Tortorella as number 1 seems unfair to say the least. Torts is a hothead and has a coaching style that not every player will enjoy, but he doesn't seem to be abusive like some of the coaches on this list.
Yeah, I think he actually defends his team and players quite well, hence why he gets quite annoyed and defensive to reporters. I’ve never really heard any complaints about him from players who played under him.
I don’t know where this guy got this about torts. Most of his players love playing for him. There have been numerous interviews with former players who give torts credit. I think the media has more to do with his bad rep than the players.
Keenan should have been #1. He'll go down in history as the only coach who won a Stanley Cup and was basically fired during the off-season. The explanation was that Rangers management failed to pay him a contract bonus, voiding his contract. The real reason was that the players turned on him, to the point where he was actually banned from practices by the players, who won the championship despite him.
Not only did he run into Mario, he faced prime Gretzky twice in SC final. the man coached to 4 cups winning one say what you want to about him but he put his players in prime position against the elite.
I agree with everyone but torts. He doesn’t mess around, he holds the players accountable no special treatments, just hard work and most amount of teamwork. He also stands up and defends his players when media are trying to make something out of nothing, even defends his players on the ice giving the refs hell when they should have made the call. Plus of course, he isn’t cliche with the media which is great cause they really do ask stupid questions.
From what I've heard he actually sits down and listens to the players too, he's like a dad that's an absolute dick to you all the time, but deep down really loves you, that's torts

I was at a high school party back in the mid 90’s that slowly started getting out of hand. Out of nowhere Scotty Bowman was at the front door breaking the party up. It was awesome and that’s all I’m gonna say.

Pretty sure Tortorella isn't as hated as it seems, even amongst players. One huge factor that contributes to his reputation is that he is very harsh on reporters who ask stupid questions and in return they retaliate when they write articles about him or when they are summoned on a panel and find a way to bash him live. Over time I've seen the other side of Torts that we rarely see in the medias: he is 100% invested in his team's success, very humane behind the scenes, spends time and money on charities... I would never put Tortorella and Keenan in the same sentence.

I actually like tortarella it was amazing when the blue jackets players ( artemi panarin bobrovsky and Matt duchene) signed somewhere else and was still able to get them to a playoff spot witch was the best coaching from a coach that coaches a shitty team I’ve seen from a coach
Tort's biggest fault is that he is very good at sensing the hidden agenda. SO often reporters try to pit one against the other, and he hates that. and he will call it. They also ask very stupid questions..
Some of the stories of Crawford I've heard are brutal. Even a former ref talked about Crow as being one of the only people he won't even give the time of day to. Said he was a monster.
Without the media, we as fans would not be able to watch the games. I agree that there are a lot of dumb questions asked to coaches and players alike. But acting like a baby about it is indeed childish. Especially for a man who so obviously focused on being a tough professional, yet he throws more tantrums than anyone out there. He's also threatened to punish players if they ever protested police brutality via sitting out for the anthem. And of course he made this statement while having a black player on his team. Looking it up, I see he finally reversed his stance on that, sort of. He seems to still think he should be making the final call on what a player will be allowed to do though. You know, I’ve actually always got a kick out of Tortorella. A lot of sports reporters ask dumb questions (yeah, as an Oilers fan, we have to deal with Mark Spector). So, I can totally get why Torts gets annoyed with them. I personally never really have heard of any issues with Torts and any of his players, and from what I gather, most enjoy(ed) him as a coach and respected him. As for the rest, yeah they are/were pretty terrible all around coaches.

Did you also know that Torts never told them they couldn't talk to the media or voice their concerns or opinions on what was going on. He never tried to stop their freedom of speech. Did you know that Seth Jones (the black player you're talking about) when goated by the media about the whole situation said "I'm just here to play hockey" and "I think it's fair" that Torts made that rule. He cares about the anthem, and regardless of your opinion he has skin in the game. People should think before the comment or "protest" things they don't understand. When you say "police brutality"? You mean when the media and a portion of the population ASSume the police were wrong and being racist because race is all they think about and play on 24/7 without knowing all the facts? There were lots of protests getting snuffed out in most recent Men's World Cup. Iran in particular made gestures on the field and statements in the press. Then there was also the US team in the women's World Cup who also had their own kneelings during the anthem. And of course, long before that is the very famous photo with Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists instead of covering their heart while on the podium to receive gold and bronze medals as the American anthem played. Sports and politics are inseparable. You want to speak about how its all about unity. Was the Miracle on Ice about the unity of America vs Russia? He's a dangerously overrated hockey coach. The Red Wings winning the cup in 08 had nothing to do with his coaching, but losing the finals the next year had everything to do with his coaching.

