- so myself and gill had the day off and I thought "hey, why not teach her how to operate a 20 ton excavator" such a fun video. enjoy everyone.

Gill is a keeper = Seems incredibly sweet and definitely loves you to give the excavator a try on camera - and she did incredibly well for her first time running the bucket. GirlPower!
Why teach?
I took my wife and put her in the excavator and said here ya go.
It was a big field and nothing she could hurt. Only thing I showed her was how to shut off if something wild happened.
10 min later she was doing great.
15 more minutes she thought she was a pro.
The next day I woke up she wasn’t in bed. I hear something running outside.
I look out window and no joke she dug out a swimming pool.
This didn’t go as planned
( as some think is a joke. It wasn’t.
Her grade wasn’t perfect. But over the years I said it’s a pain to dig it out. I just don’t wanna work and day then come home and work.
It was a fluke I had brought the excavator home that weekend to clean up and bring to a new job Monday. I’m still at a loss how she got it off trailer but however she did it)
I admit since then I have learned one thing. Woman keep machines/inside much more clean then men.

meanwhile guys with 5-7 years of experience in all kinds of machines have a hard time finding a good employer. #equality.
This reminds me of the very first time I ran an excavator. I work for my dad, so one day he literally brought out our excavator to an empty field and gave me the keys. All he said is "Have fun and it's time to learn new things". When I first started I was so slow, was literally thinking every step to do through my head before doing it, and was taking the smallest scoops of dirt ever. And even now after 3-4 years of running our excavator, looking back I have improved dramatically. But I am still learning and improving on getting more efficient with running the excavator. But if you get anything out of this is that, don't stop trying or working towards something because it's difficult. Think of it as every day you are jumping over new boundaries to improve and one day you will be running the equipment like a pro.
I think it's awesome that she was willing to run the excavator. My wife would have passed for sure.

I used to haul equipment for a rental company. My wife would love it when I'd bring machines home, for the weekend. Mini excavators were her favorite yard toys.

Nobody gets in any machine the first time and instantly becomes a pro. It takes seat time to become an operator and even then there is more to it than just moving dirt. I think she did great, slow steady movements and taking her time to learn the controls. Thumbs up.👍

Ok, I'm a girl. I bought my own skid steer and taught myself how to operate it. I love it. Since buying it, men have seen me and put me on other equipment, similar to your cat size ect. he put me in his case on the river bank reaching up the hill about 70' pulling it down to make a road. Butt puckering but I gave it a shot. So what I have to say to you girl u'll get the bug and he won't b able to get u out of it.
It’s cool that she’s into it, practice makes perfect I was just as slow when I started now I can load a truck in less than two minutes

Well done!!The look on your face as you were operating the machine reminded me of the feral look of accomplishment on my wife's face in 1990 as she drove my 500HP W model Kenworth prime mover(tractor) back home through the afternoon traffic after qualifying.
For some reason seeing a learner first hand reminds you of the skill necessary to operate large machinery , you forget .

At 16 my dad was a bricklayer And i use to come with him to work as a labour picking up garabge around the sites 20 homes ..30 homes Get coffee and hot plates for the guys up on the roofs etc And was told keep the change etc I was pulling in $700 a week 20+ years ago
One day the guy that ran the shovel showed up drunk The boss told him..I dont need you That kid over there works harder than you do ..a matter of fact He just replaced you...Hey kid come here for a sec ..Want to make more money? I'll teach you how to fill dump trucks ....My first day I was filling the trucks My movements were still robotic than fluid But i did it safe and pretty quick Only made 1 mistake I dug too deep all in one go and blew a line ..Which we had a replacement and i offered to change it I worked the excavator for 9 days till my dad had to move on to another city site You know how fun it was to do this? I would of done it for free Oh and i got to tell a older guy to get my coke and bag of chips from the coffee truck ..

Cool. Like the way you gave her a chance to get used to the controls at her own pace. She was so game! I wonder though, if after she got an idea of the joysticks, what she could have done if you gave her some pointers on the best way to get a full bucket. She did great. #girlpower

Considering this seems to be the first time she drives one she is pretty quick and well coordinated. Would you rather have someone who crashes ahead before getting used to the controls?

GIRL POWER, she sure makes that 170 look good, its nice you begin to teack her now the day might just come when she is the fill in driver/loader, she did great , a 170 normally doesn't run that slow but safety first, thanks to Gill for a new propesective on girl power

If she wants to learn, more power to her. Like you said a careful/ cautious operator is good started. Speed will come with experience.

Running most of these big machines is not really all that hard. Most of the [main] controls are very straight forward and could be safely and effectivly handled by any reasonably intelligent and responsible teenager (do those even exist any more?). The hard part, again for most of these machines, is not the controls themselves but developing the mind-eye-hand coordination that makes the machine almost literally just an extension of your mind and body. This is not a requirement for operating said machines, but the more you can integrate the controls into your subconcious, the better you can operate the machine. For some people, as myself, this is a natural talent, for others, it's near impossible.

Girl power. The best thing I got taught on an excavator was don't think about it but go slow on the controls & it will come to u with out thinking about it. But good job. Keep getting her on it. Maybe through her off an put her in the backhoe on John Deere controls lol
Smart move. I couldn't care less about you running the excavator but I would watch her do just about anything. She's a keeper because she is willing to try it. My wife just takes my check when I am done.

never drove an excavator, but i drive forklifts and backhoes and she seemed pretty smooth on the controls yea slow but the smoothness is what caught me

My wife is very posh upper management. Never had shown interest in my “man toys.” Well one day I was working at full capacity no one to help get me up in the air. I called her and said “I need your help.” She had never touched controls and I need all the way up on homemade cherry picker. Well she got in my “track thing” and after one time of telling her how, she aced it! I’m alive! It’s a woman thing.
Yeah Cool , She wants to learn , Everyone had to start somewhere , Most women wouldn't even want try it , She showed respect for the machine , one wrong move and could have serious effects , slow and steady , with time she'd be moving dirt , loading trucks , digging trenches , setting pipe , digging foundations like a PRO !

My cousin had a golden, we'd put an 8-foot ladder up to the side of the mason dump and throw a tennis ball in it and the dog would climb up the ladder and get the tennis ball. He'd also stand on his back Paws in the swimming pool in the shallow end, just stand there with his head above water like a person. Awesome dogs.

A conscientious operator such as her will make a excellent operator after more practice to gain more confidence. Women tend to care more about the job they do and look after the equipment they run.
