I don't think the Internet was ever supposed to be for young children. Letting your child go online unsupervised is the equivalent of letting your child wander the streets in a random city alone unsupervised.

That's exactly right. When I was a young tech employee in the early 90s, who at that point had only spent half my life at with ANY kind of access to computers, I was surprised and later appalled at how many of my friends started letting their young kids anywhere near a modem, blackberry, etc. Now the tablets and social junk are really messing with their heads, they'll never know what real life was like. No frame of reference as to what normal is.
Parents should assume some responsibility in allowing their children to have the degree of access to all social media outlets, violent gun centered video games, tik tok, Twitter phone apps, tablets, smart phones, lap tops, desk top computers and any other electronic device(s). Use the Parental Control options on all devices for all children under the age of 18. There is no requirement that children before that age must have an electronic device ,cell phone, or smart device. Restricting the use of this type of equipment starts at the Parental level then the social media industry.

One question I haven't heard any of the Senators ask. Why would you allow child porn of any kind to be uploaded in the first place. There should be no way to look at or load child porn period. It should be red flagged from existing.

Sometimes there are porn of women that may in fact be 18 to 20 that happens to look like they are 14, 15, or 16 years old. The process to even verify that can take weeks or months to investigate and prove. This is why it is a lot harder to prove. Perhaps, for platforms that allows people of all age that NO PORN of any kind should be on such a site, period. So if it flagged and such a warning would be placed, it should just be removed because it is porn regardless of whether or not the person is underage or of age. So the content should not even be on such a platform. A platform that would have any porn should be a platform that requires age verification requiring photo ID verification along with web cam verification that you are the person on the ID card like exam proctors do.
And also why the creators of the internet dont take responsibility for kids who find porn 😂
Please, I implore those of you in the US. Please evolve your language from using the term “child porn”. This is not child porn. It’s is child abuse imagery. Those of us in the UK and wider Europe have moved on from this hideous language. Catch up.

There is a lot of forms of imagery of child abuse besides the naked body of children. Then again, there has always and will be different word choices used in different regions of the world of english speaking nations. In UK, they use terms like windscreen, boot, and bonnet for windshield, trunk, and hood (in US and some other countries). We are particular talking about child pornography not all things child abuse which probably should also not be displayed on platforms for children but there is very explicit legal definition and legal issues pertaining specific to child porn that is more severe in ways than other forms of child abuse imagery.

Now porn is being foisted upon school age chlidren in a way that hooks them, at school, with friends, and at home. Parents are not ever present helicoptering to monitor their cell phone use. Unless you are with your teen 100% of time then they will be exposed to social media. Although not allowed in our home all their friends have it and they see it at school. I have sat down and talked with my kids about why important to avoid it. My kids told me they 1st saw nudity from friends social media in 6th grade. No picture is good enough because all their friends use "filters to make them look better". Parents are trying but it is an uphill battle daily.

As I see this issue of children and the many abuses they can face. It is this - No child under 18 years of age may have or use an iPhone or smartphone. The ONLY internet access to be through the school system under monitored server conditions. A minor cannot drink. Cannot watch R-rated or 'adult only' material. To be honest this was not nearly as productive of a hearing as it should have been for one.
For two, I despise Zuckerberg as much as the next guy, but let's be realistic about what we're talking about here. This is a social media platform, with millions upon millions of users, all of which have the capability to upload content, create content, share content, download content. One person cannot account for every single thing that happens on a platform; they can do their best to control a lot of what's going on, sure, but ultimately the limiters to what kids are consuming on a social media platform should ALWAYS be the parents of those kids, first and foremost. Zuckerberg has more or less become a scapegoat in this pursuit of a cleaner social media experience, when in reality we as parents should be more diligent in what content our children are consuming, and steering them away from harmful material and having proper conversations with them about what exists online. It would almost be a more productive use of time to talk about courses geared towards internet safety for kids.

Simple way of solving the problem. Do not buy your preteens and even young teens a phone. They don’t need one until 16 when they start driving. If they play games on tablet, have them play them in room with you.
It always seems easy to blame corporations. As if all the companies have the responsibility for what people are doing with their times. Kids die on the road all the time, do these politicians get grilled for higher safety on the roads? Kids die from school shootings, do these politicians try to change gun laws or implement a higher level of mental health checks in school?

