These days there are so many alluring distractions to detract our attention away from our art that it can feel impossible to get to work on what matters.
We start the day out answering emails, catching up on our social media time lines, responding to comments, scrolling through Instagram, pwning some noobs in Call of Duty, sharing some memes, maybe watching a few cat videos on UA-cam - and before we know the whole day is wasted.
It all comes down to dopamine - the neural transmitter in our brain the tickles it's reward center and tell us we're doing a good job. Problem is, we've got all sorts of things falsely setting dopamine off, draining our receptors and leaving us with a sense of achievement that isn't attached to any worthy accomplishment.
Once upon a time, things like drawing were what rightly delivered us that feel good hit of dopamine - so that we'd keep doing it. Not so much anymore. And with all these over stimulating, achievement imposters lurking around every corner, is it any wonder anything worth doing that takes effort and patience is almost impossible to stick with?
In this video I talk about how to get around that stuff so you can make progress on your projects once again, whether it be that commission you've got due in in a few days, or that comic book you've been meaning to get done.

Can't tell you how much this hits home for me.. Feels like I'm an absolute drug addict and I don't even drink or do drugs. Entertainment, junk food, porn, etc.. has gotten so refined that its essentially a hard drug. Only difference is we can't really distance ourselves from these new world drugs.. It's hard to stay on the challenging path when the easy path can be detoured by simply stepping once to the right or the left. I honestly feel overwhelmed and hopeless most days, but I have gotten some hope in the form of meditation. Meditation seems to be like push-ups for your brain. Then there is the fact that choosing the hard path is existentially kind of strange. I mean sure in the long run we will all be happier if we accomplish our goals, but seeing as we can only truly live in the present its very strange to not just take the easiest path. I guess it takes a certain masochism.

So many others are right there with you, including myself - struggling with this stuff on a daily basis. But you're right, meditation is an absolute key daily exercise we should all partake in. I feel like it'll become more and more important to train our focus and attention muscles as time goes on as well. Someday, it might be nearly impossible for some. What I have found working for me, is the idea of action leading thought and feeling instead of the other way around. Doing the right thing regardless of feelings. This has been helping me, literally just saying to myself "Your feelings don't matter, get to work". I start working - and boom, I'm in zone!

Water, and washing or airing out your feet/clean socks... you ain't kidding about those being happy things. Some times it's the simple pleasures that mean the most.

You're not wrong there my friend. We're supposed to find small moments of joy in those things.
