    This is the video that saved me a ton of frustration. After initially watching another video that assigns the standard com port to CAT control, I immediately got the “rig control error” when i clicked the test button. More searching got me to this tutorial, and I was instantly successful once I assigned the enhanced com port to CAT. Thank you!
    There is a part of me that wonders how so many people had success setting this set up successfully with the standard com port assigned to CAT control on the 891.

    So one of the reasons to watch the video a few times and make notes and save it for future reference........you won't take two month to figure out why you can't get your same rig to work. In my case, I was missing a cable. A Critical cable!!!!! The CAT CABLE. A big TY to Julian.

    Old video but still helpful - Julian the Great! I had no TX audio on my 891 when testing JS8Call. I found this old video and learned that my data out level was set to just "10". Changed it to "50" and it worked. Everything else was set properly and I was going crazy here for moment. Setting my Data out level higher fixed the problem. I back on 10 meters this week and want to see how propagation is behaving.

    Thank you Julian. This video was very helpful in successfully setting up my 891 with a Signalink for FT8. In first few attempts I was able to have QSOs with stations from 15 miles from from my location to over 7,400 miles to New Zealand, with only 20 watts. This was from just north of Austin, Texas. Antenna is EFHW in inverted L configuration. First time ever utilizing digital mode on FT891. Appreciate all your videos. Keep them coming. Am subscribed. Best to you.

    Hi Julian! I just got the FT-891 (partly thanks to your reviews of it!). Interestingly, things didn't quite seem to work right until I set the OTHER DISP to 1500, along with the OTHER SHIFT set to 1500. I was then able to see a nice, solid 3k passband for FT8 work. That, of course, after I saw the part of your video where you adjust the filter width. Hehe. Anyway, an interesting note. I'm doing more research on what all of these options mean (what the heck is DAKY?!), but thanks for helping get me started. 73, Rex KE6MT

      From the 'FT-891 Advanced Manual':
      06-07 AM PTT SELECT
      -------------------
      Function: Sets the PTT control for the AM transmit signal. Available Values: DAKY/RTS/DTR
      Default: DAKY
      Description: Selects the PTT control method for the AM transmit.
      DAKY: Controls the AM transmit signal from the RTTY/DATA jack (pin 3) on the rear panel.
      DTR: Controls the AM transmit signal from the USB virtual COM/DTR ports.
      RTS: Controls the AM transmit signal from the USB virtual COM/RTS ports.

    • @PaulaBean
      @PaulaBean 2 роки тому +1

      @@OH8STN Rex asked what 'DAKY' means. I pasted the text from the advanced manual which explains what it does. I think DAKY is an abbreviation of 'DATA KEYING', i.e. 'Push-to-talk keying via the data jack'. I think that when you set the 'AM PTT SELECT' to 'DAKY', you enable the option to be able to switch the 891 to transmit via the DATA jack.

    Hi Julian - At 5:45 you mention a cable that plugs into the DATA/RTTY port, then plugs into a USB port in the computer. However, I have the cable that plugs into the DATA/RTTY port on the rig, but ends in open wires. I had assumed that it would be going to the sound card. I guess that I could splice in a USB plug, If I knew which wires went where into the USB.

    Julian, I have found an alternate method to having to move the SFT key to max. Instead, go to OTHER DISP 1500, OTHER SHIFT 1500, DATA LCUT FREQ OFF, DATA HCUT OFF, DATA PTT DAKY, go to main screen and adjust WDH to Max 3000, don't touch SFT! This will give you max receive on the center freq. I have these settings and they seem to work fine.

      I finally got back to my radio this weekend and was able to run through this. Worked flawlessly. Thank you so much for doing that. Thinking the RTS setting was the problem child for me like it was for you.
      For what it's worth, for the "other shift" setting I got some advice elsewhere to set that to 1500Hz, given where WSJT-X puts the center point for decoding relative to the tuned frequency. When I set the width to 3000Hz (the max width) I get a big dump of decodes so it seems to make sense that those two complement each other for the broadest range. All that said, I'm still relatively new to all of this so I may be totally making that up. :-D
      Thank you again!

    I just have the data mode to others en then adjust the wdh from 500Hz to as wide as possible. I would advice not to use the shift. When selecting the frequency in ssb mode then switching to data the frequency changes just but it back i.e. to 7.078MHz in data. I love the yaesu scu-17 interface because it only needs 5V from the usb to operate. I t has the same driver as the cat from the ft-891 uses and even works on linux.

    Thanks for the informative video. I see You’re using the G90 now. Do you still suggest the 891 as a mobile rig. It will 99% in my car but will mount in a way that I can remove it quickly if needing to abandon my car. Also mostly use the radio HF / JS8 (in areas where I can’t reach voice propagation ) going off-road / ovelanding 3-6 days long in areas where there’s no service whatsoever. So, primarily be used as a backup radio to call help and play w it to find out how reliable it is in areas w no cell service.. I have in-reach satellite as primary.
    Thanks for putting this together and I appreciate your time. Mike

      Definitely still using my ft-891. It's a magnificent radio with an excellent receiver. The only thing it's missing is an internal sound card but everything else is so awesome about the radio, I think it's still might go to Radio for preparedness. It's only slightly larger than the FT818, but you get 100 Watts, dsp, and variable bandwidth filters. You can't go wrong for the price.

