Shanghai introduces ultraviolet light to disinfect public buses

A public transport company in Shanghai has deployed ultraviolet (UV) light units to disinfect public buses using less time and manpower. Officials from China’s National Health Commission point out that the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 is sensitive to ultraviolet light and heat. The World Health Organisation, however, cautions the general public about the use of UV lamps for directly sterilising hands or other areas of skin.

Wow, I guess one benefit of this pandemic is that we're seeing a lot more investment into keeping places clean. Cleaner buses, planes, etc.
I only hope we keep it up after we've gotten through this and governments don't all of a sudden think it's "too expensive" or "time-consuming."

@@campkira You don't use black light (UV-A) for disinfecting, you use UV-C which is the best wavelength for killing viruses and it's the most dangerous.

cleaning is done without anyone in the bus. auto pilots transportations had been used quite a while. no drivers.

Those are UVC lamps, very dangerous if you expose yourself to them without protective clothing, especially without an eye cover. It's the equivalence of welding without a shield, but with multiple lamps.
There will be a strong ozone smell and burning flesh if your skin is exposed.

when you sunbathe, you surely do not emit UV radiation towards your friends afterwards......
you can be affected by UV if directly exposed to it, however as Ai implied, the particles affected by UV in the bus won't radiate those rays back towards humans afterwards ; as some guy said down below a comment, "UV light doesn't emit from objects radiated by UV"
That is a great idea, much more environmentally friendly! We use ultraviolet light to disinfect water when we go camping.

@@linnen_elm it works, uvc lamps are many times stronger than what we experience from the sun. The reason your [lake] water wasn't sanitized is because have an atmosphere that protects us. if you moved a small lake to just above to the same level as the ISS, it would be sanitized in moments.
it would also freeze, protecting a pocket deep in the center, but that is neither here nor there.

I hope they still do the spray disinfection at least weekly. UV light won't reach all the crevices in the bus

@@TESkyrimizer Food crumbs, dust, & tucked away tissues reside in seat crevices. Dirt shields viruses from UV. Movement from people getting off and sitting down mobilizes dirt & viruses that cling. Faces may not touch bus crevices, but hands may.
Problem with uv light, it cannot reach area that can not be reached by the light. We used this in hospitals but there are some objects that can block the light thus resulting to uv ray not passing thru that area.
while it is not exactly true that UV rays are absorbed just like visible light rays are, yes UV light cannot go far through matter like X rays do

@@jaxlone997 i think it should be less than 99.9%. In my experience before patient that has been confined in one specific room keep on ending up with a pneumonia regardless of the admitting diagnosis. We already used the UV light a lot of time but they are still getting it. We suspected it was the aircon but we have no proof so what we did was not admit patient to that room after and it works. Anyway we are in a health crisis anything would help will do.
Uv light has been in use for may decades in Healthcare setting. but this is an eye opener for mass transport.
UV robot disinfector would be better.

There are studies on this going back to 2005, but as is nearly all ways the case things like onboard wifi and lawsuits over advertising have higher priority with .gov transit authorities

Cleaning is not quite the same as disinfecting. Buses are usually cleaned before being disinfected.

The damage UV-C causes is immediate, but the severity is dependent on how long you are exposed to it.
Short durations in a few seconds: you will start smelling ozone and burning flesh smells.
Longer durations: your skin will get inflamed, your eyes will be severely damaged. Later on you will get sunburn and skin peeling etc.
It's bad for people like bus cleaners if they are exposed to the UV light. But as anyone can see the operation is carried out in the absence of all personnels and passengers. Hence there is no health risk. UV light doesn't emit from objects radiated by UV. It's not like radioactive emissions from radioactive contaminated objects guys. Come on, go through some physics text books.

This is evidence as to why there are less viruses during the warm months, and why so many older northerners move south in the winter. Viruses are also sensitive to the humidity.

UV rays can disintegrate plastic even faster and can cost more in the long run although it saves labour cost and labour time in the short run. UV rays may not reach certain places where a human cleaner can reach. If the cleaner is well trained and responsible, a human touch will be more reliable.

Well illustrated. I see many comments completely forgot that UV light is an energy. It doesn't contaminate like radioactive emissions.... Those guys seem to have forgotten that many water treatment plants use UV light to cleanse it of water born pathogens instead of being completely dependent on chlorine. Some people are more affiliated to politics than usual and ordinary science. They seem to live for politics and forget that politics is just a tool for social order and unity.
