Lian Li really knocked it out of the park with this case. It's future proof for any sort of build you're going for. I bought a galahad trinity II 360 AIO and 6 140mm infinity fans and 2 120mm infinity fans for the rear. All black. I'm debating installing the AIO as an intake from the side or as an exhaust at the top. The differences in temps is so little no matter the configuration witht his case so it really is down to whatever you find most aesthetically pleasing.
And, that's an incredible achievement by Lian Li.

What did you end up settling with? New build starts next week for me. I have the galahad lcd infinity and 6 140mm reverse infinity fans on their way and I'll be exhausting my gpu radiator (liquid suprim 4090 with the fans replaced by 2 120mm inifinitys) out the back.

What if I want to use it horizontal? The right-panel bottom and glass-panel top? It increases the stability, it can never be knocked and bump accidently. Also gives a great showcase from every side, left and right, front and back, not only one side.
Also why no one think to use cabling to go under the bottom of case? Maybe I want to use backside-down, frontside up? There are desks with cable holes and if case was giving out ports from bottom, you could have directly send cables to the cable management hole without worrying to touch your walls in the room and worry about bents and turn radius.
      Not future proof enough.

Love your analysis of all of the different configurations. It’s surprising that the temps of the push/pull configuration wouldn’t be better. They always try to sell “more fans more better” however it makes me very grateful that you do the testing you do because it becomes clear quickly that it is not always true. I also love that you keep in mind aesthetics. Even if things run a degree or two hotter it can be 100% worth it if it makes the case that much more pleasing to the eye. That is the point for most of us after all lol. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I have this case too and love it! I have side as intake bottom as intake and filled the two fans in back as intake . I have push pull on top and two fans in back. I used all 120mm fans and am cooling a 14700k. I have a mix of fans (tl120 lcd, al120 v1 and al120v2 and some 120 slims in the back. ) gpu is in horizontal position. My cpu idles at 30c and will go up to 65c-75c if gaming for a few hours.

These videos have been amazing and helped convince me that the O11D Evo XL is basically my dream case. Now that I bought one though I'd love if you could do this same video but with the case inverted!
I like to keep my PC on the left side of my desk (partially due to room layout, partially because my headset cord is on the left) so inverted is the best way for me to enjoy the aesthetics of the case. However, that also puts the GPU (if mounted horizontally or vertically) near the top of the case and could definitely change the optimal orientation for cooling.

It's great to see the AIO is actually better used as a side intake, it really compensates for the lack of front intake, making it so both the GPU and CPU get fresh outside air. Nice!

Vertical gpu mount for anti sag and good noise+thermals, side mount AIO intake for better CPU thermals is my choice based on performance, looks, and ease of use. Ideally aio tubes down running behind the vert GPU and maybe not an all-white build would look pretty clean I think.

Interesting. But then there is the hassle to add a filter for the rear intake fan(s). May I ask if you tested the AIO in intake, bottom intake, top & rear exhaust? If so, what are the differences in temp and noise vs your config? Thanks

    • @kcxrickygaming5262
      @kcxrickygaming5262 Рік тому

@@o.t.t.o.t.t.1834 We did not have a filter for rear fans during testing. We did test couple of the "classic" setups with side AIO push-pull intake (6x140), bottom intake (3x140), top (3x140) and rear exhaust (2x120). With any variation of this setup the second rear fan did not matter. It added more noise for marginal thermal benefit. It is an extra fan so it might add something aesthetic wise.
A larger factor was the side AIO placement (bracket) and the filter for it since placing closer to side panel will naturally want pull more air which means it will ramp up more and cause more noise. Since with push-pull one wants to have similar rpms with across 6 fans, the significant rpm jump will cause quite a lot more noise. Thermals were good but with a noise sacrifice. Placing the AIO further away (the default) will have a significant negative impact on thermals which will lead to more rpm with little thermal improvement. In this scenario the thermals were bad which requires some fan tuning due to fans ramping up with bad efficiency.
      Conclusion
Classic way with AIO closer to side panel will yield better cpu temps, same-ish gpu temps, worse mbo temps, with more noise, filter as a large factor
Classic way with AIO further away to side panel will result in worse cpu temps, same-ish gpu temps, same mbo temps as above, with less or more noise depending on tuning, filter not as large of a factor.
We stand by our testing with with AIO push-pull as exhaust and the rest as intake with the best results in temps and noise. For overclocking we recommend the classic way with AIO closer to side panel. This will result in a very significant noise delta compared to others but one will achieve the best clocks using this setup. For any other scenarios like undervolting and PBO, we recommend the AIO as exhaust and the rest as intake for the best thermals for noise. Hope this helped.

