They actually do a pretty remarkable job weaving all the elements into a cohesive journey. Production is bang on as well. It’s warm and earthy. Love releases that challenge you.
Yes! Another review I was desperately waiting for. My introduction to BI's music took place on a previous 'What's Hot with SoT' episode. Tremendous discovery.
If you want to check out another amazing album I suggest "Kinship" from Iotunn, a prog death metal band from Faroe Islands and Denmark. Jon Aldará (Barren Earth / Hamferð) is the vocalist combining clean vocals and growls
Glad you reviewed this Pete. Saw Blood Incantation last year open for Gorguts and Cannibal Corpse and they were solid. Absolute Elsewhere lives up to the hype. Great album. 4.5/5 🤘🏻
I'm not a Death Metal guy by any stretch of the imagination. I generally don't enjoy death growls and extreme vocals. I fell in love with this album. I think what I don't like about Death Metal proper is the fatigue I get from the lack of variety. I get pummeled by intensity and there is no real relief or payoff. This is a different animal. The disparate elements are weaved together beautifully to create a very satisfying listening experience. I've heard this referred to as "Death Side of the Moon" and I think that's pretty apt.
If you've never listened to Opeth, you should give them a try. Similar conceptually - mix of death metal with '70s prog and folk, contrasting light and dark elements. Check out "Ghost Reveries" or "Blackwater Park"
This album is my introduction to Blood Incantation, and what an introduction it is, amazing album. For me it's Opeth meets Pink Floyd. This one will be on my end of year list.
Glad to see the review. Jamie covered this well in his Review Crew episode too. It’s most likely my album of the year. Denver is putting out great extreme metal releases this year including Blood Incantation, Spectral Voice, and Black Curse. I wonder why Blood Incantation isn’t available on Laser CD. Maybe too much death metal?
This album is very likely my hard/heavy album of the year, maybe my top pick overall. I think both pieces are constructed perfectly, and The Message Tablet III is an incredible closing act. And for a prog metal record, it is very digestible--neither piece overstays its welcome. Brilliant stuff!
One of the best comments I’ve seen on this record out there has been. “If “Colors” (Between the Buried and Me) was metal’s answer to “Dark Side of the Moon” then this record is metal’s answer to “Animals””
Would you be willing to check out the new Folklore album? King Crimson and Tangerine Dream are big influences there as well. Progressive Death Metal is on the rise!
Hello Pete would you be interested in reviewing Folklore's "Self Titled" album, released this Halloween? A blend of classic prog and death metal, and full of rickenbacker/mellotron goodness.
I really liked this new Blood Incantation album. While I do think their previous album Hidden History of the Human Race is better and probably their best work, I love all the influences from Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream on this album.
I went back to this album based on this very video. While the "Stargate" songs are all well and good the "The Message" tracks are all fucking bangers. The only negative I'd mention is the middle of "The Message [Tablet II]" is way too close to the end of "Anesthetize" by Porcupine Tree.
@@30yearsoldiam1 Are you ok? I said I liked the album. If you don't care about PT that's just great. I don't really care much for them much either other than a few songs. "Anesthetize" being one. A nuanced opinion. Crazy, right?
I have their other albums. I love the mixture of elements for what it is and they for sure are among the most interesting DM bands. At least they try something different. However...I can't let go of the feeling that the material could be better. Sometimes it sounds like a DM record glued together with an ambient record. The two sounds do not flow as naturally into one another. Not as naturally as they could. Still, an interesting proposal.
I thought their last all-electronic album "Timewave Zero" from 2022 was excellent. This album, however, is all over the place and doesn't know what it wants to be.
Well, well, well Mr Pardo you have just succeeded in doing what SoT is designed to do and got me sold on this album. Just sampled I track on bandcamp and brought digital download (due to cd version being sold out). the way the different styles are woven together is amazing. They sound like how Opeth could have sounded IF they stuck to their death metal sound (growls and all) and combined the prog elements.
@@thorneto2742Häxan Sabaoth by Unaussprechlichen Kulten is worth a listen. Sanshi by Ripped to Shreds is also fantastic. If you like Swedish Death Metal like Entombed you'd like it. It's been a good year for New Wave of Traditional Heat Metal bands, from there I'd say: Throw Down the Gauntlet - Amethyst - very good fun Swiss heavy metal Be and Exist - Lucifer's Hammer - reminds me a lot of Somewhere in Time era Maiden Out in the Fields - Vendel - really good Doom/Epic Heavy Metal from Russia Warriors of Madness - Heavy Sentence (EP) - DiAnno era Maiden with Lemmy-esque vocals with Thin Lizzy twin guitar leads
Hidden history was my least favorite. I dont like tech death. They were trying to be just tech death and moreso gorguts sounding tech death in that album. I really liked absolute elsewhere because it feels like the proper follow up to starspawn. Starspawn is my favorite album by them, its atmospheric/cavern deathy, morbid angel-esque, scifi terror at its best. Besides how they got really into gorguts to write hidden history, they also got into berlin school electronic music and practiced synths for years to write timewave zero. Absolute elsewhere was their return to form from their first album in how they re-harnessed their old morbid angel space terror cavern death sound plus what they learned in electronic music and 70s prog genres. Starspawn+Timewave Zero = Absolute Elsewhere. Fuck hidden history
If you love death metal AND 70'ies prog as I do, this album is as close to pure perfection I think you can get. It is for sure great to be out there with Blood Incantation! They just showed Opeth how this particular combo should be made and I very much doubt Åkerfeldt and company can live up to that standard. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks
Well, to be fair, Opeth aren't blending Pink Floyd style prog with their brand of metal (more coming from the Genesis/Camel/Jethro Tull side of the fence)-completely different approach for both bands.
Shameless plug but that is exactly what my project Folklore is aiming for. Classic prog meets death metal. Would you be willing to give the new album a listen?
I was really into their first album (Starspawn), but since then I have liked each album a bit less than the one before, including this one. It just kind of bored me and seemed "weird for the sake of being weird" to me. It's not terrible, but it seemed really forgettable to me. I'd give it a 2/5.
Not sure I'm on board with this one. I pushed myself to get through the growly vocals. I'll never get the appeal. The music itself is outstanding, save maybe some of the drumming. If I had to rank it 3.5/5.
The Album is absolutely overrated, a mixture of standard death Metal with a simple Imitation of 70s progrock, electronic music. Weak sound, especially the drums are one muddy mess, absolutely no punch in the more extreme parts. So sorry, but this is a hyped dud!
Favourite Metal album of the year for me. Amazing.

