Back button is really preference some love it some don’t. I always suggest set these settings up and save it to c1 then reset back to default this way if you want dual back button you just flip to c1 or if you want regular front button just flip to manual or whatever you like to shoot in.

    This is amazing! But, maybe I missed something. The button to the right of *, when I hit that to lock it in, it’s not always in focus. Do I need to hit af-on first to get focus and then hit that button to lock the tracking in?

      I have used bbf through af on but the other button to the right of the *, you showed in your demonstration that you can hit that button to turn on the whole area af and you can let go of the button and it would track. But it doesn’t bring the image into focus. I think I’m missing something. I love this new set up, but feel like I’m missing something. Before I would use af on and just turn on the whole area af but the af on would get me into focus.

    The biggest difference for me is the Canon aperture closes down much sooner as it is being zoomed. With the Tamron you can be at f5.6 and 280mm whereas you'll be at F8 with the Canon by the time you zoom to 260mm.

    • @PPNJ
      @PPNJ 14 днів тому

      If I was given that choice I would go rf 70-200 every time. I’ve never personally used that lens but I’m pretty confident it will outperform the 24-240 in basically all situations unless you really want the wider angle view.

    The camera corrects the issues raised when in JPEG mode. The 24-240 is FF and fits both FF and APS-C. So if you start APS-C and decide on FF later, it's a simple move body only. I love my RP + 24-240. Added R50 + 100-400.

    I'm not understanding why this is needed. The system already just detects what you have set it to detect, humans, animals, etc and it does it pretty much flawlessly, (at least 90 -95% of the time, in my (limited lol) experience). What does this do extra? For a family session, I just zoom in on the family member I want to "star" in that photo, and it finds the eye pretty much instantaneously. Is this for like if I were switching back and forth among family members, or what does this accomplish? Sorry if this is a dumb question (very likely that it is lol).

    • @PPNJ
      @PPNJ Місяць тому

      I love the RF 85mm f/2. It’s super sharp and a great focal length for portrait work. I wouldn’t consider it a macro lens even though I know canon likes to market the stm primes this way. A true macro lens like the rf 100mm f/2.8L is capable of 1:1 images it actually goes closer and does 1:1.4 but the 85mm only can do 1:2 it still takes nice close ups but not true macro. Also the 85mm is slower to focus making macro very hard unless using manual focus.

      Not much you can do since dynamic range is a hardware limitation. I would do what you are and expose for the highlights and bring up the darks. Don’t bring them up to much though. Also neat video is a great plugin software for premiere pro. It cleans noise out of video footage very effectively so you could use that for scenes where your R7 struggles.

    I think you’ve made some very valid points there . When I decided a little late to the party, to go mirrorless I swapped my 5Div for an R5 , a little more resolution, a lot lighter , a flip screen and decent video (I’ve never had an overheating issue) , when the R7 came along I got that as a second RF body (I do events from time to time) with more reach and traded all my remaining EF glass in for RF and ditched the adaptor. In looking at the R5ii there isn’t anything thats going to make any difference to my kind of photography and it’s going to be a long time till I find something that either of these cameras can’t do. I have the custom settings mapped the same in both cameras for my own sanity. At this stage and I’ve been taking or is that making photos since 1967 and its no longer gear that holds me back its me 😀.

      @Chris-NZ 2 місяці тому

      @@betterpixs hi, not at all. the R5C is quite a bit more bulky with that fan stuck on the back🙁. Just comparing them on my desk the R5 and the R7 are very similar in profile with the R5 being a little bigger in all dimensions unsurprisingly with the bigger sensor. They feel similar in hand except I find the grip on the R7 brings your fingers closer to the lens than the R5. I did seriously consider the R6 when I was moving to mirrorless but as it had slightly less resolution than the 5Div I had been using for a number of years of years I thought I just go one step further (I do a lot of landscapes). I thought of it again when I was looking for a second RF body but the R7 was just too attractive on price and the extra reach bringing new meaning to my 100-500 in a way I didn’t full grasp before purchase 😀. I find the combo a very good paring. Cheers , thanks for asking.

    I also use the R7 and R6ii (and still have and use my 90D, 7Dii, and 5D classic) rather than move into the R5ii, which as a bird photographer I would like the 45mp for the ability to crop in a bit more, I decided to spend money of glass. I bought the RF 100-500 and RF 1.4x and the RF 200-800, also have the EF 100L f/2.8 macro, EF 100-400 Lii EF 70-200L F2.8 iii and a lens that is a hidden gem the RF 100-400 (works great with the R7 and R6ii) The one complaint I Have is I like the "wheel" on the R6ii that includes the on/off switch which I have mapped to EV makes it easy to change +/- the wheel on the R7 is also mapped to that just that I like the horizontal wheel better. I am waiting on a R7ii and hope it has a vertical grip (I created one from the battery grip for the 20D that works ok to stabilize my palm).

      @@JeffreyPadell are the large zoom lenses actually that sharp with the 1.4x?

