Frank Skinner on being Catholic and a comedian

  • Frank Skinner is a comedian, broadcaster and author who has entertained millions through TV shows such as Fantasy Football League, The Frank Skinner Show, Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned and Room 101, as well as many sell-out stand-up comedy tours. Frank’s love of comedy is surpassed only by his love of football. He is a lifelong supporter of West Bromwich Albion and, with David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds, penned ’Three Lions' the best known football anthem of modern times.
But Frank’s other great love is his Catholic faith, something he reconnected with after initially trying to walk away from it in his early twenties. In 2021 he wrote A Comedian's Prayer Book which featured his thoughts on hell, judgement, atheism, money, faith and the X-Men among other things. But how does a comedian square edgy and sometimes crude standup routines with churchgoing and confession? Isn’t faith just very unfashionable in the comedy circuit? Or are comedians trying to fill a God-shaped hole along with everyone else?
    For Re-Enchanting: www.seenanduns...
There’s more to life than the world we can see. Re-Enchanting is a podcast from Seen & Unseen recorded at Lambeth Palace Library, the home of the Centre for Cultural Witness. Justin Brierley and Belle Tindall engage faith and spirituality with leading figures in science, history, politics, art and education. Can our culture be re-enchanted by the vision of Christianity?

I love Frank and I'm gutted his radio show is ending. However, I was brought up a Catholic and my 'Brave Stance' was at 9 years old when I told my class and teacher that I was an Atheist when I didn't even know the word. The teacher then tried to shame me by trying to turn the class against me, and also asking to imagine what it was going to be like in hell because I don't believe in God. She was unsuccessful and I am proud of myself looking back on it, a brave stance for a 9 year old. Oh yes... His Poetry Podcast is fantastic also.

Woke/pro-LGBT-ideology is not Catholicism. It's heresy, & it's terribly destructive to human beings, especially children. I hope Frank can take the time to learn Catholic theology and morality on this subject. It's very important for his soul and for the Church. Woke/LGBT ideology is certainly not Catholicism 100% correct. Yet (ironically) the changes made to inheritance and marital law in 6th Century Europe created the modern world and lead to Western Pre-eminance. This then leads to the Protestant Reformation in early Modernity - and the Woke values we have today in the West... no accident they didn't come from Saudi Arabia. You can read more in "The WEIRDest People in the World; How the West Became Particularly Prosperous and Psychologically Peculiar" (Joseph Henrich).

It's strange hearing someone talking about Christian and yet saying that the modern day acceptance of homosexuality is a moral advance, the two things are mutually exclusive. Jesus was the Messiah and he was a messenger for his time, just like Moses was for his time and Abraham for his! Muslims, believe that Mohammed was a messenger for his time.
To believe in the one God is fundamental to worship. We cannot pray to Jesus as a deity or worship any other idols such as saints which the Catholic religion would have you believe are worthy of reverence? What is the first commandment in the Bible Exodus? I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.

Jesus Himself said that nobody can come to God except through Him (I agree that we cannot worship any idols or saints as the Catholic church believes, that is not scriptural), He is not simply a messenger, He is one with God and is completely Holy, that is why He died for us so that we could have His righteousness and be able to spend time with a Holy God. Where the big issue for Christianity and Catholicism in particular arises is *what do I stand for?*….do I stand for anything and fall for everything??

David Baddiel has been so harsh on Frank and his faith. Says it's all based on a fear of hell. Of course we are all worried about what comes after but for me it's about making the most of life while we are here. My only issue with his (and the hosts) presentation of religion and catholicism here is that in the UK we're within a generation or two of religion maintaining its multi-millennia oppressive and damaging grip on society. Most of the world still lives under this form of oppression. In America, atheism continues to be career Hari- Kari for politicians. An interesting conversation, but some of the points feel like a stretch.

