  • An animated infographic depicting China’s territorial disputes. Is China trying to expand its territory?
    Click here to subscribe to The Economist on UA-cam: econ.trib.al/rW...
    ONE reason China’s spectacular rise sometimes alarms its neighbours is that it is not a status quo power. From its inland, western borders to its eastern and southern seaboard, it claims territory it does not control.
    In the west, China’s border dispute with India is more than a minor cartographic tiff. China claims an area of India that is three times the size of Switzerland, the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
    Further west, China occupies Indian claimed territory next to Ladakh in Kashmir, an area called the Aksai Chin. China humiliated India in a brief, bloody war over the dispute in 1962. Since 1988, the two countries have put the dispute on the backburner and got on with developing commercial ties, despite occasional flare-ups.
    More immediately dangerous is the stand-off between China and Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea, known as the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in Chinese.
    Japan says they have always been its territory and admits no dispute, claiming also that China only started expressing an interest when it began to seem the area might be rich in oil and gas.
    A new and much more dangerous phase of the dispute began in 2012 after Japan’s government nationalised three of the islands by buying them from their private owner.
    China accused Japan of breaking an understanding not to change the islands’ status. Ever since, it has been challenging not just Japan’s claim to sovereignty over the islands, but its claim to control them, sending Chinese ships and planes to patrol them.
    Raising the stakes is Japan’s alliance with America, which says that though it takes no position on who owns the islands, they are covered by its defence treaty with Japan, since it administers them.
    Especially provocative to America and Japan was China’s unilateral announcement in November 2013 of an Air-defence Identification Zone, covering the islands.
    The worry is less that big powers will deliberately go to war over these desolate little rocks, but that an accidental collision at sea or in the air might escalate unforeseeably.
    Similar fears cloud disputes in the South China Sea, where the maritime claims in South-East Asia are even more complex, and, again, competition is made more intense by speculation about vast potential wealth in hydrocarbon resources.
    Vietnam was incensed in May 2014 when China moved a massive oil-rig to drill for two months in what it claimed as its waters.
    This was near the Paracel Islands, controlled by China since it evicted the former South Vietnamese from them in 1974.
    To the south, China and Vietnam also claim the Spratly archipelago, as does Taiwan, whose claim in the sea mirrors China’s. But the Philippines also has a substantial claim. Malaysia and even tiny Brunei also have an interest.
    But it is with Vietnam and the Philippines that China’s disputes are most active. The Philippines accuses China of salami-slicing tactics, stealthily expanding its presence in disputed waters. In 1995 it evicted the Philippines from Mischief Reef, and in 2012 from Scarborough Shoal.
    This year it has tried to stop the Philippines from resupplying a small garrison it maintains on the Second Thomas Shoal, and appears to be building an airstrip on the Johnson South Reef.
    The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea-UNCLOS-is one forum for tackling these disputes. But UNCLOS cannot rule over territorial disputes, just over the waters habitable islands are entitled to.
    And China and Taiwan point to a map published in the 1940s, showing a big U-shaped nine-dashed line around the edge of the sea. That, they say, is historically all China’s. This has no basis in international law, and the Philippines, to China’s fury, is challenging it at an UNCLOS tribunal.
    In fact China often fails to clarify whether its claims are based on the nine-dashed line, or on claims to islands, rocks and shoals.
    That lack of clarity alarms not just its neighbours and rival claimants, but the United States, which says it has its own national interest in the freedom of navigation in a sea through which a huge chunk of global trade passes
    Also alarming is that if these arguments over tiny specks in the sea become so unmanageable, what hope is there for resolving the really big issues? And the biggest of all is the status of Taiwan, still seen by China as part of its territory, but in practice independent since 1949.
    For now, Taiwan and China have a thriving commercial relationship. But polls suggest that few in Taiwan hanker after unification with the mainland. And China’s rulers still insist that one day they will have to accept just that.

