An Enlightening Explanation of Diaphragm & Gasket Fitting positioning FOR GREATER KNOWLEDGE
A chainsaw can stall or die when throttled due to various issues. Here are the common reasons why this might occur:
Air-Fuel Mixture: An incorrect air-fuel mixture can lead to stalling. If the mixture is too lean (more air, less fuel) or too rich (more fuel, less air), it can affect engine operation.
Clogged Air Filter: A dirty or clogged air filter restricts the airflow to the engine, resulting in inadequate combustion and stalling.

I found a mounting strut loose on a Briggs & Stratton single cylinder. Tightened the stud, and fixed the air leak. Thanks for the tutorial. Well worth the watch.

Dear Sir,I don't know how much thanks to say in here to you. But after I watched this video that I understand completely the concept of the carburetor in a small engine. Also I had a Echo back pack blower that was given me a hard time to start. The problem was found in the metering diaphragm. Replaced new diaphragm and I'm back to the business. Hands down the best explanation on the internet ever. Believe me I've been through lots trying to get my equipment working properly. You're mention of the tightness of the long bolt and screws holding everything together preventing air leaks is gold . I overlooked that focusing on the obvious. I was inspired to fix a poorly pole chainsaw. Now works sweetly.
I was cleaning my father's mower carb when a child but never had a clue what was happening... Now 50 years later it is clearer.
Then fixed an electric mower, electric scarifier and finally my troublesome old Honda powered 4 stroke mower. Using some of your principles, and others ideas.
Then cut the grass!
Other folks comments cause no little levity and so glad you were polite even with some provocation.

Absolutely excellent tutorial. Very easy to understand, now all I've got to do is work out why my saw idles, accelerates a bit, bogs down then picks up to full power. I'm thinking I've got a bit of dirt somewhere. Thankyou for explaining so comprehensively but in layman's terms.
I want to thank you very much for creating these videos. I am a retiree (a toolmaker in fact) who hasn’t had a great deal of experience with small engines. And, being a retiree I don’t have the financial means to take classes on the subject. I have however found that I can acquirer mowers, weed eaters, etc. for little or no money at all. Great joy! Having the material to then work with all that is lacking is the knowledge which is where you have greatly blessed us. For this we are in your debt. Thank you again. T
Understanding the concepts and principles of operation is probably ten times better for me than all of the "how-to" videos I've come across so far. I've already gone through the carburetor five times, and even replaced the two diaphragms, after this video, I went through it once more, for all of the little things I neglected to check, and decided the problem wasn't there. The Stihl MS 310 isn't quite the same as this, but the principles are the same. I made it my plan, to go through this list, one item at a time, and the most likely culprits first. The next most likely seemed to be the fuel line, and although it looked fine, a little bit of air pressure revealed it to be broken. Problem solved! In a matter of about one hour, a problem I've been chasing for two weeks, now (about six years, of you count the time it's been sitting because of this problem). This will help in my neighborhood, after the destruction wrought on us, here in Florida, by Hurricane Matthew. Thanks for this brilliant and comprehensive video.
Robert Mertens I have a Stihl MS 210c chainsaw and found it's problem to be a cracked "dry-rotted" fuel line with a tiny hole in it. I suspected that was the problem for a good while but couldn't confirm it til I just happened to have the air filter cover off and noticed fuel spraying out of the fuel line.
Whatever the case may be, my friend...stay inquisitive and always do your research. UA-cam is a TREMENDOUS tool for learning. Use UA-cam for all it's worth!!
Lawnmower shops don't want to deal w/these lil 2 stroke engines. They all use Zaymmer Carb's almost. I just learned tonight about the "SPARK ARRESTOR" that completely cloggs up & cause the engine to idel but not run i.e. no where for the burned fuel to get out cause bog down. I've never seen a lawnmower man speak of that. But I would bet a dollar thats whats wrong w/my Ryobi I bought a new Carb for my Pouland after trying 2 battery powered trimmers one only had one line 20v Lithium so I tried a 40v two line trimmer it was DOA batteries wouldn't charge. So I knew there be someone like this gentleman that covers this on a school level instruction very good resource for sure.
Watchman4u If you're having problems with your spark arrestor clogging up, you may be putting too much oil in the gas. If the tool in question is a Stihl chainsaw, then it probably wants 50:1. Too much oil can cause other problems with carbon buildup. My old Ryobi trimmer called for 32:1 and it stopped running because the ring got stuck in its groove and it lost compression. The truth is that you never need any more than 50:1 but the carburetor will have to be adjusted to use that ratio properly. Adding more oil to the gas will lean out the air/fuel mixture while decreasing the oil will richen the mixture. If your carb requires a special tool to adjust the screws, just cut a groove in them with a hacksaw. Be careful to not cut too deep. You can find detailed instructions on how to tune a 2 cycle carb on the internet too. I hope this helps.

Low is adjusted for quick trigger response, and the high is adjusted for high speed power. I always adjusted the high to rev at its highest speed, and then opened it slighty more, to provide extra lubrication into the engine, but not so much to lose power. This prolonged the life of the engine. ( I fell timber, in my younger days, and always re-kitted my own equipment carborators.)

