TIP: I use a fluffy "blush" brush to clean the soil off the roots. I tap off most of the soil, then place the roots in a bowl of water, and while they are submerged, I use the blush brush to gently remove the remaining soil. Next, I dunk the whole plant in a tub full of clean, warm water to cleanse the leaves, nodes, root mass, etc. in order to remove dust and wash off any pests that might be too small for the naked eye to see. Finally, I give [most] plants a transition period in which I keep the roots in a very, very weak solution of distilled water (or better yet, rain water if I can get it!) and SuperThrive, Clonex, or any "boost" I'm using at the moment for about 2 weeks before I settle them into pon. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not---I clean off the roots and place them in a "strengthening" bath one weekend, change that "nutritious" water the second weekend, and pot the plants in the rocky substrate two weekends after that. I actually find the process of repotting faster this way since I'm dividing it into smaller-tasks sessions. I've never lost a plant converting them this way!

Very interesting. Thanks for the tip for stressed plants. I also cover it with a plastic baggie and this increases the humidity. I suppose that’s basically the same thing? I have also experimented with Lecha as my “Reservoir” in a clear pot and then using a Chunky, Airy Soil mixture which works well. It cuts down on guessing when to water and as long as the soli isn’t being submerged in the water the Lecha will transfer the moisture to the soil. Or using a string or Wick and making it long enough for the complete vessel and running it to the top of the soil it also becomes a self watering pot. I’m still experimenting with organic substrate and there’s a few benefits that are appealing. It’s reusable, looks attractive in the right vessel, unless you use Over the Counter substrate then it takes up as much room as the soil composition, but it’s not so messy. At the moment I have less than 10% from my 100+ babies in organic mixture and I think it will stop at possibly 15% if nothing goes South. But soil, DIRT is just more Sensual. To Pimp my own Soil and be responsible for my plants growth based on watering, soil composition, and light and music just fits me better. Either with organic or soil, I have this feeling of “cooking” for them. Sometimes more effort does equal better results, but not always. A small criticism. With the water shortage through the World I use a pot to catch warm water and then dip and shake the soil into it instead of running water. It works for me and it saves water, which is running out. Thanks for the water tip! I have tried the leca at the bottom of a chunky coil mix for my homalomena since they kinda like to stay moist and it loves it! It’s basically a self watering set up. And I agree mixing up soil deff gives more of the feeling of caring for your plants lol thanks again for taking the time to write a thoughtful comment I really appreciate it ☺️💚
Hello Lauren I’m back again for some helpful tips. Actually this is a cry for HELP!! I’m new to semi hydro and although I find it practical, and am somewhat fascinated by the process, I have my problems with my Frydek. It habe 2x rooted Babies in a Lechuza SW pot and from the beginning they loved it. I was getting a new leaf, bigger than the last one every week. The Vibes were great. I am using a 7-3-6 Bio mixture and they loved it. I’m not sure if it’s because I did increase the dosage from 1ml/ l to 3ml/l that I killed them, but I was told that in the beginning I should water them from the top over the substrate/ balls for the first few weeks? After about a month and she giving me 9 leaves on 2x plants I decided to check my roots. I have since taken your advice and obtained clear pots for root observations, but at that time I had 0. I saw the “Transformation ” from soil to water roots taking place so I cut off the slimy roots and repotted her. It broke my heart to see her leaves start hanging and them slowly turning yellow. Therefore I am guilty of killing her with too much liquid love? Help a Brother out. What aside from the obvious can I do to during the Transformation phase? There were hardly any roots left so I put her in water and she drowned. This is my favorite Alocasia and although she was doing better than ever 1 false step and she went to the Light. I appreciate your help and videos are very peaceful and informative. Keep informing those Willing to learn. Tschuess.
Hi Brian! Sorry to here you frydek isn’t doing well..I’m not exactly sure what may have caused the decline. an increase in fertilizer has a possibility to cause burn but when transferring to semi-hydro plants may need and increase of light to help with root development when goin through the shock/change..sounds like you did a great job with the transfer tho..and at times for unknown reasons things jus go left. Do you still have the plant at all? Like a stump and/or corm? If so I’d, remove and remaining dead roots..put it in chunky perlite with a reservoir in a sunny spot or right under a grow light..but deff keep a reservoir. If you have a corm I’d throw it in a prop box and again under a grow light or sunny spot. Hope this helps!!💚
I have just gotten out of a process of repotting that same calathea (geoppertia) that you have and have made just all the mistakes possible!
Partly it wasn’t my fault because it was a large plant that had very weak thin roots and when I took it out of the pot (two weeks after I bought it) 4/5 of them just crumbled in my fingers even though I was very gentle. I washed the earth off as good as I could but I didn’t manage to get everything off and I hadn’t cleaned the substrate well enough. I added larger pumice to lechuza pon for that. Also I bought a pot that was larger and gave part of the plant to a friend. I had divided some of the rhizomes. So imagine trying to plant five rhizomes with large leaves in a 30cm pot into a 1-1 mix of pumice and pon. I wanted to cry. Then a few days later I dropped my pot into the bathtub when I wanted to water it thoroughly and see if some more dirt from the substrate would come off 😭 For what was left at this point the large pot was too large. So I repotted it into a smaller pot and washed the substrate properly this time (used Canna Flush for that which really helped!) I put some cinnamon on the open spots but despite everyone saying it helps disinfect it just never does for me. Maybe I don’t have fungus in the air but bacteria 🤷🏻♀️ but yeah, the rhizomes not being sterile led to rot in a couple of days of course and the leaves all just died. So then I took them out, cut everything that was rotting off and bought some H2O2 and that seemed to work. Then I tried putting them into perlite as a transition but it started rotting again. Maybe because of the many roots there already were or because of the cinnamon. Maybe my cinnamon is contaminated -.- But also I realised that it’s a pain in the a~~ to keep it moist and I gave them another H2O2 bath and they look okay now. It’s just rhizomes left and I hope to be able to grow new shoots out of them. I will just keep them in water, changing it every few days and monitoring them closely.
What I’m still wondering about are the remaining roots. It’s now rhizomes with roots and I gently remove the mushy stuff they are still discarding. That includes slimy outer root layers that just come off. Then I’m left with very fine white strings which I guess are the core of the roots but I don’t know if those even still absorb anything. They are very sturdy though. I can hang the rhizome from one of them and barely feel any pulling. Maybe the plant will get rid of them, maybe it won’t. But oof, that was a ride.
An update, in case anyone read this 😂
I had one rhizome left in the end and kept it in water, changing it every few days and there are still no roots but a tiny green thingy growing! 🥰
Thanks for sharing. This was very informative and helpful. Also, you made leca sound very easy. I remember when I wanted to get into it and I watched a few videos that mentioned checking PH and the fertilizing process, I gave up very fast.

Is that shefflera in leca? I tried to transfer a small one-i pot out in water and the roots rotted and the stem never grew more. I thought maybe shefflera don’t transfer well but did you transfer that one? Oh wait- is that shefflera or a money tree?
Another thing you can do to prevent algae is to use a cover pot.

Yes Ive had a handful plants that were ready to be up potted and I decided to keep it in soil..and that was just because they were already growing extremely well in soil and I didn’t want to disturb them. Also I didn’t see them attracting fungus gnats lol so I wasn’t bothered. A few of them are now in self watering pots. So most likely I will not be converting all my plants