    • @JeffreyPadell
      @JeffreyPadell 2 місяці тому

      @@betterpixs The 100-500 is almost as sharp but it is limited to 300-500, poor design on Canons part. The 200-800 is slightly softer but not bad, certainly better than my EF 100-400Lii with EF 1.4xiii. The RF100-400 works the full range with the RF 1.4x and is just as sharp.

    Great video. I currently shoot with a 7D MKii with EF100-400ii, mostly autocross (motorsports), here in the NJ, PA area. I am thinking of upgrading to the R7 or R6 mkII. I like the crop for more reach. How do you like the electronic viewfinder? Is that something you have to get used to, as the resolution is lower on the R7? I also noticed in the video Sayen Gardens, which is 5 minutes from my house.

    • @PPNJ
      @PPNJ 2 місяці тому

      @@autoxcsp coming from a DSLR yeah it’s going to be a big adjustment for you. At first it feels laggy and annoying but trust me when I say the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Once your brain gets used to it you won’t even notice it anymore. Seeing the exposure in realtime in the viewfinder is such a big advantage that I wouldn’t want to go back. The R6ii is less laggy than the R7 by a little bit but the smaller resolution has never bothered me. Yeah I’m also close to Sayen gardens. Also with the lag issues they usually only present themselves in lower light situations like when you’re indoors.

    Great vid, and subbed. R8 and R7 here. Many reviews suggest the R6ii/R8 has better subject detection and eye tracking, tho it seems a bit random to me. What’s your experience?

      My experience has been the full frame cameras do have better auto focus but not to the point it really matters I can get sharp images with both focus systems but I do find the R6ii has better focus then the R7 but only marginally.

    I thoroughly enjoy using my Canon R, R6, and R7. But I would be lying if I said there were no issues. And, it is sometimes hard to decide which one is my clear cut #1, because the bottom line is, that the R still takes the nicest looking photos of the trio. There’s only 1 camera out there - well, it will be soon - that I could drop in and use with all of my lenses that would give me a clear #1, and that will also solve most of the issues I have with my trio.

    • @ScottBasu
      @ScottBasu 2 місяці тому

      @@PPNJ absolutely. I’ve been licking my chops at the thought of a modern 5DSR in my clutches since the first rumors of them testing 60MP+ sensors years ago. But in that time also formed an admiration for “the other” R5 and the GFX100 series. The Canon R5 mk2 makes the most sense for me, but without a higher resolution RF body to truly compete at the 60+ level, the door seems still open to picking up another mount. Canon could close that door shut, possibly emphatically if they really wanted to, but it seems their primary motivators are elsewhere (AI sports AF innovation) right now.

    I love my R6 I and II. They are GREAT cameras. The dual SD cards give me peace of mind during wedding shoots. Plenty of quality and I don't want to sell out the 💰for the upgrades. My brother has a R5C for video work and I find it too bulky anyway. Happy to help another small photography channel.

    I belong to a photo club and I just got the R7 ( I had th 90d) I like the camera but just getting use to it . I see these new camera and must agree with you these are professional , you dont need to have the latest to be able to take good photo , skill yes , I think that 85% of the users will be happy with your set up ... I heard something that I thing is very relevant ... better to have ok gear and keep your money to travel to interesting place where you can take interesting photos.... and I must agree I am going to Tanzania for 18 day and taking my R7 with the kit lens and a Rf100-400 /. I will take my 90 as back up with 18-135, none of the big lens are coming ( sigma & Tamron) , I need to keep the weight down for this trip .

      Do you like the RF 100-400? I have some of the old EF 300 and 400mm primes and also used the EF 100-400mm. The zoom was not near the sharpness at least in the EF version. I was shooting with a 6D.

  • @ME2K23

    I recently got the R5 because its price came down as the R5 MK II is coming (to me the upgrades and additional cost of the R5 MKII are not worth it ). I kept using my 5D MKIII until then, and I also used a crop sensor (7D MKII) for most of my wildlife shots. Both are still like new and allowed me to make great photos. Since the R6 MKII is also at a discount price, I thought of getting that one + the R7 instead of the R5 but it would still cost more than the R5 only. I believe that a new version of the R7 could also be coming🤔, so I will wait and see if the best choice for my needs would still be the R7 or R7 MKII ... Meanwhile, my 7D MKII is still doing a great job when ( just like you mentioned) more reach is required. I agree with you 100%, its not required to have the newest gear to make great photos; knowledge and skills are the most important things.

    I don't know what I would do if I had all kinds of money so getting the latest models was just a sport. In the real financial world, I focus on the biggest bang for my buck, using my current gear for a few years so that the upgrades are significant, and, I suspect, way for more fun. In the past year I upgraded to an R7 and R6 mkII (Not simultaneously.) from an M5 (That was more complicated due to the lens situation.) and an R. Achievement unlocked!

    I think this shows that these cameras still pack a huge punch and for the money is a killer combo. (R6mkii and R50 user) Newer cameras are nice however for the average user it’s overkill and most of the “features” will never get used.
