  • This is a video on the basics of lathe chucks. The video shows the removal and install of the chuck jaws as well as the install and removal of the chuck from the lathe. The Grizzly G4003 lathe has the D1-4 camlock mounting for the chuck. In the video you will see how this system of mounting works.

Thank you ! This was very helpful for me with my new precision Matthews pm1130 V with d1 cam lock type chuck … the manual that was sent with it had the old style chuck so I had no clue as to how to remove and change out to my 4 jaw or m5 until I watched your video .. God bless you sir

Looks like most hobby lathes don't have the camlock. Used in large lathes.

Don’t use a hammer to loosen the chuck after opening the cams. One or more cams are not completely loose. The only real problem with the D1 camlok spindles are that the mark is only approximately where the full unlock position is. Sometimes you have to go around and wiggle the cams a bit to get them to completely release. The short taper is self releasing and doesn’t grab.
Are you going to test a high precision pin in the jaws? I normally use a 1”. Testing runout on the outside of the chuck is nice, but what matters is the runout of the jaws.

Hi Mel, Thanks for the reply. I will try a 1" pin in the jaws. What kind of runout are you getting with your chuck?

@@zelko44077 I recently bought a new 8” Buck Adjust-Tru. I’m getting about 0.0002” runout at 1”. That holds pretty well until about a 3” dia, where it falls to about 0.0003”. At that point I’d have to use a larger pin. The pin used needs to have a better than 0.0001” runout to be useful at those tolerances.

Hi, nice video and a good help to everyone. Thank you. Now, In the front of chuck you have 2 bolts between each claw and near the chuck center (min: 2:29). Do you know what for are those bolts? Are those bolts to fine tune the running true of chuck? If not, how to adjust the true of chuck? Thank you and congrats for video.

Hi, The bolts are for the assembly of the chuck. They are not for fine tuning. Most of the less expensive chucks do not have a feature for fine tuning. I did see a video about adjusting a chuck of this type. This is the link: ua-cam.com/video/gCUkJydSmdA/v-deo.html
      Hope this helps.

good video and thank you for the info but the way u put the camera on your head and the way it moved started to give me motion sickness
if u mounted the cam in a good position thats not moving so much and abit more lighting it would have taken the vid to the next level

I agree. I retired the head mount for the camera. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I am not sure. Most likely made in Taiwan.

Made in China trên máy luôn kìa bạn. Grizzly là công ty Mỹ nhưng gia công hàng ở TQ. Cái chuck này nếu đúng hàng Mỹ thì cỡ 500UsD rồi.
