Been working hard on my swing over the winter and still this summer and just not making good contact and getting good distance. Even though I am 66 years old, I am still very athletic and strong so there is no reason why I should not be getting more distance. Frustrating too when I see other videos of guys older than me taking 3/4 back swings and getting a lot more distance. After taking come videos last night I see now that I am flipping the club right near the impact and not getting a good release with my body getting all scrunched up. I know when I am taking a less than full swing, like when chipping, I do make good contact so this tip and drills makes a lot of sense and resonates well with me. Hopefully I can make some progress tonight and be on my way to making better contact. Even though this video is from 2016 it is still appreciated.
this has developed into a major problem of mine over the past month or so and it was really starting to take a toll on me mentally - losing about a club of distance on all my shots and very inconsistent strikes. gave your tips a shot and felt an instant difference... will definitely keep working on this. always have appreciated your videos but especially this one!

Thank you again for your GREAT instruction. I have been flipping for a LOT of years. my flipping came for getting more speed through the ball. I have seen myself with my arm are apart a lot so I have a lot to do. Learning to get my arms together and firm up and hips to rotate .
Great video! I just started opening the hips and transferring weight to the point to where the right foot is almost taking a step. Now my perfectly straight swing started flipping to the left. It probably a combination of my changed body position at impact and the fact that I've stopped keeping the wrist too firm. Hopefully this will help a lot.
Adam. Love you videos please keep them coming. Just wondering how this would continue through to complete a full follow through from this position. Or is it not a big deal? Any guidance would be much appreciated. All the best. Michael.
Michael, Thanks. Yes, it top players the body and arms decelerate prior to impact, sending energy out to the club. Shortly after impact the force of the club in motion pulls the body back into motion and through to a normal finish. That said, I wouldn't think of all that as you swing, just try this drill and allow yourself to finish. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Adam, great instruction as always. A pro once told me to go to the range for 2 weeks and hit nothing but punch 8 irons. He said to pretend there was a branch about 2 foot high just in front of my ball and think about hitting under it. The problem is that's all well and good if you have a fluffy lie because you're hitting off a pristine fairway like the one in your video or hitting off a tee. But 80% of the courses most of us play on the fairways are not that great and the ball is sitting more bare. It's just not that easy to not try and help it up out of that bare spot and scoop it. Of course I could roll it to a better lie but I try to play like the rules say. So it's just tough.
Eddie, Thanks for the comment. When the lie is bare the shaft must lean even more forward at impact, it tilts the sweetspot of club up against ball. A top player will consequently expect a slightly lower ball flight off a tight lie. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Great information. I've been having wrist pain after I play and I can feel the tightness all the way up to my shoulders. I hope this helps ease that pain.
Adam, what are you thoughts on "shallowing" the club on the downswing. I have seen some instruction to flatten the left wrist and set the right hand like you are carrying a tray. That seems like a lot of manual manipulation. Do you have a video or thoughts on this subject?
This is the biggest issue with my game. I struggle making solid contact and when I do strike it decent, it's usually a high ball flight and lacks distance. I believe it is a combination of my weak grip and lack of hip rotation. Great video, hopefully your tips will help me overcome this infuriating problem.
Stunning golf course!! WOW!! So we want to train the feeling of the arms and body stopping as we approach impact to get the feel of stopping flipping?? Really? What about the follow through dynamics?? What am I missing??
Alex, I a normal full swing there should be deceleration (not stopping) of the body and arms coming into impact, energy then transfers out to the club. Like, say baseball, the arms & wrists should 'firm up' to stabilize impact. The momentum of the club should be sufficient to take us to a full finish. In motion capture analysis, the body re-accelerates after impact due to the pulling force of the club. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Hi Adam I don’t flip my right hand at all ; but I instead I do a trail side arm bull whip with a flick of my trail right wrist. When I do this it is impossible for my right hand to overcome my lead left hand. Why? Because the flicking motion of my right wrist creates tremendous lagging of my club behind my hands making my lead wrist automatically bows creating the shaft lean that we see every professional player have in a still picture at the optimal impact when the club head meet the ball. I know you don’t teach this; but I would love if you have an open mind to try it. Hogan’s power of his 3 right hands. Cheers Remember simply Grip it and Flick it. No flipping or scooping allowed

Hi Adam, great video. Quick question, how many reps of the short finish drill should I do before seeing an improvement in my full swing? Also how would I transfer it into a swing with a full finish? Would I be simply creating the same feeling & then continuing to my finish? Thanks

