  • Airplanes are as much a form of transportation for germs as they are for us. That's where the GermFalcon from Dimer UVC Innovations comes in. The GermFalcon uses ultraviolet light to kill disease-causing germs on airplanes. Virus-killing UVC machines are also being deployed in hospitals and airplane terminals to keep these high-traffic locations as safe and sanitary as possible.

I'm in pest control and so much of what is being promoted is what we have been trying to coach people for years. I've got a whole list of steps. 1st, and frustrating for me is "sanitizing" let's teach deep cleaning first. To sanitize over filth isn't what they are trying to promote, but I see daily.

PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE..DANGER. JUST REMEMBER if you try this at home UV can damage your eyes so don't try it at home unless you really know what you are doing. Use the light for 5 minutes and the next day you will be going to the doctor as you will feel you have sand in your eyes and won't be able to open them due to the damage done. Also, different UV means different results so you may get a false sense of hygiene when maybe the item is still dangerous

@cisa93 actually UV does create heat that's why it burns your skin and causes cancer. From what I've seen it needs 10 min but this can vary. Also, UV V produces Ozone which can be toxic but, having Ozone reduces the time. No, I'm not an expert this is just what I got from watching some of the experts talking.

An extremely important factor the needs discussing is viral loads. There is some research and anecdotal evidence that correlates disease outcomes with initial viral loads. A lower viral load takes longer to build to critical levels thus providing important time for the body to detect and mount an effective defense. UV disinfection, especially automated and continuous, should contribute to lowering ambient viral levels. Hospitals can present continuous exposure especially in hard to manage situations like admissions and over crowding. Bravo to your efforts!

For those of you freaking out about the operator of the device disinfecting the airplane not wearing eye protection. In regards to the device being used, the glass window directly in front of the operator is not plain glass but “UV-C Safe Glass” which is specifically manufactured to block UV-C bandwidth energy and verified using a radiometer tuned to the 253.7-nm germicidal C-band wavelength. That being said... before you run out and buy a UV light off ebay for use in your home... be aware the light from UV-C germicidal lamps can be dangerous and should be taken seriously. UV-C lights developed for killing viruses etc are more powerful than the UV lights found in your average tanning bed or in your neighborhood nail salon used for curing nail polish. Direct exposure to UV-C radiation is hazardous and can be particularly damaging to the skin and eyes. Ocular damage consists of inflammation of the eye with discomfort, sometimes severe, appearing within 6-12 hours after exposure but usually resolving within 24-48 hours. Extended exposure can lead to scarring of the cornea and or vision loss. Skin damage from excess exposure is similar to sunburn. Acute overexposure to UV-C band radiation is incapacitating, similar to a severe sunburn. Proper use in the home should involve leaving the room and turning the light on remotely... leaving it on for an extended period... and turning it off before reentering the room.

Although UVC is widely used for disinfection (whether of wastewater, air, or solid surfaces), I see some issues in the machine used inside the airplane. Dose received by the viruses is the key factor, and it depends on received irradiation (watts per surface unit) and time. Irradiation decreases exponentially with distance from source, so the energy received at, for instance, the seats, is way lower than that received by the top of the headrests. Given the complex shapes found on the airplane, it's difficult to apply an even amount of irradiation, and that's without evaluating different porosity of surfaces. A better example would be the machine used for disinfecting the surface of the stretcher/operations table.
Regarding some comments about how virus don't contain DNA, only RNA, UVC acts on the bases, forming dimers, so it works the same way.
Anyway, if well used, UVC is an extraordinary tool.

@Golden Runway Hi, unfortunately I don't know about that kind of units, as my field of knowledge is surface treatment with UVC, but not for disinfection purposes. For that kind of surfaces, I use a solution of domestic bleach (suitable for food disinfection) in water. If you have 50-40 g/l bleach (standard commercial bleach), dilute 30 ml per litre of water. Wipe the surface and let it dry. If you think that it can be transferred to your clothes, you can wipe again the surface only with water after some time.

I am currently setting up such a system in my home. Maybe you should put UV-C tubes on a drone, that way, you can disinfect hard- to- reach places. Like high altitude places (buildings or maybe even balcony’s) that may be contaminated. Also, a basic RC car plus a UVC light tube might help places where robots are less accessible. Nice work though!

Please remember that UVC is the germicidal UV and you may have noticed most machines were robotic or gave operator protection from direct UVC. This is because, at the high level required for the sterilization effect to occur:- "Acute (short-term) effects include redness or ulceration of the skin. At high levels of exposure, these burns can be serious. For chronic (long-term) exposures, there is also a cumulative risk, which depends on the amount of exposure during your lifetime." Lower rates do not kill viruses so I hope that explains why you should not self medicate with UVC because treatment levels cause big problems.

@@John-zv1hy , so, at least in theory, depending on the time of exposure to uv, *this could induce a mutation that could make it: a) more virulent or b) resistant to uv-light
      no?
The same video makes the point that the virus has had no need to 'evolve' defenses for UV-C light. Exposing it to this would give such evolutionary pressure so that, evenutally, we might end up with a virus that is resistant to such treatments.
By artificial selection. Through a process of elimination, only those viruses able to survive uv would be left standing, so to speak.