Punch Imlach. Many of his players in the late 60's on the Maple Leafs couldn't stand him. One being Frank Mahovlich, so he traded him to Detroit, and Toronto hasn't won the Cup since.
He won 4 Cups in the 60s including their last. He built the original Sabres that went to the cup final. Some guys didn't love Punch, but I would not pin the Leafs not winning a cup since on him. He traded Mahovlich to get Norm Ullman and Paul Henderson, both performed great in Toronto. The Leafs were in a rebuild and well what do you know before he could continue his work they fired him. Considering how he built the original Sabres would have been nice, also not getting Ballard as owner.
I would much rather have had Torts as a coach than any of the others. The only times I've seen players in his dog house is when they were not playing hard, especially if they weren't doing their defensive responsibilities. I'm sure that the other players on the team would have loved that about him
Mario Tremblay, Habs coach in 1996, left goalie Patrick Roy in for 9 goals against, finally took him out near the end of the game. Stared down Roy after Roy told the President that was his last game for Montreal. Worst coaching decision of all time. Roy went on to win the Cup with the Avs next season.
Canucks were in trouble in the late 90s having Mike Keenan there was a train wreck they had some good seasons with Crawford but I know he was abrasive with the players that bertuzzi and Moore incident just showed his true colours
I think it’s a bit unfair to put Tortorella as #1. Unlike the others on this list, he actually tries to change and modernize. The way he treated the players in Columbus was way different than in Tampa Bay.
Keenan broke up what could have been a Stanley Cup for the Blues. The Blues had at least 5 players representing their countries in one of the Canada Cup Series. That many players could have equated to a Stanley Cup but Keenan screwed it up.

Bowman was not psychopathic like some of these guys but he was a master manipulator who would also discover everything he could about your personal life and use it against you. A lot of players did not like him but it was a different era. Besides, he won everywhere he went.
As a Leafs fan the ultimate fall of Babcock was well deserved. What he did to Marner with the list was damn awful, but I love that it ultimately just backfired and made the players closer/united against Babs.

