  • Why is slapback delay so important to John Mayer tone? The use of the Way Huge Aqua Puss, and in some cases the MXR Carbon Cooy have been main stays for John Mayer for much of his career. In this video I discuss why I believe it’s the key to his tone and provide some clear examples of when he uses it.

Calling myself out. All John’s said about the Aqua Puss is in a Periscope where he called it “old trusty”. So that’s the only record we have of him saying anything about. Sorry everyone, I misspoke.

I’ve been putting off getting a delay forever and this video’s just convinced me it’s toooo necessary. Appreciate the info dude! 🔥

I appreciate that! This is all in my Fractal FM9 so just a digital emulation of it all, but an analog delay like an AP, Carbon Copy, or Boss DM2 is very useful for adding that dimension.

Hi jon would like to ask recommended setting for any delay pedal to do slapback!

I really like it set to 80-90ms. So very short with maybe 1 repeat, if not any. I realized there’s this “chirp” to the sound you get with a slapback at least in the vein of JM. In my opinion, you get this warmth from the delay and then the chirp which is kind of like a delayed transient. Idk how to really describe it. Which delay are you running?

@@JonKaneshiroGuitar after your explaination is to get that slapback delay which is the 'short' tap in 1 repeat rite?

Yeah the slapback is super short and almost not audible.

there are many clips on youtube also can heard the slapback delay, especially at the beginning of the song and he strum the guitar for kind of the sound check...

He’s copying Clapton’s sound AND style from the ‘80s and early ‘90s quite shamelessly. So there really isn’t a Mayer tone. You’re even playing Clapton’s “Pretending” as your opening track. So I’m not so much interested in Mayer’s settings and gear, but rather curious about Clapton’s 😜
That being said, any decent delay pedal will do the trick, especially in combination with a reverb.

Then I guess you missed the point of the video. John has used the Aqua Puss for a great deal of his career. And this is primarily a channel focused on JM tone. Obviously Clapton used some slapback delay back in the day as well, but doesn’t mean he’s copying his tone. The only reason why I used this clip was because of how you could hear how much slapback he had before the song started.