  • @EricDBrownYT

    Good stuff as always.
    Help me understand the shift of 1000Hz. I've not seen / read that anywhere else when looking at WSJT-X settings. I leave mine at zero and am able to decode everything fine. What am I missing?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  5 років тому

      There's a couple of different reasons you'd want to use the shift. Usually I use the shift and the bandwidth adjustment together. So for example you're getting qrm for man rtty contester. His signal is too wide to notch, so you could reduce your bandwidth to something like 1,000 hurts instead of the normal 3000 Hertz then use the shift to move your bandpass away from the qrm. Does that make sense?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  5 років тому +2

      These days I leave the shift at 0, but have the offset at 1500hz. This is assuming I'm displaying the entire 3000 Hertz band pass. If I want to filter out or focus on a specific signal I would narrow the bandpass, and use the shift to adjust to the center of the signal I want.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  Рік тому

      Perhaps that shift is not necessary. It was a legacy setting from the old Yaesu user manual for operating psk and rtty.

  • @user-xj8oh6fo2f
    @user-xj8oh6fo2f 5 років тому +3

    From my experience I’ve come to
    Cw freq display FREQ
    Data mode OTHERS
    Other disp 1500
    Other shift 1500
    Data lcut freq OFF
    Data hcut freq OFF
    And from main screen set WDH to maximum 3000, don't touch SFT.
    Doing so we have maximum width filter starting at our dial frequency (=tuned freq) centered at dial freq+1500.
    I didn’t find any detailed explanation of those Shift and Disp did it mostly experimentally.
    But they look like: Filter center=tuned freq+Shift and Dial freq=Filter center - Disp
    Sure everything Inside 891 is much more complex since it's triple conversion radio + DSP. My explanation above is as if we are dealing with classic single conversion SSB receiver.

      @OH8STN  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Andre. I've arrived at very similar settings now. The bandwidth and the shift functions in the front panel of the radio work together. You can narrow the bandwidth with the bandwidth setting on the front panel and then moved the shift for the signal you want to focus on. This will bring a signal that is almost inaudible, up to Reliable and perfectly readable level. Thanks for sharing these settings I always look forward to your comments.

    As always, many thanks for all you do clearing up these mysteries. Question... does the FT-891 have a way of "storing" multiple configurations? I'm just thinking of my IC-7300 and how slick it is to go back/forth between settings for SSB vs settings for digital modes. Does such a function exist for the FT-891 or do all of these settings have to be 'un-tweaked' if you want to switch over to SSB?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 роки тому

      Settings on the ft-891 are brutally inadequate. There is an upside however. If your rig is in digital mode, the 891 will use the relevant digital mode settings, like audio input, bandwidth, Center frequency, and so on. When you switch over to SSB mode, it will switch those things automatically for settings more related to The Wider bandwidth of voice Communications. I really wish there were profiles for setting up the radio the way we like. The only way to do it on the ft-891 is setting up specific memories with the settings you like. Do that one for each band, then recall the setting to have your radio set up the way you like it. It's not the best way, but that's the way I've found Works nicely. The 7300 user interface is light years ahead of the 891.

      @@OH8STN Thanks for the quick reply, Julian! I'm "shopping" (aka dreaming and $aving) for a 100w "portable" hf rig. The FT-891 is obviously a contender. Believe it or not, I'm also looking at the IC-7100. *Not sure the form factor is ideal with its permo-2-piece layout. On the other hand, it has built in sound card, and can serve as a base vhf/uhf rig when not in the field. As you've already noted, pity the FT-891 doesn't have built-in sound card, but...we play the cards we're dealt.

      Don't waste your money on all that stuff. Buy a Digirig. The 891 uses a USB cable for cat control. For data use the Digirig. You'll have two usb cables, without any complicated mess. Normally we'll use the digirig for audio and cat. Since the 891 Has its own usb port for cat control, We only use half of the digirig, along with the 891 usb port for cat.
      It sounds complicated but it's a very simple way to do it.

    Hello Julian, you may have missed my reply to your comment below, so wondered if you can help please ? I attached a Ferrite Bead to the end of the USB cable (the PC end) and it seems to have worked, the TX continues for as long as needed now and does not cut out (I guess the source of the RFI is still there but at least I have a workround.
    One other issue I am having with this setup, when I transmit on frequencies between 600Hz and around 1600Hz, full power (set to 25W) is achieved. When replying to CQ call on frequencies from around 1800Hz and up, my power drops to around 1-2 watts. Can you suggest what settings need to be changed or suggest what the problem may be ? My "Other Shift" setting on the radio is set to 1000Hz and "Width" setting to 800HZ. Thanks

      You're absolutely right Martin. I didn't get the notification to the reply. Hate this sounds like exactly the same problem. I would suggest adding more ferrite beads if possible. The perfect solution would be using the shortest cables possible, in addition to ferrite beads. You can also root your coaxial cable away from any of audio or CAT co trol cables.