As a Red Wings fan, Im with ya Leafs fans. Babcock is the most overrated piece of shit of all time. Yay he coached a stacked team to an olympic gold medal. Yay he coached a stacked Red Wings team to a Stanley Cup, and then choked 2 games in 2009. Mike Babcock is the reason why Chris Osgood didn't win a 4th cup, 3rd as a starter, and isn't in the hall of fame. Babcock is 1 and 4 all time in Stanley Cup Finals clinching games. 1 and 4. 5 times he's played a game that could have clinched the Stanley Cup, 1 with Anahiem in 03, 2 with Detroit in both 08 and 09. Real legend there... and he's 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7's also. He played too conservatively, would try and score a few goals and then just sit back like it's a soccer game and then blow a lead, or just never be aggressive enough early in games when it was 0-0. He absofuckinglutely will be in the Hall of Fame unfortunately... you would assume, he's ironically beloved by some but yeah, Detroit and Toronto fans and probably Anaheim fans too despise him for choking constantly. Maybe since the HOF is in Toronto yall can petition to keep him out, and we'll drive 3 hours north to help? :)
I didn’t think too much of him during his playing days but I really like the guy now. Seems a lot more humble than I assumed he was during his playing days.
I remember writing letters to all my favorite hockey players when I was a kid. Hull was the only one to ever respond back. Not only did he send an autographed picture, he wrote a letter twice as long as the one I wrote him. Class Act!
I respect Brett Hull massively as a player; he changed the game. I don't respect Brett Hull so much for turning his back on Canada to play for USA, then getting away with a high stick tipped goal in the Canada Cup.
I think tortz is a little crazy but you rarely hear about things from his players. I think you probably could've replaced him with Roy or even Darryl sutter. Their former players always talk ish about them
To be fair, Mike Keenan should have been #2 on this list, if not #1. He was a violent man who also destroyed one franchise he did coach. Most of the others at least put their teams forward in the long run. Tortorella was definitely not a safe person to be around. When he yells, you could hear him from the other side of the city. And his players either get the message, get intimidated, or quit. As for Babcock, he did pull one antic that crossed the line and destroyed his integrity, but except for that, he did nothing unacceptable. He wasn't as violent as Keenan, but he was intimidating enough. Still, most of his team respected him. But one missing name from this list was Scotty Bowman. He deliberately got adversarial and intimidating with his players, so they hated him 364 days a year, the 365th being the one they pick up their Stanley Cup ring.
As a Hab, I never liked Michel Therrien👎👎👎 I know every coach gets frustrated with their players sometimes. But he seemed very personal with his displeasure. Then he had a SECOND stint with Montreal and was still the same🤢🤢🤢 That comment sbout Pittsburgh having "Goals" to be the worst defensive team in the NHL was pretty bad to say about the team you are working for. Montreal competed because of Theodore his first stint and then of Price his second, not because of his coaching. Had Crosby in Pittsburgh, not his coaching winning games, his good players.
Torts was a great coach if you hired him because your team wasn't disciplined. If your team was really good and winning then it was fine but forget if you're on a losing streak. Also, not all players will react well to his coaching style and can be a detriment to the team
Crawford is a piece of work. He actually smiled when Moore was injured. Definitely a sick individual. To this day I wonder why the Avs still honor him. I would add Patrick Roy to the list. Duchene had a lot of problems with Roy, you definitely could see it. Love your insight.
@@dannythomas417 Bednar did I agree. He was hired 2 weeks before Training Camp. A lot of the Avs players we're playing for their countries and were gone. I sat that season in an very empty Ball Arena. Avs definitely have come a long way, because of Bednar. Roy will never be given an opportunity to coach again in my opinion.
One of Roy's problems with Duchene was a game where Duchene scored his 100th goal or something while trailing by 4 or 5 goals and was celebrating like he won it in overtime

Head coaches rarely communicate with players. Imo this is done to keep a working relationship. It's hard to push buttons when things are going poorly and you're best friends with players. Assistant coaches on the other hand are the ones that players go to and then they relay to the coach. Hitch is known to be one of the smartest hockey minds in hockey. But everyone else on the list I agree with.

You said “most hated coaches of all time.” When in reality they are the most hated coaches in the past 40 years. You go back deeper Jack Adams would make all 6 of these guys combined look toothless and he had the ability to do a ton more than these guys bc the NHLPA didn’t exist … and when it started the first time he was a catalyst behind shutting it down and sent Lindsay to Chicago….. I'm not sure about Tortorella, but the others sure seem like A**holes. There are others, not necessarily coaches who should be on this type of list. Star's Ceo Jim Lites, for example, who called the media in expressly for the purpose of abusing Jamie Benn & Tyler Seguin, simply over one game. Completely unacceptable. And abusive behaviour is what you'll really get remembered for. I worshipped Brett Hull. He was the one that got me really hooked on Hockey. A really good, strong guy with great ethics. lol back in the day the rumor was Jacques Lemaire was hated by all of his players, they might've hated the guy but he was an excellent coach. I guess he was dictatorial behind the bench. There were quite a few coaches that had that label. Mike Keenan was another one, Pierre Pagé etc.
I still love Tortsie's verbal spars with Larry Brooks. Brooks is a fucking hack who doesn't seem to understand the difference between reporting and editorial, so the verbal smackdowns he was on the receiving end of were always so satisfying.
It seems like Babcock's real reputation was the most protected or the least exposed right up until his last NHL game. Fittingly he's no longer coaching and the hockey world is better without him.
There is no way Torts should be on this list. He never, ever, disrespected his players. Even those who had troubles with him say he cared deeply for them, taught them so much about life, and many became friends with him later on. My guess he’s on this list because opposing teams and opposing fans hate him, but not his players. Some do, for sure. But they tend to be hotheads, immature, and egotistical.
The only thing Keenan knows about goaltending is that he couldn’t score on one. He also used and abused Grant Fuhr until he was so worn down he ended up getting injured
These guys are usually cool with the superstars though. That's why they keep their jobs. The stories of what Mark Messier and others got away with with Keenan are hilarious. They didn't have to follow the rules so they didn't give a shit. I think that makes the superstars a bunch of dicks. If I was an MVP and I saw my coach abusing one of my friends and teammates I'd march into the owners office and say that coach goes and it's not up for discussion.