Interesting stuff. I think it highlights a key issue, namely that of 'enchantment'. Frank and the hosts are quite right to insist on the necessity of religion evoking 'enchantment', however in my view, wrong to insist that it has to be straightforward literalism, and frankly I just don't think there's much hope of 21st century man embracing it that way. The alternative is to see the supernatural as mythopoetically and symbolically true, to see it through a Jungian lens, that sees 'the magic' hiding in the unconscious, and the religious as tapping into the archetypal patterns that hide there. That is a different perspective that we've lost sight of, but one that carries deep truth. We now just see it as fantasy, sentiment and whimsy, but from a Jungian perspective its conjoining you with the deep mystery of life, that ultimately nothing can explain, but which can be brought into a higher consciousness that leads to wholeness

I enjoyed this alot. I liked the fact that I agreed with some of what Frank said and a few fundemntals I didn't and a few things to highlight regarding interpretations and struggle between post modernistic type views regarding gender, structures and deviation from source material with a mindset that as a religion it needs to compromise and move with times so to speak. I disagreed with frank in regard to there is a fundermental structure in place for a reason, the truth and God is a blueprint for a successful life. We are all sinner by default and why he died for our sins. I think we're I disagreed with how frank explained it was that marriage is the joining of two people out of love, a commitment to be there through life and all the challenges it brings. Its there to platform the bringing of new life in children as a family. I think science and man has confused and muddied the waters and because we now have woman having children for couples who cant it then asks us a difficult question. If God is the creator and he gave us science isn't the practice then more acceptable? We also have to understand why do we bring a child into this world for us as a couple,? Being a parent is sacrifice and the world becomes about them, if your doing it for self serving reasons thats the wrong place to start.God has given us many opportunities to be able to do many things, some good for us some not and perhaps we should be asking just because we can, should we? If you consider making a family and family it means to create somthing long term and good, if it's sex for quick dopamine with no meaningful connection tion the end is empty. My point being that the plan and blueprint is there. It does not evolve to suit society if its the truth than people will come to it which is why u see people who have had difficult lives wrong choices building their relationship with God and there own self. What we can be as believers is forging and compassionate with humility. The religion is not there to dehumanise or osterisize anyone, that's the very people it's there for as by the very nature of all our sins and faults, we dont deviate but have compassion in the delivery. His word is in us in our own conscious of an awareness of somthing greater thsn ourselves. I also don't agree with the other gentlemen, yes God is the truth but the moment u demean someone else's connection through God if they are another religion is the moment u allow your own ego in. The truth and word of God is enough and that confidence is actually knowing he is with u means you don't need to fight to get someone to listen. They will come.u can't force morality through law, u can't make someone see, u have to know darkness to build relationship with the light

They’re not exactly Clooney and Pitt themselves. So when l hear that he’s a Christian it somehow makes it worse and yet he hates someone saying “Jesus Christ” but believes we were all born perfect 😂
When l was about ten years old my parents had the TV on and l was in another room but l heard there had been an horrific motorway accident- it was icy on the roads and there was a thick fog came down and tragically 19 people lost their lives in the resulting pile up. A “man of the cloth” came on and said he knew a couple who had lost their lives. He said they were lovely people, regular church goers (neither of which l dispute) and then he said “I keep thinking why them?” 😮 Why Anyone? That put me off religion if that’s how their minds work.

The thing about religions is that they require people- and people aren't perfect. They come in all shapes and sizes, have merits and flaws to one degree or another, the idea that people with faith have to be perfect in order to be considered to be truly faithful is strange. Frank isn't "pius", he's absolutely aware of his flaws and can talk quite honestly about them. 46.00 We are all praying to the same God, - straight from the Bahá'i principles and one of the main reasons I became a Bahá'i.
'Every human creature is the servant of God. All have been created and reared by the power and favor of God; all have been blessed with the bounties of the same Sun of divine truth; all have quaffed from the fountain of the infinite mercy of God; and all in His estimation and love are equal as servants. He is beneficent and kind to all.
    Abdu'l-Baha

Yes. And thank God for that. A watered down Christianity that wants to be 'nice' in the face of the culture war without making judgements or pronouncements that hold to orthdox teachings would not be Christianity at all.

@@ShineNoelA what did Chesteron say? ' The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it's been found difficult and left untried.'