      ***** you can wait and see, if Asian countries know the US permanently leaves the arena, leaving China the only super power in the area, then it's not about trust, not about being democratic internally or not. You will see. It's human instinct

    • @fredsaga3708
      @fredsaga3708 7 років тому +5

      ***** I don't think China wants to be anyone's enemy. Once it replaces the US in Asian pacific, it would grant you pardon. Look at these ten ASEAN countries, Thai, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia are generally very close to China; Indonesia is OK, Brunei is too small to be relevant; Singapore is flipping based on its own national interest; Philippines is already flipped towards China's side, leaving only Vietnam being somewhat hostile, but still it is flipping. You see the trend? It's not about how one country's political system is organized, it's all about geo-political check and balance. Why you believe in so deep about democracy? Because your country is half colonized by the US, so from day one when you were born, you were taught to believe so without further critical thinking. I agree that, compared with formal European empires like British empire, the USA is much more friendly. Why is that? is it because of democracy? No, it is because the USA is a Puritan country, or, it's all about culture. I agree that China should move toward democracy in the long run, however, in terms of geo-political check and balance, being democratic or not is not relevant. It's just your dream after decades of systematic brainwash.

    If China did not violate international law by claiming territory it would probably have much better relations with its neighbours. Interesting how China picks on weaker countries yet does not claim territory along its border with Russia as much of China's land had been taken by the Russians in the 1800's.

    • @sphereiceberg6534

      China's claim of the territories predates the establishment of the international law, i.e. United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which came effective on 16 November 1994. Mommy Jul that’s what the evil one is always after, the resources of others, will steal it for it’s own gain. all wars are started when people & nations dont like to observe God’s rules & laws, and the outcome of victory in wars doesnt always mean it’s the good that prevailed. Evil can also win oftentimes, so we mortals will know the difference between the just & good versus unjust & bad. That’s what the God of the universe is telling us, it is our cursed to live in this world, and those who embrace it will be destroyed together with it.

    Dispute goes both ways. To make the statement that china's claims worry its neighbours, wouldn't be true the other way around as well - It's also true that China worries about some of its neighbours' territorial claims. Unless you already presume that china doesn't have any legitimacy over any of these disputes?

    • @minjunyang6376
      @minjunyang6376 10 років тому

      theadam22 Reasoning that china does not have a right to claim changes nothing about my original statement. If anything it just confirms there was unsaid implication that you already presume china do not have a right to claim. And indeed you did just that in your reply.

    • @minjunyang6376
      @minjunyang6376 10 років тому +2

      theadam22 My point was that without further evidence been presented, the natural position when we encounter a dispute is to be neutral, without making rash judgement until we hear both side of argument. Indeed most news report try to present balanced view points, try to be inpartial, meaning we take sides, and when you present only one side argument, it is propaganda. So in a neutral position, you need to presume that every sides have reasons to back their claims, because if you imply china doesn't have a reason to claim without presenting your evidence, then you are wasting your time, china simply needs to say been a small nation do not give your any more rights to bully your big neighbour, been a small nation should not give you any more empathy if you claim land against a big nation. Maybe you still don't get my point. But whether china have a right to claim is another topic, and my original post is about the pretence of trying to be inpartial. You just came out said you think china shouldn't have a claim, whereas my original post is that don't imply china shouldn't claim without presenting evidence and still trying to pass as a piece of balanced report when it is not. I don't know if you will understand this, or whether you ever bother to at least search Wikipedia on the topic of south china sea dispute. But if you ever did, I'm happy to tell you as why I think china should claim, as in they may not have a strong claim, but none of the rival claimants have anything substantially stronger. Don't jump into the biggest and most confusing territorial dispute in the world at this moment, and think you got easy answer.

      My friend it is not 118 parallel its 116. Plus Philippines was never under Chinese rule nor we were part of the Ming Dynasty. The indigenoues people who are living there are not chinese, they speak filipino. The thing is we live in a modern era where we have international laws such as UNCLOS and ITLOS to follow. China also signed to this, why didn't China objected at that time?...Its because they knew it was part of the philippines, china even asked permission form the philippine president in 2007 to 2008 if they can do exploration including philippine shores. When they found out that a massive oil deposits are there that can supply Chinas needs for more than a century they started developing thie 9 dash line and mind you my friend these current map is not taught by you schools when u are still young.