    Question. I have been running about 50 watts on ft8 and after about 15 min, the radio goes to zero or 10 watts when xmit. Why? Is 50 too much for the 891 in digital? Or is it something else? • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  4 роки тому +1

      This is a huge red flag Andrew. There's a variety of things which could cause this. Your SWR is too high, you're over driving the radio (checked with ALC meter while txing). It could be poor coax cable, bad station grounding, or poor ventilation (put 891 fan on contest setting). It could also be a combination of these things. What we are sure about is the ft-891 is folding back its output power, because something is wrong. It's protecting itself from damaged by reducing the output power. This is by design.

    Hi Julian, Have you heard of and/or experienced the "CAT clicking" problem that's been reported with the FT-891? I'm thinking about buying a used one but I can't find out if that problem was a settings fix or a hardware problem that I'd need a warranty to repair. I'm really interested in running this with digital modes and if it has "issues" in some models I'd pay an extra $100 for the full 3 year warranty.
    If you've experienced that problem and overcome it with a radio setting could you please respond to this comment?
    Thanks and I really like your ham radio videos.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  5 років тому +4

      You know I'm just sitting here working on an ft-891 video. That clicking was in the first generation of the ft-891. In the more recent versions, there isn't that problem. It seems that Yaesu has quietly fixed it, without letting anyone know there was an initial problem. So 90% of the communications I do with the 891 are digital Communications. Winlink, js8, ... there's a website or possibly a group on Facebook that identified which of the 891 series, had the problem by its serial number. I'll need to find it, but I will include that in my video.

    Hello Julian, this is an excellent video which I followed to the letter and managed to set up my FT-891 with WSJT-X connected to my Laptop using a SignaLink interface. I have a problem though which I'm hoping you can help me with. After about 5-10 transmissions, the CAT control seems to get lost and the radio does not transmit any power. If I unplug the USB plug from the Laptop (the one connected to the radio) then re-connect it, the CAT control is re-established. The number of transmissions varies before this happens. I have tried altering the Power (15 watts and 30 watts) and it happens on both. Do you have any thoughts on what could be causing this ? It's rather annoying, especially if I am in the middle of a QSO ! Thanks. Martin

      Sounds like RFI.
      Try a shorter USB cable. In fact try to reduce the length of all of your cables, as much as possible. This is just fixing the symptoms though. Trying to figure out if you're getting current in your coax, from your antenna.
      Thanks for the question and the comment, it's very much appreciated

      @@OH8STN Thanks Julian, I attached a Ferrite Bead to the end of the USB cable (the PC end) and it seems to have worked, the TX continues for as long as needed now and does not cut out (I guess the source of the RFI is still there but at least I have a workround. Thanks

    Do you have also the well known ticking noise by using cat control? And the terrible headphone hiss?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  2 роки тому +1

      The ticking noise was only found on some early models. I never had any headphone hiss or even heard of that.

      @@OH8STN thanks for you fast reply. The hiss in the headphone seems to be found on the early and latest models. 73' PD5RVL Roy.

      You're welcome. Perhaps, but never had either problem with mine.

    ....now I know why I don't do ft8...looks overly complicated just to get a 5&9 report and goodbye.

      FT8 is boring. It's not even possible to have a discussion. Just s contest mode.

    Hello Buddy,
    in 40 days we are in Saplunara on the Croatian Mljet island. What about You? :-)

      Hello Bk. I'm still thinking about Croatia but later in the year. Are you taking your boat this time?

    • @boboo1054

      One of the main reason why we go to Croatia (Adria Sea) is our boat :-)
      First time in Cro (2014) we were without the boat. After that we said us: either we buy us a boat, or we don't need to go there.
      Another quality of "beaching" ;-) without the hundreds of people around You on the normal beach. You can reach places/small beaches, where no one will come on foot.
      Having the cooling box onboard with all drinks You need a day ;-), You go out in the early morning, coming back at the sunset. Every pub or restaurant on the shore has the possibility to bind the boat and offers such tasty food (our bests: grilled fish and steaks with truffles).
      Jul, don't hesitate - take You bike and come on :-)

    I may be new to ham radio but FT8 seems pretty useless. You don't convey any information. Win link shows promise but digital modes that simply prove that radios can make contact while watching bars fill on a screen. It's like watching paint dry.

      I'm not a big fan of FT8, but many other operators are. Therefore I make videos and tutorials to help get those interested, started. It's also a good mood to test whether or not our antenna systems, are performing as expected.
