    Re Brandon's call, I think it would be easier to acknowledge that "design" does not have to involve intelligence or intent; that there is "unintelligent design" -- exemplified by natural selection. That is the beauty of Darwin's theory -- design without a designer.

    Actually, engineers designing the shape of wings for airplanes often use an optimization process that is very similar to natural evolution (called evolutionary/genetic algorithms).

    • @cfreinheimer
      @cfreinheimer 3 роки тому +1

      We based our design on bird’s wings but that doesn’t mean that the their wings were designed.

    • @helgefan8994
      @helgefan8994 3 роки тому +2

      @@cfreinheimer I agree! This just demonstrates that natural evolution works automatically without the need for a designer. And it works not just in nature, but can even be implemented in computers as an optimization algorithm. Nowadays engineers often exploit it for design optimization, because it‘s a good method for approaching a global optimum in complicated landscapes with many local „false“ optima that present a big problem for classical optimization algorithms.

    Some reptiles 100's of millions ago increased their metabolism so at to minimize the time they had to bask in the sun to warm up, and eventually became warm-blooded. Each degree or even each fraction of a degree was an evolutionary advantage. Some of these developed hollow bones which allowed additional absorption of oxygen, eventually leading to a "flow-thru" style of breathing much more efficient than humans'. And in order to hold in the heat, developed insulation in the form of feathers.
    These reptiles became so much different that we call these dinosaurs. Some feathers shifted from being fuzzy (down) and grew flat, which allowed for such things as colorful markings for sexual selection.
    While having cold-blooded reptiles sit on their eggs would not benefit the eggs, having warm-blooded dinosaur bodies do so is an advance. Some of the these flat feathers on the arms grew longer and reached back, making a better covering for the eggs. Thus wings evolved before flight and any increase in the length of the feathers was good.
    Having wings on flightless animals was advantage in other respects. Flightless ostriches for example, use their wings to make turns faster. Using the wings to help maintain balance while straddling prey also in an advantage.
    And short wings allow running bipeds to provide a bit of lift, making a faster runner. Ditto for jumping, which eventually led to gliding. It only takes a little bit of change to go from a very efficient glider to an awkward flyer but once a species begins to fly a little, evolution can increase the efficiency in tiny steps.
    And the hollow bones and efficient breathing system becomes a real advantage to animals that fly, even though neither was designed by evolution for that purpose originally.

    The "Gregorian" calendar is really the Julian calendar. Pope Gregory was just the guy that adjusted the days on the calendar to make it better align with the actual days. That's it. Its still the same calendar Julius Caesar developed in 46 BCE.

    If you find a wing and a metal wing. Well did you find the mammal, insect said natural wing is/was attached to? If I found just a wing, I’d not know what it was capable of doing. And how often do giant pieces of metal turn up? Even in the early copper age they had to melt ore for copper, then for iron etc.

    Jesus, the lengths theists go to to prove the existence of their God (like Brandon). Blah blah blah for over 20 minutes and it's just the Watchmaker's argument in a different form. If the existence of this being was so evident and believable, why do they always have to engage in tortured arguments or the twisting of words and logic to support their conclusion?

    This "you" who is walking along the beach. The person citing watchmaker wants you to lack knowledge of watches. And, presumably, any tech. But how much DO we know? Are we wearing clothing? How much about "made things" do we know? Or not know? The arguer fails to specify adequately. Or even grasp for themself. And, as precepts, these are critical to the outcome.
    Are we also presupposing ignorance of reasoning tools along with lack of other human advancement? The person using the argument is both applying some, yet ignorant of others.
    It's rather ironic. "Which, of the thinking tools I possess, but you, the person using Paley's argument may not, do _you expect me_ to exclude from Beachwalker's tool set?"
    Which, of the things I know but you don't, are you asking me to exclude from the awareness held by this character you're proposing?

  • @brucebaker810

    Everything is designed. We can tell that by determining its function and concluding, since it fills that function, that it was designed to do so.
    Objects whose function we can't determine? Probably still have one. And don't obviate the -theory- wild ass guess.

    • @18dot7
      @18dot7 3 роки тому

      *_Everything is designed_* And your evidence is? "Oh, look at the trees..."
      Can you give an example of something that's not designed? If you can't, how could you possibly come to that conclusion? How could you possibly assess what is what when your sample quantity for one option is zero? You CAN'T!
      Grow up! There has never been a monster under your bed nor are there any gods.