When I saw that this video was going to be over an hour, I almost left the site. However, the author hooked me with his clear commentary, his plain speaking style and his knowledge of the subject. I managed to watch the whole 1 hour video and that is great. But, this video is really long and I think that it could be edited down to about 20 minutes. There is a lot of information but a lot of the information is long winded and the target audience should already know where the author is going with his explanations. I didn't like having to watch for an hour to see a lot of information that I already knew. BUT! I did learn a lot about 2 stroke carbs that is very valuable to me. I feel that tomorrow I could hang out my shingle and do small engine repair thanks to this video. I feel like I just received a master's degree in small engine repair. Thanks so much!!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a mechanic by trade, and a very talented one if I must say so. I rebuild automatic transmissions for a living, but for the life of me I've struggled with keeping any of my 2 stroke stuff running, and people give me weedeaters, tillers, leaf blowers etc... Cause they think since I'm a mechanic I can fix it, and put it to use, but I've struggled with 2 stroke for whatever reason, so I sit on dozens of 2 stroke freebies people have given me, but can't seem to keep any of them running for more than say 20 minutes, but your video was amazing. 90% of the stuff I have has a bog down issue under full throttle. your video has helped me to fully grasp, and understand how these motors work, and have helped me to understand what I've been missing. Now time to raid the tool shed, and my plethora of bog down issues, and get some stuff fixed! thank you soo much for you're clarity sir. it is more than appreciated!

I've been working on engine's most of my life since age 16,mostly car,sometimes b&s mower engine, I've good grounding in4stroke mainly by experience, reading ive got a number of 2stoke engine's whilst understanding principles of them, didn't have a clue on carb, youve now lifted the mist on iner working, your tutorials of tbat carb was fantastic really enjoyed watching learnt so much! By trade I'm electronics engineer ,l never dump anything, if it's broke l can fix it providing get spares, am very hands on not much l can't do,building/roof repair plumbing/heating systems, and I'm trained chef! Lot's of experience now aged 72 thanks great tutorial! Stuart

in '67 I exposed the department I managed with hydraulic valve cutouts (from otherwise failed units) so that the younger hands could easily see/understand the workings of various internal components of many parts we used, much like the drawings you show here. this does a wonderful job of explanation. regards.

Great video The only thing I would add to the discussion is primer bulbs can crack and cause an air leak and bogging. Eventually difficult cold starting as well from a bad primer bulb

I’ve had issues with air lock on my zero turn, due to fuel cap not venting. Actually took the cap off one side and swapped with the other side, to diagnose it. Took the cap apart and the check valve inside was fine. Cleaned the cap, and didn’t have another issue.

Excellent video, look forward to watching many more in your series. Been dealing with a bogging and dying scenario that was progressively getting worse over time. Vacuum checked the fuel line. No leak, purchased new fuel line anyhow, and filter. Removed carb to facilitate fuel line replacement.
Detected some softness of fuel line when replacing but not extreme. Filter was not blocked as I could suck through it easily. Why I didn't do it with my vacuum pump , I still haven't determined. Anyhow I thought I would touch on soft fuel lines, as sometimes I have found them so soft and gummy that squeezing them together has caused the rubber to permanately bond together. Replaced fuel line and filter.
Saw runs fine now, but not so sure it was fuel line. Possibly was leaking manifold gasket due to loose carb bolts, as it was in shop once for repairs and I had been blaming the saw for running crappy for several years since. , Because it was a Stihl I just assumed that was the reason. Now to figure out why my newish Stihl leaf blower bogs down and loses power.
I would add to your check list the spark arrester, as that was the problem found to be at fault with my brand new line trimmer with less than 5 tanks of fuel run thru it. Maybe my 2 stroke problems will stop when will I learn to quit buying Stihls, and get quality equipment.

I was watching the because of the likely similarities to the 2 stroke vespa I just got, and learned one of the problems that my moped was previously having. I will be much more diagnose and fix any two stroke bog down (and some other related issues) without having very little idea what I'm doing for hours. I've gained a new respect for carburetors because of all the thing that can be fixed with them.
in the past I've grown to distrust anything that has a carburetor, thinking they are dirty and annoying to deal with, and this video makes them considerably less annoying.

thanks so much, I recently rebuilt my poulan saw carb and am having trouble. It dies when releasing the gas and takes constant on/off throttle engagement to keep it going, after a minute or two it goes full throttle without any bogging down. I'm adjusting the l and h screw and hope that'll solve my problems. Thanks again!
Bill Dauterive, brilliant, I hope you can sort it very soon. It sounds like it's lean of fuel and you are right to try the L and H screws first. Good luck 👍
No just clean your spark arrester. Remove the screen from your muffler cinch it in a vise. Get a propane torch and heat the spark arrester screen till its red hot and wire brush the burnt carbon off. And reinstall. It should start up and run well.

I had the fuel tank cap issue. I spent $50 on a larger tank for my little scooter and couldn't ride it for a week because I didn't think the new tank could be the issue. If I had watched this video first I would have learned a lot. Thanks!
One more thing you might want to consider is what I first ran across yesterday. A clogged air filter. Never have seen that before yesterday but when I figured it out, the machine ran beautifully.

Thanks TheRepairSpecialist. I have a stihl FS220 trimmer and MS170 chainsaw which I've learned to use but never managed to sort out the problems when the machines cannot start or get bogged down. This video provides a step by step overview of what to look for if the engine bogs down and I am going to make use of the knowledge -- thanks very much. Would you also have a video if the engine doesn't want to start? Imagine and this is merely a "crash course" haha....thumbs UP!!!

TheRepairSpecialist I have bog down on a echo chain saw, I bought a new carb.and still have bog down, have changed fuel lines, thumb bulb, cleaned spark arrest screen, guess my question is would a new carb need the hi -low jets adjusted or not. the carb I replaced was doing same as the new carb is doing
Steve Griffith I have the same issue. My next step will be to check the exhaust which if plugged will prevent combustion gas from escaping properly chocking the engine.