Curious what the results are like for a fully air cool build (cpu air cooling tower rather than AIO) and especially in inverted case config.
Just with how the fans and airflow get so weird with horizontal GPU, inverted mobo + CPU tower.
When inverted, a horizontal GPU draws air from the top. It is common to have one of the fans function as flow through blower as well, and that would blow air down to bottom.
Of course upright gpu mounting can eliminate that complication, but that comes at much greater additional cost.
Anyways, I think it's worth checking out.

This is a great configuration comparison video indeed!
I wish, however, you had tested configurations under air-cooling. As I noted in my comment to your review of this case, vertical GPU mounting is considered to have a greater impact on CPU temperature when an air-cooler is used. With AIO, GPU position doesn't really matter much as heat from a GPU does not give a significant adverse impact on neither a low-height CPU water block nor a radiator at a distance whereas, with air-cooling, GPU heat directly hits a CPU-cooler just above and significantly affecting CPU temperature. Notwithstanding Lian-li's focus on water cooling, this case is also great for air-cooling provided a GPU is mounted upright.
With regard to tested configurations, upright GPU mouting seems to be not necessary worse in terms of noise than horizontal mounting, for your table (18:01) shows that idle noise is 1 dB lower with upright GPU mounting although load noise is 1 dB higher. I think that idle noise matters more since your PC is at an idle or light load state longer, unless you are benchmarking your PC most of the time. Based on the result of your testing, I would rather say upright mounting is slightly better in terms of noise.
I am a bit perplexed that your rear fan configuration testing shows noise distribution is reversed between idle and load (3:21). Noise is greater without exhaust fans at idle but is less without them at laod.
With regard to the comparison between 120 mm and 140 mm fans, the result may be due to certain characteristics of these Lian-li fans and may not be generalized. This difference seems to be caused not by the difference in fan size but rather by the difference between these two Lian-li fans used.
Speaking of Lian-li fans, I hope you also use fans other than Lian-li's, for instance, Noctua fans, in addition in the future if you could. I suspect there are a considerable number of people who use Noctua, Arctic Cooling, Be Quiet, or any other fans of their choice instead of Lian-li fans even if they use this case. It is one of the unique advantages of O11D EVO XL as well as O11D EVO that they don't come with any pre-installed fans so that you can use whatever fans you prefer. Personally I would definitely use Noctua fans if I build a PC using this case now and Alpha Cool's upcoming Apex Steath Metal fans if I build it later when they become available.

Hi. Thanks for the video and all the different configurations - that must have been a lot of work!
When I first set up my Lian Li O11 Dynamic Evo XL I had 3 x 140's at the side and bottom as Intake, thje 360 AIO at the top as Exhaust as well as the 2 x 120's at the rear as Exhaust as well. And the GPU in the traditional horizontal position. So much as you have.
The only thing I didn't like was the huge ugly gap at the top of the Case by having the Motherboard in the low position.
So after a couple of months I lowered the Motherboard to the Centre position and removed on of the 120's. Overall I just think it looks more "ballanced" and I don't really miss the extra 120 at the rear of the Case. But I'm sure if Lian Li had done away with the top PCIE Bracket they could have made it so that even in the Centre position you could still have 2 x 120's.... There would be enough room. And I've never ever used the top PCIE Bracket, so I feel it's quite redundant.
    Thanks again. Ciao.