Hard to say without seeing you swing, but I’d practice (on a small scale at first) a good robust popping straight of the wrists at impact. Keep doing this until you can use this motion to make club thump into the ground a little. Once that is somewhat reliable work on precision of hitting ground just past ball, and finally add speed and motion. Hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam
Hi, Adam! No matter the grip is, shall i feel/create pressure on the RIGHT side of the handle at impact? And how to deal with unstability of the handle in the left wrist, changing from cupped at setup into flat at impact position? Thnks!
+Antony Do Thanks Anthony. I think people feel things differently from one another (Hogan and Johnny Miller both had similar grips and left hand positions at impact. Hogan said he wanted two right arms to lash it with, Miller said he did it all with his left arm/hand). Hit some on a small scale, goals to feel some lag and 'pop' but also shaft lean/stability at impact. I'd focus on what you want the club to do, then just see what feels come to you. If they seem useful for getting the job done then add them to your personal bin of positive cues to go to. Have some fun with it and be patient, you'll make progress. Best, Adam
I think my flip might be caused by shifting my hips towards the target too early in the swing. How can I rectify this? It feels unnatural to just stop shifting weight!
Jacob, Hard for me to say what's happening without seeing you swing (I offer online personal lessons at www.scratchgolfacademy.com if you're interested). It's hard to shift weight too early, but try a few half shots with feet together and see if it helps. Best, Adam
can u show me how to shift weight as i am having the problem of rotating my hips too fast so that they go too much ahead at impact and the upper body remains backwards. basically upper body not firing or syncronizing with the lower body.
Thanks for the comment. It's a pretty deep topic, and plagues a lot of better players. The hips, after firing, have to decelerate in order for the upper trunk to then speed up and not hang back and get stuck. Mt guess is that your hips don't decelerate (or stabilize) enough. If it's of interest when my new premium site launches on October 12th we will have technology in place that will allow me to look at your swing and give one on one advice. Best, Adam
I was concerned that I was not hitting the ball correct at the driving range till I watched you hit the ball . I was practicing with a 7 iron and leaving a small diviot about every other shot
Christopher, Hard to say without seeing you swing, but I'd recommend a lot of half shots with short finishes to build the right habits. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Yes, I'd say you'd be looking for something like that. With a player with your skill you might soften the release (a little less held off with wrists) if you had a lie with some cushion under it and wanted to hit a higher, softer landing shot. Thanks, Adam
I appreciate your question. Having been at this game for over 40 years now I've come to see (what should have been obvious really) that you can't tell someone else how to do a motor skill. Could one person, in the strictest sense, tell someone exactly how to balance while riding a bike (no)? All they could do is give them the principles, and a safe environment, then the bike rider has to adjust for themselves. With most moves in golf it's the same. Learn the principles, then work on it in a 'safe' environment (half swings, minimal care for outcome etc), and develop your own feel. Ongoing feedback and coaching, of course, would be very helpful. Not trying to get on you, just sharing with you why I make videos the way I do. All the best, Adam
Thanks for the reply. I don't think you are"...getting on [me]" at all, that's not my concern. With your experience in the industry you must understand there are millions are videos out there, most of which say entirely different things about the same thing...its confusing at best. Even more, the golf industry is declining, particularly with the weekend golfer. Yet, the best a golf instructor can tell the weekend golfer is, work on it for a year or two and you might get it! This approach is not helping the game grow, that's my concern. My advice to you- a obvious professional-from me, a weekend golfer, you might get more traction if you can tell me emphatically, this is what causes flipping and this is the only way to stop it. Take it for what is worth. But, you can learn from hundreds of guys like me who surf thousands of UA-cam videos hoping to stop flipping at the ball. UA-cam instructors all saying different things to no avail and its really frustrating. Respectfully!
+lllbailey Sorry, just saw your reply. I'd say two things (not sure either is going to thrill you, honestly). 1) The cause and effect possibilities are a big part of it, and only very knowledgeable instructor with quality equipment is well positioned to diagnose it. What I mean is that the mind subconsciously adjusts to get the best result possible given the tendencies. Typical example, someone has a steep downswing plane so through impact they bend arms or raise body to create space. Can't fix those until the plane improves..etc. etc. 2) It's still a stick and a ball at the end of the day. Golfers (assuming they have understanding of how the club should work) that tap in to the innate skill of the mind, with practice get really good. Picture table tennis, a game where constant manipulation of the paddle is required. A few hours of playing and having fun breeds an increase in skill. This is why people usually can't find the definitive key on the Internet, it's just a skill THAT PERSON HAS TO AQUIRE FOR THEMSELVES. If I had 'the secrets' I'd be a famous multi-millionaire....clearly that's not the case. I'd encourage you to keep learning, but only use things like on line videos as cues to self discovery and learning. All the best, Adam

Hi, Adam! No matter the grip is, shall i feel/create pressure on the RIGHT side of the handle at impact? And how to deal with unstability of the handle in the left wrist, changing from cupped at setup into flat at impact position? Thnks!
+Antony Do
Thanks Anthony.

I think my flip might be caused by shifting my hips towards the target too early in the swing. How can I rectify this? It feels unnatural to just stop shifting weight!
Jacob,
Hard for me to say what's happening without seeing you swing (I offer online personal lessons at www.scratchgolfacademy.com if you're interested).
Best, Adam
thnx for your kind advise
is that normal to leave a make in the grass ?
Byron,
I think you're referring to the divots in the grass, yes that's normal for an iron shot.
Best, Adam
Thanks
I was concerned that I was not hitting the ball correct at the driving range till I watched you hit the ball . I was practicing with a 7 iron and leaving a small diviot about every other shot
Byron Nickels so long as your divot is after your ball and not before, otherwise that's a fat shot
Hey Adam, nice advice. By the way, that fairway looks insane, I bet the head-greenkeeper screamed like a little girl at 8:44.
Fortunately it was late in the day, he didn't see the offence

I can't seem to stop flipping. I go to try out new clubs (pumped up lofts) and they go the same distance as my old traditional lofted clubs.
Christopher,
Hard to say without seeing you swing, but I'd recommend a lot of half shots with short finishes to build the right habits.
Hope this helps.
Best, Adam
Im scratch golfer you think I would know this but its the same with a pitching wedge 50 plus yards out correct.
Yes, I'd say you'd be looking for something like that. With a player with your skill you might soften the release (a little less held off with wrists) if you had a lie with some cushion under it and wanted to hit a higher, softer landing shot.
Thanks, Adam
thank you like your vids .
Thanks!

But how do you do it during the swing?????

Sorry, just saw your reply.

Why is golf so complicated?
I hear you. I think it's the leaning clubshaft, and the ball being very small and down on the ground that make it seem complicated.

To create industries, just like the Cold War and Global Warming
Nz
Not sure what 'nz' means?
