Fantastic to hear an early version of this classic number. The Rock and Roll Animal version of this song is hands down one of the best tracks ever recorded
Absolutely made my day to hear this treasure. Can't thank you enough for posting this. As someone who has killed the Animal version of this, aboslutely have my socks knocked off, again, by Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner. This is just incredible, much longer than the recorded version, and dare say, better.
It's very tinteresting that in this recording you have all of the major tenents and application for the following concerts. What is magic is when the engineers and editing crew got a hold of the tapes, they mastered the ultimate version of what is heard on "Rock and Roll Animal". The depth that the final version has rivals "The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East".
This guitar playing touches my soul. Dick Wagner would have wanted to play with Lou if he would have asked later in life. Dick told me so in an email once.
This is an awesome rendition of the first intro and thank you for posting this. As legend would have it Lou Reed told Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner.... "Uh... I want you to write an intro to "Sweet Jane..... for tonight". And they said OK. Lou in comparison with the "Rock and Roll Animal" recording, waits a REALLY long time to enter here. He must have been blown away by the "INTRO". Strange how Lou's mic is not live for "standin on the corner, suitcase in my hand" opening line! Eh, gremlins!
R 'n' R Animal's version is, for my money, the best rock instrumental ever. For the coolest story involving these guys troll the history of the guitars on Train Kept A Rollin'.
When Lou died, a famous late night TV host said "New York City just became less cool." This intro is good, but not quite like incredible one on R'n'R Animal - the greatest guitar duet ever.
Ya'll should appreciate this story... After playing R&R Animal until the grooves were gone, the gang lined up for Reed's first visit to Philadelphia's Tower Theater expecting ecstasy. Just before the lights went down I noticed only one guitar on stage. MY GOD... No Wagner, no Hunter, Lou's going to carry the weight as the ONLY guitarist for the evening! We left early..........................
Sure sounds like my tape. Two individuals signed a contract with me to write a book about the RR Animal Tour. They just wanted to sit and watch me write the book, We merged 3 tapes (4 channels) and this sure sounds like it. They breached contract and swiped my tape.
My keyboard player is dad was a deputy who frequently stood at the gate. When we didn't have tickets, they'd give us a trash bag and when we brought it back full from cleaning the parking lot they would let us in for free. Here we are many years later still playing this song. ua-cam.com/video/RZ9s2ikF-QQ/v-deo.htmlsi=g8YWyDMKUeML5AvT
@@billyd8826 Thanks BillyD. I was influenced by Prakash John when I was 14 and just learning how to play bass. Playing along to his bass lines at an early age made me a very good player very quickly...

A very jazzy version for sure…. At this tempo, I can imagine this being played with a tenor sax and clarinet in the background.
Saw this at winterland in SF 1973 incredible

When I was a kid and heard about Joe Perry taking credit for Steve Hunter\ Dick Wagner I thought that was illegal and he might get arrested 🤣🤣🤣
Saw this in the Akron Civic theatre no idea how great it was till rock and roll animal album came out later

Interessante Version
Too much f'in noodling.
It;s called musicianship, something that does not exist today and most cannot relate to.
It's an intro, duh
