We continue to work on our roof, and with an impending storm coming, once again we need to wrap up the house. But this time, the storm is bringing 40 mph winds! We use a new tool help keep the tarps secure to the house. And to protect our floor, we come up with an unusual idea that turned out to be a great solution!

Well if there was ever any question on why the BOSS makes the big kibble, this video answers it. Construction supervisor, security, pest control, and companionship. A good leader is multi faceted.👍🏼 Hope you guys got everything battened down and ready for the snow. We’re still battling the snow. Since Fri, we’ve received close to 36 inches of wet heavy snow.
We got a whopping 3 inches of snow. But enough to get me outside to sweep off the solar panels. It's all gone now of course.

Love your precision with your woodwork, every time clamp, level, clamp, level, screw. Yvonne, have you done a tour of your van, cooking, bathroom etc? I’d be interested to see how your living during the process of building your home.

It'd be tempting to put some southwest style brackets (corbels? tails?) under the overhangs - at the corners, and mid-span where you added the 2x6 detail to the facia. And maybe add pieces of 4x6 under the mid-span 2x6, with the bracket / corbel beneath it? Just brainstorming - looks cool the way it is!

That plumb bob is just like the one I have from my surveying days. 24oz. that cap unscrews to allow changing the string and another steel point. the inner point can be used in tight places where the brass bob is too large.
Thanks for that info! I never even thought of trying to unscrew the cap. One thing is for sure, they don't make them like they use to. As cliche as it sounds, it's true. Thanks for watching!

nice job again! thats a great idea with the underlayment, i so wish we had protected our OSB in our loft from day 1, it has sure taken a beating. We are learning a lot from you two!

Great video Bill. Crisp and well edited. I definitely learned more about clamping things from you than any other source online. Great tutorials built in just by watching you work on projects. Bill is the cordless drill/driver (hitachi?) still available I wonder? I am reduced to pre-drilling everything with my inexpensive craftsman drill so its obvious I am not set up right. Appreciate the help. By the way I have about 6 in of snow here in my yard now so I figure you guys do as well. Cheers! - Don

We got about 3 inches of snow, but the night before we got a half inch of rain and the winds were howling! But the tarps with the cap staples held! Didn't lose a single staple despite 40 mph winds blowing for what seemed like hours on end! I did sweep the water out of the house at 11 pm. That underlayment worked beautifully. It was like a rubber swimming pool but swept out easily.
So glad that the bales survived.
Who is a good girl? Chloe is a good girl, taking care of those varmints!
You just know Chloe is going to park herself in that doorway on a regular basis even after the house is done. Hope you’re getting a screen door so she can continue to enjoy! 😀
Already picked out for both the front door and the French doors in back. I think we'll enjoy the cross ventilation as well as Chloe 😃
How did the bales hold out with all that wind, rain and snow? Did they get much moisture? Look forward to what's next!
Now that the box beam is strapped down and the trusses are up, the walls are rock solid as seen when I was planing down the boards. Wind no issue. The bales are so dense that even rain in moderation is not a concern. The worse would be for the bales to sit in water but the toe ups prevent that from happening. The outside of the bales were protected from driving rain. The inside walls had some surface dampness but dried out quickly. The roof begins TOMORROW!!!👍

I’m loving the journey of your build, and all the details you include. Here in Australia, we have big termite/ white ant problems when using plain/ untreated pine. Do you have any issues with Thame there? Just seeing how much pine you use.
Pine is pretty much the only species of lumber available in the US. You'll see that we use Cedar for our front deck too. Glad you're enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching!

It's just amazing :) Is it okay to just put the whole weight of the straw bales without the wooden frame? Wouldn't that be a problem with strong side wind?

looking great. truly an inspiration to me. i'm going to put up a straw bale structure this spring/summer in NE Ohio, although a bit more primitive using round timbers for the frame ... hope it goes as well as yours.
I'm originally from NE Ohio. Timber frame constr should serve you well in that part of the country.
Not trying to be Nurse Nanny but you need to read up on the Hantavrus and field mice in AZ and NM. Be very careful - its VERY deadly and contagious from even the dried mouse feces.

You know Dan, I don't really know. But I did say to Yvonne, why not just leave it down as a form of vapor barrier. I'll have to research it bit it's definitely a consideration.
@@theupsideofdownsizing With my ever so limited knowledge of such things, I would say that as long as it's permeable, it should be fine. But I'm sure there's a youtube video or two that can clarify that potentially false assumption. Lol.