Scotty Bowman should have been on this list. Scotty Bowman was a very successful coach, but the reason why he was a successful coach was he treated his players that he coached like garbage. A few players that Scotty Bowman coached have said when the time comes when Scotty Bowman passes away, when they are attending his funeral they will relieve themselves by urinating on Scotty Bowman grave stone.
"Disrespected players" on Babcock in the thumbnail is certainly whitewashing his biggest issues. It wasn't just disrespect, it was abuse. Aside from that, I felt like this achievements were overrated. I feel most coaches achievements are frequently overrated and don't think there really are any 'great' coaches. There certainly are bad coaches who completely disrupt and restrain teams. But a coach is doing his best when he's letting his players do the work. Do you honestly think it would have been difficult to coach the 2008 Red Wings? Datsyuk and Zetterburg were 29 & 27. Lidstrom, possibly the best defenseman ever, was a 5-year Norris winner, having just won it the last two years (and made it three in a row that season.) Coaching that team was easy-street Regarding Tortorella, I most certainly do not "love to hate him." These guys don't seem to understand generations. They are stuck in their ways, with huge egos. What you can say to a 30+ year old player, you can't say to a 19 year old. I coached minor hockey for many years and how you talk to a 10 year old is very different how you talk to a 15 year old. The stuff Babcock did to Modano and Spezza is just so petty. Crawford was such a punk. I still love how Scotty Bowman and the Wings lived rent free in his head. And Babcock was an overrated fraud who road to a cup on Scotty's coattails.
These are all same era coaches…how about Punch Emlock (misspelled on purpose as he did to his superstar player The Big M Mahovlich). He and Ballard caused Mahovlich to have a nervous breakdown. The greatest Leaf of all time Dave Keon refused to have anything to do with Toronto Maple Leafs for about 35 years, again thanks to punch.

My thoughts as a (relatively) well-informed outsider who played the game at a decent level: Babcock and Keenan are plain psychopaths Hitchcock, at least here in STL, seemed demanding but respectful of players. I know a few people who have met him and never heard anything bad. He’s a hockey savant who might understand Xs and Os better than anyone else alive. But he does seem like he’s a perfectionist and stubborn and I can see how that can get old. Im also don’t think he’s the best at personal relationships, even if he’s far from the worst Everything I’ve seen from Tortorella makes him seem like a kind of coach I would love to play for, but as for perfectionism and stubbornness, see my comments on Hitch. I could also see how that would suck if you end up on his bad side Wilson just seems like he ran into two players who had long careers of being coach killers. But idk much else about him Crawford, I don’t know much about him
I like Totrtz, the man is a smart coach imho. He takes it serious, and demands a high lvl of play, he’s a tad bit mad…..but to me that’s passion! Cheers all!
Mike Keenan stripped the Cataincy off of Trevor Linden and gave it to Messier. Then traded Linden away. Also heard he gave Grant Ledyard time off to be with his wife who had cancer at the time then Keenan told the team that Ledyard quit the team.
It’s a shame that Iron Mike Keenan never had the opportunity to coach the Maple Laffs because he took the Flyers, Blackhawks and the Rangers to the playoffs and Keefe hasn’t been able to.

Yeah, I think he actually defends his team and players quite well, hence why he gets quite annoyed and defensive to reporters. I’ve never really heard any complaints about him from players who played under him.
I don’t know where this guy got this about torts. Most of his players love playing for him. There have been numerous interviews with former players who give torts credit. I think the media has more to do with his bad rep than the players.

Keenan should have been #1. He'll go down in history as the only coach who won a Stanley Cup and was basically fired during the off-season. The explanation was that Rangers management failed to pay him a contract bonus, voiding his contract. The real reason was that the players turned on him, to the point where he was actually banned from practices by the players, who won the championship despite him.

