I'v had a mevo for over a year and I LOVE it! Some of his nit picks are just him. I didn't even realize there was a 'scope' on the unit. I plop it down behind my ball and don't worry about alignment and it is fine. Also I do not stress over the distance and it picks up fine also. Assuming if you were WAY off it might give you trouble, but I haven't measured anything and it works fine. Also, regarding the dots on the ball and the range, that is just silly. Honestly it picks up the spin without the dots almost the same. I am sure it is off some, but the spin #'s are not critical to me. It is mostly about ball speed, launch angle, and carry. When you hit it and it registers more spin, you hit it with more spin. Biggest thing is the carry distance is accurate. I use it to practice indoors and keep my swing in shape and work on things. On range it is great to work on dialing in your distances. So not worried about exact RPM. Less is bad, more is good. It is great with the driver as you can never really tell how well you hit it. You smash one 240 vs 260 and it tells you. Looking at the ball on the range you wouldn't be able to tell how much difference it really was, so that is SUPER useful to tweak swing adjustments. Overall it is awesome. I would thing they could give you the overall distance? I mean it is just a calculation on higher end systems anyway? They just calc ball speed, launch angle, and spin, and then add the roll out onto the carry. So they should be able to do the math for you. So that is a little frustrating, but I am guessing they don't want to give that data as it would almost be the same as the $10K system them. Anyway, it is great.

Matthew Kohut How does it do on half and three-quarter shots would you have to change the club setting to get an appropriate distance that is something I would want to get this for indoor practice of half and three-quarter shots

I've found Mevo gives fairly comparable results without the stickers on the range compared to when I hit in my garage with the stickers. I've come to realize over dozens of indoor/outdoor sessions that Mevo underestimates indoors SS/BS and distance compared to outdoors, so I just adjust in my head what I've found the difference in speed to be. I think it may have something to do with the lighting in my garage, which is explained in the instructions. Bottom line: it's a $500 unit that gives you decent data you can use. I'm using mine on off days, days it's single digits outside and to keep my golf fitness and work on my swing speed over the winter vs take 4 months off as I've done my whole life. If you need exact down to the mm distance and spin rate down to 1 rev, go mortgage your house and get a trackman. Complaining about the ball sight? The laser pointer works well, or just bring a tape measure to help you line it up straight. I keep a measure in my bag to measure 6 ft anyways. It's not that hard guys.
    Randy, always enjoy your content!

I have one. You’ve pretty much nailed it on the pro’s and cons. I don’t dot up my range balls for obvious reasons, and for me that’s the biggest drawback for accurate data capture. So, really it’s ideally suited for indoor data capture. Now! You’ve missed a really cool feature out. The device syncs to your iPhone or iPad and takes video such that only the actual swing is captured on video and not all the waggling and shuffling that goes between shots. The cool thing is that you see the shot and the numbers side by side on playback which is pretty awesome. I would think that for course vloggers it would be a really cool thing to to cut down on editing. Sorry for the uber long post! Keep up the great work, Randy :)

Would it be possible to get a silver colored marker or paint and just put a small dot onto the range ball with that instead of the stickers? If so that would make it possible to use on the range too.

Great review. Thanks. Been using the Mevo at the range for a few months now and while spin numbers aren’t accurate, carry distance appears to be. So for me at least that’s pretty much what I need when working on shots at the range. Also, I understand that flightscope is working on a software upgrade that will allow you to use a metallic marker instead of the stickers. That could work well at the range.

We are using it with silver markers. We learned that the markers have to dry before we hit the ball. I can only say what we are doing and it's working for us. We do make the make a little larger. A couple of guys at the club are using them. I'm trying to hold out for the Swing Caddie SC200.

The Big Lebowski more like The Little Mevoski.
Seriously though, I have used a couple of lower priced launch monitors Ernest Sports ES200 and Voice Caddie SC 200 and the one issue I encountered with both on the range is that if I was hitting irons/wedges off grass i had to reposition the monitors to get them back into their “sweet spot” as my divots forced me to do so. Hitting off a mat/turf would be ideal for these launch monitors but that has its drawbacks as well. My point is...send me that GC Quad yo WHOOP WHOOP!

I have the SC200 and you do not need to dot each ball with it but it will not give a spin rate only carry or total distance and swing speed ball speed and smash factor. You also have to select the club you use but setup is much easier. They both seem to look like great units for the consumer. I will need to do some more comparison on the accuracy against my clubs that I have the Arccos on which is a fantastic system.

I should add that I was most interested in carry data especially working with a net so I could work on half shots and partial wedges. Great video and very close data. I guess the price of putting on dots make it a great buy for us amateur golfers.

