hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled the country to not be drafted, the war is still going, and the Russian army is in such a desolate state that they force convicts to fight, civilians (for some good ethnic cleansing) and hire mercenaries. Doesn't sound like winning to me.
