My grandfather enlisted in Maharaj's Army back in 1944 when he was just 14 years old. He used to recount to us that, at that time, his uniform was too large for his frame, and his shoes were bigger than his feet. He actively participated in both the 1948 and 1965 Indo-Pak wars. After Nehru's decision to halt the 1948 war, some of our soldiers, who had already advanced near Muzaffarabad, had to remain in Pakistan, and my grandfather was among them. He spent a month there, and during this time, he was declared deceased. However, my great grandmother had a strong belief that he was still alive, and remarkably, her instincts proved correct. Subsequently, he became part of the Indian Army following J&K's merger with India. His views were similar to this officer, and, being a Dogra, I possess deeper insights into the on-ground realities.

Col.Raina your submission of Nehru's suicidal decision to stop forces from pushing in from Uri on 10th January brings goosebumps. My late father was part of the young Indian soldiers equipped with kukris among other weapons eagerly waiting to attack.. Alas didn't happen and we inherited today's huge Kashmir problem... Dislike for Nehru due to this is among scores of 90yrs + Bharatiyas.

@ashwinzagr8This is also a false narrative created on hindsight. If supply lines were getting closed how could they think of sending them to farther Poonch, while Uri areas to b recaptured were nearer?

I am a Kashmiri pandit myself and what saddens me is the current state of Hindu youth especially in my own state, be it a dogra or kashmiri. During my childhood i once had to wait for my father near Rajinder Park which made me curious to read about who this man was and I was amazed and disheartened to realize that very few of my classmates knew about him. Somehow i got one copy of the order by Maharaja Hari Singh which Colonel Raina talked about (Last man standing) and i swear before man and god, I had goosebumps while reading that.

In all of Indian history I see one thing common is no unity amongst people. That's why the British won comfortably. Biggest reason for the failure of 1857 revolution was no one supported the sepoys when they rebelled. The Sikhs, Gurkhas and Dogras fought for the British. They fought for them again in first world war 1914-18 and then again in the second world war. So when you are yourself willing to be a slave to your master then where is the fight for independence.

As a Pakistani born, I totally agree with your comments, however, one should understand that India was never a unified country or a federation except the last 100 years of British rule. Again, the present boundaries of India is even larger than the British empire with the inclusion and amalgamation of States and princely areas. The reasons for Dogras, Sikhs and others fighting for Britishers was simple: they needed jobs food and money for their families. The Britishers still come to Nepal to recruit Gurkhas for the British army. During the US civil war, which was fought on the basis of slavery, the Balacks even joined the Confederate forces which was fighting against the Federal forces to preserve the institution of slavery.

The enigmatic demise of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose remains one of India's most enduring mysteries. Despite his pivotal role in India's struggle for independence as the founder of the Azad Hind Fauj, our history books barely scratch the surface of his remarkable life. As Indian citizens, it's our right to uncover the truth about this national hero and his untimely demise.

    Col. Raina
Thanks for the book and exposure.
I had been to Srinagar 55 years ago and I too was addressed as
“इन्डिया से आये हो”. This was by a Kashmiri Muslim in front of a Pundit Vaidyaraj who asked him not to do so; It gave me pain which persists till today as the Pundit simply asked him to keep quiet and DID NOT CHALLENGE the commenter
