  • After three massive failures during the winter, we hit up Jenny Creek and Rollins Pass in the middle of summer to get through the trails and make it to the peak. This is a great scenic trail! If you want an easier drive, stay on Rollins Pass, if you want a bit harder, take Jenny Creek.

    In the late 1970s I drove to and from Winter Park to fish. I had an old steel cabbed Willys CJ5. Got stuck alone in a snow storm on the West side just before the trestle. Had to dig myself out of a snow drift to get going. Fun stuff…when I was young!

    When I went up E Rollins, there was a Scion XB at Yankee Doodle. That assures that you can get up there in anything. 😂 From what I understand it was once just a regular dirt road that has not been maintained and eroded away since the tunnel collapsed. I still haven't fixed the 4wd in my S10 Blazer since I went up there last. Didn't have it in 4wd when I turned into Jenny Creek at the top and got off camber and stuck, unable to engage 4wd. Good times.

    I drove up almost to the closed needles eye tunnel in 1995 in an 86 Honda prelude 2.0si

    back in the 70's the tunnel was open and you could get all the way through, my scout troop hiked from Rollinsvill up over the pass to Winter Park, the tressels on the west side are fun to walk over

    Nice footage! I'm a local living in Rollinsville. That's actually an abysmal amount of snow up there for mid July, this summer was brutally hot by high country standards - we lost our snowpack far more quickly than normal. It's another couple of miles hike beyond the tunnel to get to Corona Pass where you can see winter park, but it's totally worth it: the views are spectacular and you get to walk across the old train trestles!
    Also, word to the wise: you cross into Boulder County as you head up to Yankee Doodle Lake. The reason this matters is they'll sometimes have a ranger sitting up there because motorcyclists keep trying to bypass the gate on Boulder Wagon Road, and the Boulder County rangers are real sticklers about drones. From your footage here they might have slapped you with two nasty fines: flying more than 400 vertical feet above the operator (tunnel is ~550ft above lake) and flying over wilderness (wilderness boundry is only about 30 feet west of the road near the tunnel). The height thing is incredibly important - there's a sight-seeing prop plane that ducks over that ridge almost every weekend in the summer. How'd you even do that BTW? All commercial drones I know of are firmware locked to prevent them from flying 400ft above their takeoff altitude, and you've got to get an FAA license to remove this lock.

      The rule is that you can’t go more than 400’ above ground level, not above the operator, and I never exceeded that. It’s not based on the takeoff point, that’s just how the DJI drones work by default. I’ll have to double check on the wilderness area as my map didn’t show it.

    I got a wild hair back in 89 and rode my 750-4 Honda road bike from Englewood Co up thru the tunnel, Coming back down was tricky to say the least. Trail 502 at the dead end was the first time we saw a mountain lion during Sunday breakfast stop.

    Heading up there tomorrow to do some leaf peeping and test out how my wife handles the Teryx4 S-LE in this area. I have been up to the lakes many times and road our motorcycles thru the tunnel and over Homestead road to Winter Park, ate lunch there, the back over to the Moffat Tunnel Parking lot. Nothing technical but beautiful area. I will let you know what it was like.

    The old trail when you drove up the creek was much more fun and higher difficulty.

    Just as "aside:" the word is "Rollins" pass(Rawlins), nor "roll-ins" pass.

    I drove over Rollins Pass in the late 1970's in my 1966 Ford Fairlane GTA car and driving through the tunnel and ending up in Winter Park. What happened to the road?:?? I would also catch my limit of trout in Jenny Lake.

      The tunnel was deemed to dangerous and was closed. Erosion over the years has really made it an extremely rough ride.

      @@TrailTraveler The tunnel caved in twice. The first time it was repaired, but caved in again a few years later. Somebody was hurt in the second cave-in and sued Boulder County. IIRC, the cave-ins happened in late '80's to early '90's time-frame. After that, Boulder county, which is responsible for the part of the road with the caved in tunnel, decided not to repair the tunnel again. You can still reach the top of the pass from the west side, but there is no legal way to get a vehicle all the way through. Before the cave-ins, it was a graded gravel road that pretty much any car could drive. You can still get just about anything with decent ground clearance up either side of the main pass road. It has deteriorated to the point where there are some pretty rough rocky sections, but, since it's an old railroad grade, the slopes are mostly quite gentle.

    There is a trail that starts down by Yankee Doodle lake but has been gated off. It does not go through any tunnels. Anyone know why that was closed?

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  8 місяців тому

      Jenny Creek ends at the lake, it might have seasonal closing if that’s the trail

    • @booger65man
      @booger65man 8 місяців тому

      That’s not what I’m talking about. Right at the end of your video as you’re coming up the trail you go up a pretty steep section before you make a left turn and the trail comes out at Yankee doodle lake. Instead of making that left turn if you go straight on up the hill you’ll run into a gate. If you look on Google maps you can see a trail that goes on up over the pass.

      Ahh, you must be thinking of Boulder Wagon Road - It has been closed for years. Here is some info about it. risingsun4x4club.org/xf/threads/boulder-wagon-road.19943/

    • @booger65man
      @booger65man 8 місяців тому

      Yes, that’s it. So that will never be reopened?
      It’s interesting riding around up there how there are gates and no trespassing signs found on a lot of trails that are marked as open on the US forest service website.

    I don't know if I just missed it our something, but I sure didn't see any real obstacle on Jenny Creek, certainly nothing that warrants the 7/10 rating I just saw on one of the 4x4 apps.
    How busy was it? I've always thought about camping up there but imagine it's super busy on the weekends and fills up quick.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  2 роки тому

      I rate it as a low moderate and that's because you need some clearance to get over the tree stumps. Years ago, it was a much harder trail. We went on a Sunday and while Rollins Pass Road was pretty busy, we never saw anyone else on Jenny Creek.