      louie casper The degree of longitude is used by USA to show that wwhile they did have a defence treaty with Philippine, they had no obligation to protect what is disputed lands, that includes scarborough shoal and spratlys. So take your argument to the USA.
      UNCLOS is a law of convention about maritime delimitation, it does not deal with sovereignty dispute. And according to the Convention, in case of disputes over territory, maritime delineation and historic title or rights, a signatory to the Convention may refuse to accept the jurisdiction of any international justice or arbitration as long as it makes a declaration. So far, 34 countries have made such declarations based on this provision. China made its declaration back in 2006.
      Philippine is using the compromisory clause of the UNCLOS, which says the case could continue without china ever participating. But, the big but is that whatever the outcome, it's not going to be effective on china, because china enjoy an 'immunity' right granted by this very same convention.
      You are also under false impression or understanding regarding the chinese claim. The claim was filed at UN in 1947, it was not objected by anyone until in the 70s, when oil and gas were discovered. So who is the one that is after oil and gas? Not China for sure.

      It's only stupid westerners who called it south china sea because they saw a lot of chinese merchants sailing there but that doesn't mean it's owned by china...similar with indian ocean. does india own indian ocean? ...no it was just named after india.

    It is extremely biased. And somehow, it never addressed the question why US, being a country outside this region, should be involved? Besides, US admitted the claim of China, the ROC, over the South China Sea. Does US regret and change her mind?

      Lols still spreading misinfo, U.S didn't admit anything in regards to china's ownership of the FUCKING ENTIRE SEA, UNCLOS and maritime law provides a window as to how international waters, which the SCS is, is supposed to be divided between archipelagic and landlock nations. And china's EZ is only 50 nautical miles while those islands are 830 nautical miles away from china's southernmost tip.

      the US has territory in the region and is allied with quite a few powers there (Philippines and Vietnam to name the big 2) .. so yea it's involved

      Zeng Ruochen Michael well, they are legally binded to it since both u.s and china are signatories to UNCLOS which states that china has no proper claim in those islands.
      secondly, its international waters that sees almost 28% of all maritime trade vessels, so its a very big deal for all nations and seeing ghat under the u.s, those waters were kept open for everyone's use, then people trust the U.S more

    what they didn't tell you is that China actually owned the islands back in 70s, either ROC or PRC
    But VIETNAM AND THE PHILIPPINES STOLE those islands over the years by invading the islands during the night, the Vietnamese killed Chinese soldiers on one of the reefs in South China Sea. The Philippines landed a ship on another reef in 2006, and then they started occupying it for ten years.
    Also, China isn't the first country who started building islands over the reefs, the Vietnamese did it ; the Japanese did it-They've all damaged the environment just coz of they all wanted more control; mistrust of each other.

    • @GavinLiuranium
      @GavinLiuranium 8 років тому +5

      I agree. And now do you know what is so weird? China, Vietnam and Philippines have not started to take action yet, but Japan and America are already busy asking them to do this do that, weird right? It's Chinese territory, not Japanese or American. Yes, China still owns the islands today but it is not completely stolen by other countries.

    • @mariotam417
      @mariotam417 8 років тому

      under american judgement, those islands were given to China after ww2, China then gave 2 islands to Vietnam because they were communist countries. That's why China's claim on territories dispute mentions '9 dotted lines' instead of the '11 dotted lines', which China respects the Vietnamese authority on the given islands; also that was the international court of arbitration, which does not represent the international court of justice

    • @GavinLiuranium
      @GavinLiuranium 8 років тому +1

      The 11 dotted line has 9 dashes in the south CHina sea, 1 between Taiwan and Japan, and 1 between Mainland China and Taiwan.

  • @TheSunshineRequiem

    That earliest record and usage on DiaoYu island was from Ming dynasty around 1403, Japan's earliest record was around 1884 . what China want is simple, they want to regain its prosperity and become the "middle kingdom" again like the ancient time. what people in the west don't understand is that for the past two hundred years since opium war, China was very beyond in technology and faced humiliation with wars and treaties, for example, Hongkong was took way from UK. China do not want anymore of its territory be taken away again. when you want to talk about these disputes, please read some of its history too, otherwise, this kind video is just biased.
