As the UK does not produce any toilet paper, a German toilet paper producer sent a shipment free of charge to the Queen before Brexit rules made imports difficult. Being above that kind of politics, he said, she should not be deprived of simple amenities.

"Gernot Hassknecht" (the angry red-faced little round man) is a stage name, "Gernot" is an old-fart pre-boomer first name and "Hassknecht" can be translated as "Hate-server".
It's a role, he is a charming man IRL.

The 100th like, yay! The old guy which is always screaming out of anger is one of the best characters in Heute Show. I assume the most funny episodes are not translated in English, but at least you got some taste of this show.

    Two "fun facts":
    - I once read that a french polititian named her cat "Brexit". Apperantly, when she was asked why, she said something like this: "Well, he always stands by the closed door and meows loudly to be let out. But when I open the door, he just stays there and doesn't go out."
    - In German, there is a new verb called "brexiten". It is used when someone gets up at a party or gathering for example, says they are going to leave but are still here an hour later and just can't get their foot out of the door for real.

    Founders of the EU.
France and Germany were founders but not the only ones.
Oldest treaty that is considered to be an EU treaty is the European Steel and Coal Community.
Founders were: France, West-Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy.
Algeria was also in as part of France.

While the UK was still Germany's third most important export market in 2016, the country has slipped to eighth place in 2022. The UK is the only major economy for which economists have predicted a recession this year. The country is doing worse than Russia, which has been hit with far-reaching sanctions because of its war of aggression on Ukraine. (Quote: "tagesschau")

    • @robakin1225

Guess you haven't been paying attention.German economy has stagnated(truth be told has been slowing for years, maybe from lack of innovation, didn't keep up with IT or other technologies)but they where able to hide it behind ECB pumping € euros into their banks,Dax etc and through their exploitation of poor eastern EU nations and also through Covid they hid it through limiting supply and reducing who(vaccine pass to shop was needed) and how much could be bought. And the Russian economy is doing good and even better under sanctions that hurt western nations and help push innovation in Russia and allies further, oh and made the rest of the world look for alternatives to western control, hence the growth of B.R.I.C.S (the real reason behind anti East rhetoric).

How wrong they were, just like those Spanish sun beds, the Germans got to a recession before the Brits. Nationalism is is still alive in Germany it's 2023 not the 1930s Germany, ah the mentality.

dont forget the retired brits whining about the new rules like paying a fee for a Visa, not being able to stay 6 month in a row in their holiday houses in spain, but most of these crybabies voted for brexit and now they say "nobody told us about this" .....
not sure when thinking for yourself got a very rare thing.

Wonderful to see you enjoying this great political comedy show! 😂
Pity about the posters to the left of the anchorman.
Their texts often contain nice quips and hilarious puns.
But explaining them in the subtitles would make for too much reading and slow the show down.
The EU originated from a European community for coal and steel (Montanunion, 1951) founded by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg.
It evolved to the EWG (European Economic Community) and further steps followed in the evolution towards the European Union we have today.
(Sorry, I only know the German terms and abbreviations.)

It was and still is a total disaster. As was predicted the UK economy tanked and is the only G7 nations that still hasn't recovered from pandemic yet. Manufacturing is leaving the island as it can't compete. It can't find any ships to catch the fish and fish and chips is getting hard to find. Logistics have collapsed.

    • @dnocturn84
      @dnocturn84 10 місяців тому +5

Because it never had to recover just from pandemic alone. Brexit itself was far more destructive to the UK, than the pandemic ever was. But don't tell this Brexiteers. It's their religion now and it's considered blasphemy to confront them with reality.

The "heute show" is named after the news broadcast of the same channel, "heute" - which means simply "today". And the German diphthong 'eu' sounds similar to 'oi' [ɔʏ̯] .
Gernot Hassknecht is a stage name. Hass = hate, Knecht = servant. Gernot is old Germanic meaning spear swinger and was the name of one of the kings of the Burgundians in the Nibelung saga.
The history of the EU goes back to the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman, born as a German in Luxembourg in 1886, whose proposal of an European Coal and Steel Community (a single common market for those goods) was accepted by German chancellor Adenauer. This plan targeted to get the coal and steel industry, which was before not only a main resource for armament, but also the cause of conflict, under common governance. The founding members besides West Germany and France were the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) and Italy. It was followed by the EEC, the European Economic Community, expanding the common market at nearly all other industries and establishing a nominal European Parliament, and then the European Union, adding a reformed political structure with actual competences for the Parliament and introducing freedom of movement not only for goods, but for all citizens of the European Union.

The ZDF is an independent television funded by compulsory fees. I don't know if that's a good thing.
There are a couple of very good TV stations with good shows. but a lot of scrap is also produced by them. unfortunately....

The public TV channels like ZDF, ARD, the socalled "Third Channels" (from a time when there only _were_ three channels on TV) and the French/German co-op channel ARTE (which specializes in European nature and geographical documentaries, international news, and ArtHouse movies) are financed by TV & radio taxes, yes, but that doesn't mean the German government controls them. It means they're not run by corporations and have the freedom to run their programs uninterrupted by commercials.