Great review. Agree with your assessments of the weakness. Plus at the ranges in my area you can't get 6 feet back. My big complaint with this system, and the others in this price range is that other than carry distance and ball height, I want to know my club face angle at impact, club path angle, and if possible launch angle. Which is why I rent an instrumented bay regularly.

Wow! Really nice job on the presentation of technical data. I think you are correct though that it really does not enable someone looking for data on their swings to a make use of its capabilities. No one is going to a public range and dotting their golf balls. Perfect if you have a setup in the garage or open access to an inside net. Too bad as it is a totally cool piece of hardware. I'll keep fishing or paying my 30mins at a time on a launch monitor at my range. :/

It's really awesome that a company is trying to make a launch monitor for a good price. Hopefully, they will expand on this and start making changes to make it easier. I would still choose SkyTrak even tho it's $1,500 more than FlyScope. A couple of reasons why no dots on balls (lol), you don't have to choose the club, line the system up and you can play simulator golf with it. Love the review and please keep them coming!

I have a mevo also and it one awesome tool. Just a FYI I think that site was more intended for the baseball feature and not golf. I also compared it to a pricey lm when I got it I used a trackman and got the same results as you. One last thing you don’t need to use those stickers for spin use a metallic sharpie works just as well. Hope this helps.

The only issue I have with it is using it with my 4G iPad which for some reason makes me login every single time going through the Facebook..you have already authorized this application, loop. My iPhone, no problem. I don't see a tremendous different with or without dot for most data through I have dots on all the balls in the indoor practice setup. I was tried using it by putting dots on my foam callaway practice balls and it doesn't register those. Otherwise, love it.

You should compare Swing Caddie Voice Caddie. It is less expensive and doesn't capture spin but I find ball speed to be really accurate and generally carry distance too.

    • @guam58
      @guam58 5 років тому

Swing Caddie is accurate up to about a 6 iron. Driver data is about 20 to 30% off. The higher the club head speed the swing caddie does not capture this very well. The algorithm and/or sensor is calculating or capturing correctly.

The mevo looked a bit off on the driver but not enough to be a huge problem. Also seemed a bit more prone to a misread, which seemed to generally skew the numbers a little bit long/low spinning, but those are for averages. Shot to shot, when it didn't misread, seemed quite accurate. And I'd MUCH rather work in a misread or two into my data interpretation than spend the price of a car on the QUAD.
I'd be really curious to see two quads read the same shots in a set of data to see how close they are as well. Cuz I have a feeling even top line monitors are gonna be up to 5 yards and 500 revs of spin off even on the same shot, and if so, then they're not ANY better than the mevo.

The launch angle inconsistencies on the driver (especially outdoors where harder to get level) are in line with other testing done. Is there a way to make sure indoors the floor is completely flat or mevo level (a bubble calibrator perhaps).Fyi the mevo algorithm is using flightscope algorithm which is a little 'hot' on mid irons against the GC2, hence why the carry number on 7i was out (as 3 determinant paramenter of BS, launch and spin are pretty much bang on)

Super practical for me, I'm a high handicapper and as I get better my carry with different clubs changes quite often so it's nice to have for that ... I also don't have the space, or want, of an indoor simulator when I get free range balls 2 mins from my house. Realistically, in my game, carry distance is what I want to see now as my game improves, but along the way some of the other numbers will also help ... as a slicer I know my face is open and likely my club path isn't perfect ... I don't need all of the other fancy numbers for $14k more ... I paid a guy $80 to show me and tell me that info, which any slow motion video would show ... so for me ... practical ... for everyone, probably not

I bought the Mevo, and so far have been pretty happy with it. I just wished it would pick up more of my shots. It seems like when I hit it pure it decides not to read the shot, and when I blade it or hit it just awful it reads it every time just to spite me. I swear I hear it laughing at me sometimes.

just noticed that the mevo doesn't have any sidespin/ spin axis measurement. This is honestly one of the most important statistics when playing indoors, obviously outdoors you can just look to see what the ball is doing. For the money seems like a nice device, but if you can afford to I would go with the skytrak

just to add to this, I also just read the mevo's FAQ and it looks like most of the readings are calculations, not measurements. Basically it's making an educated guess based on what it knows, which is ball speed and the approximate loft of the golf club to give you close to accurate results.

Great review. It looks like the Mevo is a step in the right direction. If they can solve the dot and alignment issues, I might pick one up. Well done as always!

Sounds perfect for a home, indoor setup, but no, I’m not putting dots on range balls. So it’s cool, it’s getting close, but I want something I can use at the driving range. Maybe the Mevo 2 for $799? Just a suggestion.

Probably my favorite hardboiled episode yet, along with the golf ball fishing apparatus episode, freaking hilarious! Been interested in launch monitors for awhile but I'm a dad, I love whisky and PLAYING golf too much to even consider to cost. Always enjoy the content broseph🤘
