  • POINTED PEN BASICS is something I recorded for the students in my online classes. The information, I hope, will be helpful to anyone who is picking up a pointed pen for the first time. It will help with table set up, proper posture, pen hold, nib preparation, ink choices, and much more. For those who are more experienced I hope that you find a tip or two that will be useful to you. You can check out my online calligraphy and illumination classes at www.acornartsclasses.org Private online lessons are offered. Enjoy!

So many people ‘tutoring’ online seem to try to give the impression that everything is easy. Calligraphy can be easy - if it’s done badly. And it can also be the most beautiful artform and occupy a lifetime of study. Think of the calligraphy of the Arabic speaking world, and of the medieval European monks, who did nothing but write manuscripts all day. Be grateful for their legacy of skill and beauty when you pick up your felt-tip pen and do a few scribbles. And I say thank you to this teacher for taking things seriously.

Unbelievably awesome. I have tinkered with calligraphy over the years but recently picked up an oblique holder and some decent ruled practice paper. I was struggling getting good lines with a straight holder and sure enough the angle of the oblique helps my larger hands. I'm in my 30s so it is taking a bit of work trying to retain my bad habits. I'm not exaggerating when I say that your video is incredible. Thank you so much.

Thank you for your wonderful instruction. I have read many books and many tutorials, yet your calm voice and concise explanation taught me a lot. Rarely do I find holistic teachers who are invested in passing on the basics and the reasoning for the postures and tools, which are vital to the long term success of the student. I look forward to more of your videos and searching for your work online. Again, my gratitude for your efforts in recording and passing on your knowledge on this video.

Is 'pointed pen' the same as 'calligraphy'? I've never heard it referred to that way. Off to check out that website now. Laura

Thank you so very much! This video is just what I was looking for and it took me a couple days to find. I am so new to this that I feel like a kindergartener! I am sure your videos and the recommended Iampeth association will give me a great beginning in my new endeavor. I have no idea how much to expect to pay for one of the pointed pens like you showed but I am totally in love with them. When I first started watching videos I thought I just needed a better fountain pen. I am so glad I kept watching before I invested any money in a pen. The type of calligraphy I am interested in learning would not be achieved I believe with a regular fountain pen like I thought I needed. I have the hope to achieve at least a nice basic foundation for my calligraphy training so that I might actually learn to write some of the less fancy alphabets I have seen. I would dearly love to make my own greeting cards with my handwriting instead of always using decorative rubberstamps. I think the satisfaction factor would be improved greatly. I look forward to learning much from your videos. Thank you again for sharing them!!!

Thank you for this beginning instructional video. I had calligraphy lessons years and years ago, but never did I learn what is being used today. I sit down to practice and I am immediately lost. Your video began with correct posture and table height. That was sooo helpful! I like the suggestion of the guide sheet (a forgotten tip) and the playing card. Good tip for gliding. I have cleaned my pen nibs with alcohol as was suggested by other teachers, but I find the Daler Rowney Pearlescent acrylic and the Dr. Ph. Martin's Iridescent Calligraphy Colors still blob on the paper. There must be a dilution suggestion that I have not heard. I do have a recipe for Pearl Ex. That one topic is something that I have tried to search out. "What happens when method for preparing your nibs does not seem to work." I figure it must be the manner I am using any given ink. I have not used my Sumi ink yet, but have used a bottle of Speedball ink that we used in class. The ink does not dry quickly and remains sticky weeks later. Another topic that I hope to see listed is what nib to use with what ink. I did wonder about lighting. I recently saw that natural daylight is recommended - you have Ott lighting which I have thanks to my days of fine handsewing. Again, thank you for your wonderful video. More, please. RIP Spence ✝