TLDR: You're rockin' it. Thank you and keep up the good work!
This is amazing sir. I have thoroughly appreciated your Lian Li o11 D, and XL analyses. (I never comment on videos, and am going out of my way to show my appreciation!!!) I stumbled upon your channel after doing over 50 hours of case-, case fan-, and radiator fan-based research this week. I then theorized optimal builds with the Phanteks nv7 and o11 D XL using hand-drawn fluid dynamic vector sketches for fun. I very quickly came to the conclusion that the upright GPU mount with 3 exhaust fans behind could potentially be the best configuration, and feel incredibly vindicated after watching your videos! -I have a request, if I may... Have you attempted mounting the rear fans as intake, blowing fresh cool air along the face of the AIO, and helping to redirect some of the 140mm bottom intakes toward the GPU?- edit: I should watch to the end. I was also (controversially) toying around (in rough draft paper format of course) with intaking the top fan closest to the GPU. I only need a 240 AIO with my 10700kf, and this could allow me to 'attack' the GPU with intakes from both sides. Falcon Northwest has a rear exhaust 120, and FE card exhaust right above their 80mm intake, similarly 'attacking' the GPU from both sides to maximize cooling, and having the exhaust/intake still nets lower temperatures.

With Strix in upright gpu bracket aren't you supposed to put two fans blowing to the GPU and one fan blowing out to the case from GPU due to the design of the card's exhaust itself and the vapor chamber. Also GPU position on upright bracket should also been considered due to the vapor chamber. Lian Li had pretty good list how the card should be oriented on the bracket.

There is a point of irony to point out with this case.. It is geared towards being for AIO users, but the way it is made makes it optimal for air-cooled setups with maximum through-flow. Not exactly what you'd think of when looking at "display your setup"-type cases, but for pure practicality or if you have a good looking air-cooler for the CPU, you can do bottom in, rear out, top out, with an upright GPU, and have such a good flow that the air of the GPU never graces the CPU as the air-cooler throws that out the back and rear-top while GPU air goes straight up to top fans.

I am using a board where the RAM sticks sit above and below the CPU (top left of the case) and apparently they do not get enough air, although I have 3 140 mm fans as intake on the side and the bottom (6 overall), 6 push/pull going out at the top and 2 120mm going out at the back. I have really low fan speeds set right now. One option is to increase fans speeds but perhaps it also a good option to reverse the back 120 mm fans? Did you check the temperatures when you did the reverse configuration of the rear fans?

Hey man, thank you so much for the great coverage on the O11 evo XL, your videos have been a tremendous help in my latest build in this case. I do have one question though and would be super glad if you could maybe answer it. So things are a bit complicated but I'll try to keep it short:
I originally had my system (threadripper eATX) in the old, original o11 but had to upgrade my GPU to a 4090 Strix to get some 3d renders done I couldn't fit in my 3080s VRAM. Something not fitting is kinda gonna be the motto for this whole story 😅 Not being able to now close the side panel anymore I ordered a custom cable mod right angle adapter (which points the cable downwards in the direction of its fans in a traditionally mounted system), which took over two months now and was also pretty expensive. After realizing it all still would not fit I decided to upgrade to the EVO XL. I am now facing a whole new problem though: With the 4090 in traditional horizontal mounted position I can't reach the second x16 pcie slot anymore which I need for my 4x4x4x4 NVME expansion card as Asus had the clever idea to make the strix 3.5 slots wide instead of 3. I have really racked my brain finding any viable solution but it's really tough. Initially I thought I might be able to sneak a riser cable underneath the GPU but even with the slimmest of slim ones I could find this would not fit I believe. (Lowest profile I could find on Aliexpress was 7mm extending over the PCIE slot and as far as I could measure it I have exactly 4.99mm between GPU and PCIE slot.
So my last hope would be upright mounting which does pose questions though. I only ever see build where people upright mount the GPU but don't populate any other PCIE slots, so the riser cable can go straight down. How is the situation if there is some other stuff mounted, in my case said 2 slot NVME expansion card and Blackmagic Decklink video card (rather small thing). Would the riser be long enough to run it over these components? Or is it possible to feed it out sidesways through the grommits to the right of the mainboard? Also would I be able to keep using my expensive 90 degree 12VHPWR cable? I really don't have a feeling for the amount of space around the GPUs power connector in this upright orientation (I would probably have to go with GPU IO on the bottom as it's the Strix variant which I heard really only should be installed IO facing down because of the way its vapor chamber is designed).
Would be awesome If you could give me any insight on that! And if you (or anyone else reading this comment) have any other ideas how this problem of blocked PCIE slots could be solved please let me know! Thanks again and cheers!