He also stands up and defends his players when media are trying to make something out of nothing, even defends his players on the ice giving the refs hell when they should have made the call. Plus of course, he isn’t cliche with the media which is great cause they really do ask stupid questions.

Pretty sure Tortorella isn't as hated as it seems, even amongst players. One huge factor that contributes to his reputation is that he is very harsh on reporters who ask stupid questions and in return they retaliate when they write articles about him or when they are summoned on a panel and find a way to bash him live. Over time I've seen the other side of Torts that we rarely see in the medias: he is 100% invested in his team's success, very humane behind the scenes, spends time and money on charities... I would never put Tortorella and Keenan in the same sentence.

You know, I’ve actually always got a kick out of Tortorella. A lot of sports reporters ask dumb questions (yeah, as an Oilers fan, we have to deal with Mark Spector). So, I can totally get why Torts gets annoyed with them. I personally never really have heard of any issues with Torts and any of his players, and from what I gather, most enjoy(ed) him as a coach and respected him.

You are either misinformed to what actually happened, or you're purposely leaving out several facts. I'm guessing a little bit of both because it looks like you probably blindly trust the media which is pretty ridiculous. Maybe I'm wrong but lets clear a few things up.
First off, it was a WORLD TOURNAMENT, not an NHL game like you misrepresented it as. These kids and coaches are representing their country, not the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 2016 the US was very much divided because of the lies the media was putting out there. World games, the World Cup, the Olympics etc are a time for coming together and having fun, a time for heeling and remembering the good. Not for playing follow the leader behind a washed up football player who's throwing temper tantrums because he's on his way out of the NFL and for media attention and endorsements from NIKE a company that still participates in child labor crimes. Did you know that Johns son Nick is a member in the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment? Did you know at the time of the tournament that John was coaching that Nick was over seas? Yeah if my son was in the military in harms way while coaching in a WORLD TOURNAMENT I would tell the players on my team that "if you sit on the bench during the anthem you will sit during the game". Did you also know that Torts never told them they couldn't talk to the media or voice their concerns or opinions on what was going on. He never tried to stop their freedom of speech. Did you know that Seth Jones (the black player you're talking about) when goated by the media about the whole situation said "I'm just here to play hockey" and "I think it's fair" that Torts made that rule. He cares about the anthem, and regardless of your opinion he has skin in the game. People should think before the comment or "protest" things they don't understand.

You mean when the media and a portion of the population ASSume the police were wrong and being racist because race is all they think about and play on 24/7 without knowing all the facts? That he said it in the context of an international tournament doesn't change anything. Americans have protested the anthem in the Olympics before. Its not new. There were lots of protests getting snuffed out in most recent Men's World Cup. Iran in particular made gestures on the field and statements in the press. Then there was also the US team in the women's World Cup who also had their own kneelings during the anthem. And of course, long before that is the very famous photo with Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists instead of covering their heart while on the podium to receive gold and bronze medals as the American anthem played. Sports and politics are inseparable. You want to speak about how its all about unity. Was the Miracle on Ice about the unity of America vs Russia? Or did that turn into a large symbol of America's superiority over its bitter political rival in Russia? This isn't Barney & Friends.
But you can also read Tortorella's quote on his backpedal a few years later and its clear that his 'threat' didn't apply to just games at international stages, that he "learned over the years" and his perspective on it has changed. So I appreciate your correction on the matter, but ultimately it doesn't change anything.

Punch Imlach. Many of his players in the late 60's on the Maple Leafs couldn't stand him. One being Frank Mahovlich, so he traded him to Detroit, and Toronto hasn't won the Cup since.
He won 4 Cups in the 60s including their last. He built the original Sabres that went to the cup final. Some guys didn't love Punch, but I would not pin the Leafs not winning a cup since on him. He traded Mahovlich to get Norm Ullman and Paul Henderson, both performed great in Toronto. The Leafs were in a rebuild and well what do you know before he could continue his work they fired him. Considering how he built the original Sabres would have been nice, also not getting Ballard as owner.

Mario Tremblay, Habs coach in 1996, left goalie Patrick Roy in for 9 goals against, finally took him out near the end of the game. Stared down Roy after Roy told the President that was his last game for Montreal. Worst coaching decision of all time. Roy went on to win the Cup with the Avs next season.
And coincidentally, Roy is also one of the biggest pieces of garbage in the game.