Some guy at work told me to check this album out. I assumed that it would suck but I gave it a listen on UA-cam anyway. I bought it instantly.
This album is my introduction to Blood Incantation, and what an introduction it is, amazing album. For me it's Opeth meets Pink Floyd. This one will be on my end of year list.
Try listening to Gorguts, they owe a debt to them. Especially their later albums.
Great review, great album. Love it.

After falling in love with this album.
The rest of the discography is worth checking out too.
Nice album and gz to 100k 🥳🥳🥳
Blood Incantation and Iotunn are currently vying it out for my AOTY....Let's see what Opeth deliver in Nov aswell!
This album is amazing top 5 album off the year for me amongst so many good albums from 2024 .

Great episode! Keep being awesome Pete! You described it in perfect words. Blood incantation is such a breath of fresh air
Probably my metal AOTY - great review
You obviously haven't heard the album 'Kinship' from Denmark/Faroe Island band Iotunn
@ I’ve heard it, killer stuff. Probably my #2 or #3 at this point for the year
Album of the year
Great review! I'm very inrigued by this great album. Will see them on this tour when they are coming to Sweden next year.
Great album. I've been a fan since Starspawn (2016), and they just keep getting better with each release.
Same here.
This album is awesome easily one of my favorite albums of the year
Oooook, will do… and I’ll come back with my impressions. Thanks!
Album of the year!
This is the album that is making me more open to death metal
as I love prog and death metal! i love this band!
Album of the year 2024 🤘
*haven't heard the new Opeth yet tho
Good album. I could hear some Tangerine Dream vibes, King Crimson influences,a bit of Ozric Tentacles and some Gorguts style death metal. Good stuff.

I see it as a progression of Voivod. Great album.
This album is probably the most divisive death metal album out right now. Holy shit. 😂

Easily the best metal album of the 20's thus far.
Love this album. Towards the middle, it almost sounds like it could fit into Pink Floyd Animals.
The reaction to this album has been completely over the top in my opinion. Not AOTY material but it's solid