So the Side and Bottom fans would need to be reverse blade uni fans while the back and top are standard flow right?

Do you have an inverted build video? Would the fans basically be the same?

Suggestion: please compare the AIO tubes up vs tubes down efficiency when it is placed on the side. You may do it in any pc case. I would like to buy a 360mmn, it most be tubes up in my pc case, side intake and I don't down if there is any loss of efficiency and how much is it.

Intakes should have a dust filter, but on the rest you dont need if you have a positive preassure in the case(you put in more air mechanically than you pull out with fans). Then all non filtered holes in the case should push out air reducing dust.

This is a great video thank you for making this! I wanted to ask, do you have a good idea of how thermals in the Evo XL compare with the thermals in the original Evo? (with an aio, air cooled GPU, and maximum fan layout without mesh front).

What about top AIO and bottom fans set to intake, and back and side fans (behind upright-mounted GPU) set to exhaust? Can anyone comment on that.
Also, I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know if Gigabyte's 4090 Gaming OC fits in the upright mount with Arctic's 420 mm LFII mounted at the top of the case? Lian Li says on their website that the max thickness for an upright GPU with a top/bottom 420 AIO is 75mm, and Gigabyte's beefy boi is just about that...

I read somewhere that setting your AIO to intake was actually bad for the cpu temperature so I am kind of confused

Hey Christopher do u think GPU temp will be even better if u put AIO to EXHAUST on SIDE place? Thank you!
So bottom intake/top-exhaust/rear exhaust or intake not sure this/aio side exhaust.
Or Aio to exhaust on top but 3 side fans to exhaust too, i just want a best for gpu 😀

I got an Asus ROG 4090 Gaming OC and I don't know how to mount it... I was thinking about mounting it Upright, with the fans as exhaust. All of my fans are 120 though. Should I get 140s? What is the best up / down IO orientation for that card? I can't find it anywhere :(

Hi Chris, is the upright GPU mounting kit (Lian Li O11DE-2X Upright GPU Kit I Upright Graphics Card Kit for O11D EVO - Black - G89.011DE-2X.I) is same for both O11D EVO Mid and O11D EVO XL? I wanted to move on this case just because I wanted to move my GPU away from motherboard because when GPU temp increases it also increase the temps of my 990Pro's along with RAM significantly, I have ATX size MOBO and noctua nh-d15 AirCooler (on 7950x3d, 128GB RAM), what size of fan, what sides I should fill of this case with fans and what should the fan config to get the best cooling possible with my aircooler. I can move to AIO but it would make my nd-d15 useless and I don't want to waste money, however I have to move from my existing case anyway as it is very old.

    Great job😮
I will look out for more of your videos !
    Just one question
    What about having
    Aio side push& pull intake
    Bottom intake
    Rear intake
    Top only exhaust
    And gpu in vertical
You havent test this (the 2 rear intake and just top exhaust)
    How good would this ?
Rear intake seems to be great for cpu temps
    Pls reply !
    Nice job ! (:

    Hey Chris
I have a question that has been going on for two years and I don't find any answer for it
Do motherboards without chipset fans reduce performance in games as they depend on passive cooling, which reduces the wattage of parts such as the cpu and gpu
Thanks in advance for the answer

  • @wilkatis

Rear fans seem nice like this, but if you go for a reverse build don't they become completely pointless by being at the bottom of the case, thus creating a "in from the bottom, out near the bottom" corner that just moves air without cooling anything?

  • @nbot3000

When you use AIO on the side, you should push the hot air outside the case, NOT inside