Keenan broke up what could have been a Stanley Cup for the Blues. The Blues had at least 5 players representing their countries in one of the Canada Cup Series. That many players could have equated to a Stanley Cup but Keenan screwed it up.

Bowman was not psychopathic like some of these guys but he was a master manipulator who would also discover everything he could about your personal life and use it against you. A lot of players did not like him but it was a different era. Besides, he won everywhere he went.

Mike Babcock is the reason why Chris Osgood didn't win a 4th cup, 3rd as a starter, and isn't in the hall of fame. Babcock is 1 and 4 all time in Stanley Cup Finals clinching games. 1 and 4. 5 times he's played a game that could have clinched the Stanley Cup, 1 with Anahiem in 03, 2 with Detroit in both 08 and 09. Real legend there... and he's 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7's also. He played too conservatively, would try and score a few goals and then just sit back like it's a soccer game and then blow a lead, or just never be aggressive enough early in games when it was 0-0. He absofuckinglutely will be in the Hall of Fame unfortunately... you would assume, he's ironically beloved by some but yeah, Detroit and Toronto fans and probably Anaheim fans too despise him for choking constantly. Maybe since the HOF is in Toronto yall can petition to keep him out, and we'll drive 3 hours north to help? :)

I think tortz is a little crazy but you rarely hear about things from his players. I think you probably could've replaced him with Roy or even Darryl sutter. Their former players always talk ish about them
To be fair, Mike Keenan should have been #2 on this list, if not #1. He was a violent man who also destroyed one franchise he did coach. Most of the others at least put their teams forward in the long run.
Tortorella was definitely not a safe person to be around. When he yells, you could hear him from the other side of the city. And his players either get the message, get intimidated, or quit.
As for Babcock, he did pull one antic that crossed the line and destroyed his integrity, but except for that, he did nothing unacceptable. He wasn't as violent as Keenan, but he was intimidating enough. Still, most of his team respected him.
But one missing name from this list was Scotty Bowman. He deliberately got adversarial and intimidating with his players, so they hated him 364 days a year, the 365th being the one they pick up their Stanley Cup ring.

That comment sbout Pittsburgh having "Goals" to be the worst defensive team in the NHL was pretty bad to say about the team you are working for.
Montreal competed because of Theodore his first stint and then of Price his second, not because of his coaching. Had Crosby in Pittsburgh, not his coaching winning games, his good players.
Therrien was awful. Never understood why Montreal hired him. Dude was a jerk.

Torts was a great coach if you hired him because your team wasn't disciplined. If your team was really good and winning then it was fine but forget if you're on a losing streak. Also, not all players will react well to his coaching style and can be a detriment to the team

In Milbury's case it was his all-world levels of incompetence. He hung around only because he was an insider.

To this day I wonder why the Avs still honor him. I would add Patrick Roy to the list. Duchene had a lot of problems with Roy, you definitely could see it. Love your insight.

@@dannythomas417 Bednar did I agree. He was hired 2 weeks before Training Camp. A lot of the Avs players we're playing for their countries and were gone. I sat that season in an very empty Ball Arena. Avs definitely have come a long way, because of Bednar. Roy will never be given an opportunity to coach again in my opinion.
One of Roy's problems with Duchene was a game where Duchene scored his 100th goal or something while trailing by 4 or 5 goals and was celebrating like he won it in overtime

Head coaches rarely communicate with players. Imo this is done to keep a working relationship. It's hard to push buttons when things are going poorly and you're best friends with players. Assistant coaches on the other hand are the ones that players go to and then they relay to the coach.
Hitch is known to be one of the smartest hockey minds in hockey. But everyone else on the list I agree with.

I'm not sure about Tortorella, but the others sure seem like A**holes. There are others, not necessarily coaches who should be on this type of list. Star's Ceo Jim Lites, for example, who called the media in expressly for the purpose of abusing Jamie Benn & Tyler Seguin, simply over one game. Completely unacceptable. And abusive behaviour is what you'll really get remembered for.
I worshipped Brett Hull. He was the one that got me really hooked on Hockey. A really good, strong guy with great ethics. Thank Christ guys like him exist to cancel out the wankers.

