My mum has been wanting to make a virus pattern tablecloth but all the patterns were square. I googled and behold, one of my favourite youtubers has this!! Love it and I will be passing it along to my mum!!
This is genius to use a granny rectangle as the base to turn the virus blanket into a rectangle into a square! I love it!

I am completely in love with the virus stitch. When I viewed your 1st virus shawl and got the hang of the pattern...I was hooked. Since then I've made about 5-6 shawls. Now with the virus blanket, it'll be the same way . I've never loved a pattern as much as I love the virus pattern. I know now why the name, once you get it, you can't stop making it and it just spreads! Thank you so very much for your great and easy to follow videos. Please keep them coming! !!

Oh, you deserve it. I know many people try to create good videos-- and they do mean well! But I think it's probably harder than it appears. I know I certainly couldn't do it. Few are able to master all the necessary components. But you do a very good job and deserve to be recognized for it.
I'm now in the process of making this afghan and in the course of doing it, I had a couple of other thoughts on this topic.
1. IF you wanted the dimensions to be longer, how would you add a second arch on the sides...? That is, in the first round of arches? How big would the center have to be? This is lovely but I still find it to be a bit squarish. I'm hoping this afghan will be good for a twin or full sized bed.
2. Have you considered making a video about planning an afghan project? I love making afghans and am relatively competent with them. But I rarely follow patterns -- I prefer to find a stitch I like and go from there. So I've learned the hard way when it comes to the in's and out's of afghans. I doubt I'm unique in this so I've thought it would be a good topic for a video.
For instance, I think it's worth it to make a sample swatch first when using different yarns, both to gauge the size and to see the color pattern chosen. There's nothing worse than getting 20 rows in and realizing what you thought would work, doesn't.
Anyway, that's just a thought.

I absolutely love your videos. You are very clear to understand and your instructions are great. I am using this pattern to make some place mats which really only require that I do the "inner" granny square foundation, and 2 repeats of the "virus" rows. I was wondering though, if you had a suggestion to "even" up the outside edge to square it off, so to speak. Please keep making your videos.....they are awesome!

I am working on it now, but it looks like you need to have multiples of four clusters on the long side MINUS one cluster (4x-1). Then instead of doing a sc in the top of a dc, put it in the space between the clusters.

Started the square virus blanket today! Would you be able to add a note about the yarn differences in the description of that video? The tidbit at the beginning of this video would have been so helpful before I started. I'm using the supersaver redheart and I'm sure that's why my blanket won't lay flat now that you mention it. The virus stitch looks really complicated but nice to look at reminds me old dollies.
So you work this pattern until it's the size you want? And it is a rectangle? The baby blanket in the beginning looks like it's a square. Love your teaching method btw!

Hi Joanna...so I've been playing with this and I decided to use v-stitches instead of the Granny stitch. Same starting chain. Just replaced the Granny stitches with v-stitches. It works but I'm not sure I totally like it. I feel like they should be small shells instead. I'd be happy to share a pic if you're interested.
Hello! I’ve actually got a pattern coming out that is the rectangle Victoria’s German shells blanket and it uses the V stitches to begin too. It works better if repeated. I’m working on using the Virus stitch to start the rectangle. Eventually I will master it! 😄 I’m happy you got a chance to try other stitches!

Love your style of instruction. I have started the oblong pattern but I don’t know how when to start changing to the Granny Square stitch and then how to start back on the Virus stitch. Is this part of your instruction video? 💜
This pattern only uses the granny stitch as a base. The rest of the blanket is Virus Stitch.
I thought I'd experiment a bit, and figured out how to start this with an oval in the centre instead of the granny rectangle. It took a bit to figure it out, but I actually really like it with an oval in the centre.

+FrancisBowieBeans this blanket was only about 26" on the short side. Like a baby blanket.
A lot depends on the yarn you use and hook..... but if I wanted to make a blanket that big with worsted weight yarn and a G 4.25 or H 5.00
I would have 2000 or 2400 yards on hand.
That's a good sized blanket and I've not actually done one that big.
I'd go with a yarn you know you can get more of.

If using a cake yarn do you have to cut the yarn and start again to begin the virus pattern? Seems like you should be able to continue working without doing so.
Hi. Love this pattern. Why do you not recommend the thicker yarn?
You can definitely use thicker yarn I can do this pattern in any yarn. But many were having issues with it rippling. When your tension is a bit off it can mess with the lacy design. Thinner yarn is a little more flexible and forgiving. Try any yarn you like! Thank you for watching and commenting.

love your video, it makes such a complex looking pattern seem quite easy to do. I love this pattern. Is there a version of the rectangular one where the center is also styled like the shells rather than a granny stitch?
I still haven’t been able to work it up staring with the shells. I will figure it out at some point though! Thank you for watching and commenting!

She saud: a lot depends on the yarn you use and hook..... but if I wanted to make a blanket that big with worsted weight yarn and a G 4.25 or H 5.00
I would have 2000 or 2400 yards on hand.
