Looks like a bit of rain and snow even until Tuesday evening next week. We've got the house wrapped up but come Wednesday morning, it's full speed ahead. I'm thinking the two of us can get it sheathed and underlayment down in 3 days. Metal should be here Saturday or Monday.

Don't tell the roofing company but we had expected something in the price range of 2500-3k. I still wish I could have convinced them to see the value in sponsoring our roof. Oh what great UA-cam exposure it would have meant for their company.😉 Have a great weekend!

Agreed. Love the sky in Arizona. (az resident also) we may not get much rain out of it but it make up for it with the clouds, sun sets, and sun rises.
That was really unusual! I grabbed my phone and scrambled up on top of the box beam to get some footage. Well, scrambled as quickly as an old guy can "scramble" that is. But I got it 👍☀️
@Alex Johnson While working in NYC in the 80's, before Photoshop, we flew out to Arizona to do a photoshoot just for the sunsets. Nowadays they just drop it in in post production. No thrill in that. ☹️
Looking out my window at all this snow up here in Flag and and a little rain in the desert seems awfully appealing. Good call on the white roofing. 👍🏼
Plenty of space here in Cochise County. You could become an inter-state snow bird! We had no intention of doing white panels and in fact, spoke only about light stone as the panel color while dealing with the salesman. But as we were leaving we decided to look at the rolls of metal out in the production yard. Then went back in to change over to white. The difference was crazy even between the white and light stone.
@@theupsideofdownsizing Growing up in the desert of Blythe, CA (on the AZ border), white roofs were the norm. Reflects that heat away from your home! 👍🏼

Thanks Don. We had an idea of what the materials for the metal roof would cost, and when I researched other options for a low slope roof, like EPDM and rolled asphalt, I thought the total cost of metal along with it's durability and ability to reflect heat, was money well spent.
Wonderful progress. I didn't realize the many steps to roof prep. Gives extra meaning to "keeping a roof over our head".
Agreed. That's why we went with metal. Doing it once and hopefully never again. At least on this structure.
Yup, nothing comes cheap but I totally agree with your color choice and reasoning. Great job on the facia and I look forward to how your rain conservation works on that roof. Oh, btw, the cob on your solar shed and the sculptures on it have withstood the weather quite nice! If it worked for the indigenous tribes in the desert areas for so many years, it was bound to be time-proven, eh?
Thanks for watching and your comments! Yes, we do have our cobb and earthen plaster mixes dialed in. They've survived the weather now beautifully. We honestly don't even think about whether they'll survive the elements or not. They will.

Cool looking build! Yeah metal has gone up a lot the past few years...
It has, but I did a cost analysis with EPDM as well as asphalt shingles ( l ommited asphalt rolled roofing because I don't like the way it looks) and the metal roof, while perhaps 10% - 15% more in cost, looks better, is better for rainwater harvesting and is, for me at least, easier to install. It also stays cooler than the other materials.
@@theupsideofdownsizing Agreed metal roofs are great! Even if they do cost a bit more... you get what you pay for and like you said better for rainwater collection too!
when i start a construction project i am always by myself, it sucks i have no friends lol
I agree the price of wood is ridiculous.Studs have gone up from 1.50 to almost 5 dollars

We spoke with Handeeman the other day about gutters and placement of a tank. We want to capture water for irrigation at first and eventually for the house, so it'll be a project that gets worked on in stages.

Thanks for watching and your question. They are actually straw bales and they are indeed carrying the weight of the roof without additional framing.
Regarding difficulty in getting good lumber: sustained low interest rates, sustained work from home = record housing starts - highest since 2006! You're competing with the professionals for building materials!

Yes, and I have a healthy respect for heights. In fact, I were to show me working at "actual speed" when up on scaffolding, it would be like watching paint dry 🤣. I move slow and deliberate.

Good choice going White. Thats what they do in Australia
I'm not exaggerating. Those white panels were the ambient air temperature which was about 55 degrees Fahrenheit whereas the other darker panels were probably 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Next time we go out there I'll take my laser thermometer.
Something I do with my fascia boards that isnt the norm..
I join them with a 45° cut between rafters
And back them with a second 20+- inch board behind to screw them to
That I put a 45° cut length wise to the bottom
so you have to look to see the backer board
I've never liked joining two boards together on a 2x4.(1.5 inchs wide) especially if they hang lower than the rafters
But that's just me...
Sounds like a solid system. I'm ok connecting them on the 2x6 rafter tails. The connection might not be the prettiest, but the facia will be mostly covered by our gutters anyway. Thanks for watching and your comments!
We love watching your channel. Concerning your choice of white for the roof; we understand it may be cooler come summer time but you said it is not visible. What about when you have friends fly in by chopper to visit ? LOL

My friends with helicopters wanted the white so they could find the landing pad easier. 🤣

Thank you. It was actually from a large Agave that recently bloomed. This stalk grows out from the center of the plant and blooms. That is unfortunately the end of this plants life cycle. It's a beautiful way to leave this world though. ❤️
The scaffolding might be easier to move if you DON'T pile the lumber and tools on it first! lol
It be even easier to move if the wheels didn't sink 4 inches in the sand. It's like trying to push a shopping cart on the beach🤣
Did you check out second hand metal roofing? Is there a way to do adobe roofing? Could you do a pebble roof or crushed glass? Oh boy...I hate those big ticket items...
We don't like the price either, but at least with a metal roof it'll out last me. We had a house in Savannah GA with a metal roof 105 years old!
at the end of the video, am i seeing strapping seals on the straps, or did you just tape down the tail ends to be out of the way? are the buckles sufficient to not creep and let out slack over the years?

What you're seeing is duct tape holding the tails down so that when we plaster the walls they don't keep flopping out on us we wanted to leave a little extra length on the tails just in case we need to go back and readjust any of the tension. Good eye!
Bill forgive me if I didnt catch this one but did you go with a heavy guage metal roof? When I had my shed to cottage constructed I had the option of going with a heavy duty metal vs less dense a material. I chose the heavy duty.
The 26 gauge heavy duty panels, also known as PBR are typically used in construction where the roofing is attached to purlins, hence the need for the heavier gauge. Since we are attaching it to sheathing, the lighter 29 gauge will be sufficient.

At 9:24, why do the trusses look to have different spacings ? Aren't they on 16" centers ?
They are 24" OC with the exception of the last 2 on the east side of the house. They are somewhat closer together due to the overall length of the house.
Can you share who the roofing company is? And does the copper penny look like a traditional copper roof? Thanks for any info! :)
The copper penny roof does indeed look like a NEW copper roof, but of course would not develope that beautiful patina that comes with time. I grew up in a house that had a small, old copper roof over a bay window, and it was beautiful.