I still love Tortsie's verbal spars with Larry Brooks. Brooks is a fucking hack who doesn't seem to understand the difference between reporting and editorial, so the verbal smackdowns he was on the receiving end of were always so satisfying.

It seems like Babcock's real reputation was the most protected or the least exposed right up until his last NHL game. Fittingly he's no longer coaching and the hockey world is better without him.

There is no way Torts should be on this list. He never, ever, disrespected his players. Even those who had troubles with him say he cared deeply for them, taught them so much about life, and many became friends with him later on. My guess he’s on this list because opposing teams and opposing fans hate him, but not his players. Some do, for sure. But they tend to be hotheads, immature, and egotistical.

These guys are usually cool with the superstars though. That's why they keep their jobs. The stories of what Mark Messier and others got away with with Keenan are hilarious. They didn't have to follow the rules so they didn't give a shit. I think that makes the superstars a bunch of dicks. If I was an MVP and I saw my coach abusing one of my friends and teammates I'd march into the owners office and say that coach goes and it's not up for discussion.

Scotty Bowman should have been on this list. Scotty Bowman was a very successful coach, but the reason why he was a successful coach was he treated his players that he coached like garbage. A few players that Scotty Bowman coached have said when the time comes when Scotty Bowman passes away, when they are attending his funeral they will relieve themselves by urinating on Scotty Bowman grave stone.

That's no revelation, almost all hockey coaches have had to do that a time or two.
"Disrespected players" on Babcock in the thumbnail is certainly whitewashing his biggest issues. It wasn't just disrespect, it was abuse. Aside from that, I felt like this achievements were overrated. I feel most coaches achievements are frequently overrated and don't think there really are any 'great' coaches. There certainly are bad coaches who completely disrupt and restrain teams. But a coach is doing his best when he's letting his players do the work. Do you honestly think it would have been difficult to coach the 2008 Red Wings? Datsyuk and Zetterburg were 29 & 27. Lidstrom, possibly the best defenseman ever, was a 5-year Norris winner, having just won it the last two years (and made it three in a row that season.) Coaching that team was easy-street
Regarding Tortorella, I most certainly do not "love to hate him." He's an awful person who holds racist ideals, as seen with his ignorant stances on anthem protests. I wish he was out of the league entirely as he makes it very uninviting for non-white people.

These guys don't seem to understand generations. They are stuck in their ways, with huge egos. What you can say to a 30+ year old player, you can't say to a 19 year old. I coached minor hockey for many years and how you talk to a 10 year old is very different how you talk to a 15 year old. The stuff Babcock did to Modano and Spezza is just so petty. These are all same era coaches…how about Punch Emlock (misspelled on purpose as he did to his superstar player The Big M Mahovlich). He and Ballard caused Mahovlich to have a nervous breakdown. The greatest Leaf of all time Dave Keon refused to have anything to do with Toronto Maple Leafs for about 35 years, again thanks to punch.

My thoughts as a (relatively) well-informed outsider who played the game at a decent level:
Babcock and Keenan are plain psychopaths
Hitchcock, at least here in STL, seemed demanding but respectful of players. I know a few people who have met him and never heard anything bad. He’s a hockey savant who might understand Xs and Os better than anyone else alive. But he does seem like he’s a perfectionist and stubborn and I can see how that can get old. Im also don’t think he’s the best at personal relationships, even if he’s far from the worst
Everything I’ve seen from Tortorella makes him seem like a kind of coach I would love to play for, but as for perfectionism and stubbornness, see my comments on Hitch. I could also see how that would suck if you end up on his bad side
Wilson just seems like he ran into two players who had long careers of being coach killers. But idk much else about him

Mike Keenan stripped the Cataincy off of Trevor Linden and gave it to Messier. Then traded Linden away.
Also heard he gave Grant Ledyard time off to be with his wife who had cancer at the time then Keenan told the team that Ledyard quit the team.
It’s a shame that Iron Mike Keenan never had the opportunity to coach the Maple Laffs because he took the Flyers, Blackhawks and the Rangers to the playoffs and Keefe hasn’t been able to.
