  • Today we took a day trip out to the Blue Mountains which is about a 2 hour train ride from Sydney.
We started in Katoomba and saw the Three Sisters at Echo Point lookout which is just a short walk from where the buses drop off.
We hiked the Prince Henry Cliff Walk starting from Echo Point via Leura Cascades. From the trail, there are numerous lookout points, each offering stunning views of the valley.
We finished with a delicious and well deserved lunch at the Bakehouse on Wentworth before catching the train from Leura back to Sydney.

A couple of hints about the train to any who want to make the same sort of journey. The trains are one class and it's no dearer to travel on the upper deck. The views from upstairs are much better. Lots of views from both sides the train. We find it better to sit on the left side of the train in each direction. That way, on the journey to Katoomba and stations beyond, you can see a long distance south and south-west, much as it has been for millenia. On the return journey, you look nor-east and get great views of Mt Hay and the ridges leading to it.

If you go to Katoomba you should go to the cultural centre. They have amazing views and a great cafe as well as some great art exhibitions

As a child living in Sydney with grandparents in the Blue Mountains we hiked , picnicked and played all over the Blue Mountains. Got the car stuck in deep snow in Blackheath and only got out with the train. Hiked down Govetts leap and walk along the so called Grand Canyon. It’s a fabulous spot and cant wait to get back there after Covid. Well worth a visit or longer stay for sure.

    FYI - Leura isn't pronounced Lee-or-ah, it's Loo-rah!

Thanks for helping educate us. If you think we need help pronouncing locations in Australia, you should hear us now that we are in SE Asia! 😉

Its worth it if its predicted to snow. However, it only snows above Katoomba or leura generally. There is on average 1-2 snow days per year where it settles, but last year there was 3 or 4. Blackheath is the best town in upper mts for snow. Just make sure you take it easy driving if it does snow. So many Sydney drivers go up to check it out and aren't used to driving in icy conditions.

Thanks for watching! We really enjoyed our time in the Blue Mountains but I can only imagine how beautiful it would be there in the snow!!