Parents should be monitoring what their children have access to, BUT social media companies also need to be vigilant in ensuring that the material discussed in this hearing stays OFF of their platforms. They have no problem finding and removing information about a certain virus that they don’t like, so why is this so difficult?

As a human being and not just a parent we are all responsible for not perpetuating this dosgustimg cycle. If there was even a hint of possibility that material would contain anything relating to children, it should have been removed, it should never be an "option to view", that's not on a parent, that's on the devlopers of media outlets. What reason in the world would there be to allow that to be viewed by anyone? There is none.

Thats very interesting observation that rights are for adults and not children. I definitely think there needs to be more conversation about the differences between the rights and responsibilities of children and educating adults and companies on the diffences and the responsibilities of adults and companies toward children.

it's definitely not cool and I've been on the internet long before all the advanced content filters so I've stumbled upon some pretty horrific stuff but I also think that it is slightly ignorant to never see any of that stuff in your life considering these tragic events are common around the world. For example, I always wanted a motorcycle even though my parents would tell me constantly how dangerous it was. It wasn't until I accidently saw a couple videos of uncensored motorcycle accidents and what happened to the people that I realized how dangerous and deadly they can be and it made me take them much more seriously. I fully understood what was at risk and what the possibilities could be. That's why I'd probably show my kids some MILD videos of drunk driving accidents instead of just telling them not to drink and drive... Or MILD videos of people overdosing instead of just telling them not to do drugs. It's all fun and games and "oh that could never happen to me" until you actually see it happen. I feel like instead of trying to hammer it in over and over that they shouldn't do something, it would be better to just sit them down and say "look at what happened here" and let them draw their own conclusions. At least that's what worked for me so to each their own I suppose.

At what point is it the parents responsibility? I have 3 kids 18-22, and I don’t know what these companies can do to help. They’re not the police, but we’re asking them to enforce laws? They do a lot and I’m sure they can do more but it’s a parents responsibility to know your child. Just like teaching your child how to drive, you don’t just toss them the keys and say have at it and if you realize in the process that your child can’t drive or is reckless, you help them learn and teach them not to be.
Letting your child on the internet is just like letting them go out with their friends on a Friday night except the neighborhood is a lot bigger but all the same rules apply, stranger danger, no means no, etc. Letting your child on the internet is no different than letting them walk out the front door alone and should be treated like that, you should have curfews, you should ask who they’re online with and where they’re going and where they’ve been. Check their internet history, ask to meet their online friends, there’s 1000’s of tools for phones and computers. For every threat out there, there is a tool out there to fight it. I can guarantee almost all these parents at this hearing didn’t know what their child was doing online. Yes the companies need to do more but at the end of the day parents have to be more involved with their children’s lives.

Why should fb and insta and other social media be responsible of who uses those apps. Yes, these companies should have screens and flags that will takedown harmful things. But it is 100% the responsibility of the parent to keep tabs on everything their kid is doing online.

These parents need to stop blaming other people when the parents had no issue letting Social Media apps raise their kids until something bad happened, then they wanted to play the blame game, it's disgusting.. The internet is a city, would they let their kids roam a city unattended? It's more dangerous even because you can roam this city from the "safety" of your own home, it gives a false sense of safety.. Kids shouldn't be on the internet, most websites require you to be older than 13 to use but I feel it should be 18.. I don't get why they're relying on Social Media to raise kids, why don't parents take responsibility and hold themselves accountable? They're the ones who bought the phones and computers so how it's Mark Zuckerbergs responsibility that something happened? I feel this is more of a witch hunt, and I despise ALL of these apps.. Not when the schools require the kids to use the devices and integrate them into their lives. The big tech companies, their partnership and domination over schools, make it nearly impossible for parents to have much say over what their kids are electronically exposed to. That's why the tech parents put their kids in elite low-tech schools that most parents can't afford.
And, it's not what the kids are doing online that's the problem. It's what the owners of the lines are doing to the kids on purpose. The owners of the platforms are using it for predatory purposes and planning in secret on how to make it socially acceptable to spread it to younger kids.

If they have identified the content that has CP or abuse to even display that message in the 1st place, then shouldn't they have notified the authoritiesof the person diatributing it and remove it from their site? If not and allowing people to view it they become part of the CP distribution chain which would be clearly illegal and should face charges. Because at the point someone clicks to see it anyway and you show them, you are then re-distributing it. Which surely ia just as illegal as the original poster of the content.
