For this list, we’ll be looking at the most difficult and challenging video games released in the 21st century…so far, at least. Our coutndown for the hardest video games of the century includes “Darkest Dungeon” (2016), “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” (2019), “F-Zero GX” (2003), “Super Meat Boy” (2010), and more! If there’s a grueling modern game you want to grill us for not including, “git gud” in the comments!

Its not even hard, elden ring was 100x times harder (melee and no summons) and also dark souls 1

I’ve deleted and installed Bloodborne like 5 times before I really got the hang of it. It’s become one of my favorite games of all time.

I would almost say they turned things around from when they began, but when I think about it most of their games are money even the obscure ones for the original Playstation.

I 300%ed Cuphead with all s and p ranks and I'm not even that good at videogames. This videogame simply makes you git gud by force and by pure suffering.

To me, LoP is much harder than Nioh 2, sekiro, BB, Dark souls, elden ring. Nameless puppet I still need to beat it though
Elden Ring is now my favorite game of all time, but man Sekiro is such a brutal game! Demon of Hatred 🔥 👹 is very tough
I had to cheese that optional boss because it is was frustrating and removed the parry mechanics

You can parry everything from the demon but everyone thinks you have to dodge for some reason. Understand that and he’s not that bad

Elden ring, Sekiro and Bloodborne are tough to beat.
But Dark souls 2 is the only game where the enemies are harder to deal with than the bosses itself😂
Facts! That's the same situation with the latest Lords of the Fallen game. Beautiful game but very low fun factor due to all the gank enemies and weak bosses. Never felt that rush of accomplishment taking those bosses down.

Whenever i do reruns of this game, i always save iron keep and that rotten's place for the last lmao.
I max out my weapon of the playthrough before even going those places lmfao😂
Ahh man, iron keep is one of the main reasons I avoid replays of DS2, guaranteed to be smoked by arrows and tight areas to fight heavy hitting enemies, fire boss in a tight room was rough too. Only way to have a chance getting through that area is massive points in health and upgraded weapons. One of the worst areas in the whole trilogy along with Anor Londo from the og DS been years since I've played ds2 but hearing iron keep took me back to hell 😆
Man I found most of the big knights in DS3/elden ring way harder than the bosses
@@tygrandchamp1660 For me the worst enemy type in ds3 is the one who can suck your health bar in the dungeons.

I've played only 4 (Crash Bandicoot 4, Ninja Gaiden, Bloodborne, and Cuphead) and only finished 1 of them (Crash). I started playing Ninja Gaiden recently, and I am planning to finish it. I really like these types of games.
Ninja Gaiden is tough but fair. When you figure out how to deal with certain enemies it becomes muscle memory. Back on Xbox Classic I managed to beat Black on Very Hard, and it was indeed just that. But the feeling of accomplishment... second to none.
@thestigsdutchcousin I wouldn't have played it if it wasn't a Hack and Slash game because in this genre, you always feel like a really powerful badass regardless if the enemies are weak or tough. Which version of the game is the hardest?
@@Mr.Ditkovich. NGB is the hardest. It mixes up enemies and even bosses with each difficulty, even going so far as to introduce complete new ones very early.
@@thestigsdutchcousinno it isn't. The original ninja gaiden was harder because the camera was jankey as fuck and you didn't get the lunar staff.
The is a fairly accurate list the only omissions I could think of off the top of my head are Battletoads, Eco dolphin, Returnal

I'm playing XCom 2 finally- and my first mission outside of the tutorial was a complete party wipe. At least I didn't have time to get too attached to any of my characters...
Wait until you play the 'War of the Chosen' DLC, makes the base game somewhat manageable by comparison

After playing and finishing many of the games mentioned on this list, I'd like to point out another game I played that not many other people have, yet it's for whatever reason incredibly difficult especially on the later stages:
Digimon World 4
I don't know why, but it's a sort of game that absolutely brutal unless you spend lots of time grinding and grinding.
An interesting lesson is that pretty much all of these games were very well received, despite their difficulty, yet still many will tell you the audience expects more and more catering.
Sekiro was the most difficult game i ever played.
Glad to see here the great Crash Bandicoot 4.

you forgot about "SMT III Nocturne" and "SMT IV" (3ds)!!!!
There's another Roguelike game called Skul that I find to be incredibly difficult. The enemy patterns on typical levels aren't hard, but even the mini bosses halfway through each zone are difficult, and the entire 4th act will test your patience.

Maximo Ghosts to Glory / Army of Zin & Dodonpachi Daioujyou are WAY harder than some of the games on this list....
I always thought Dark Souls 2 was harder than 1 and 3. Since enemy spawns are limited, when you die and don't recover your souls that level up potential is lost forever unless you use a bonfire ascetic and face higher difficulty. A beautiful game really. I never understood the hate it gets.
A selection of 20 hard games would be more appropiate for a title
Celeste is by far the most demanding if you include the dlc ...the precision it requires is outstanding
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
The DLC expansion has been out for over two years, & some players still haven't beaten Alatreon & Fatalis, the last two superbosses.
Exactly, I don't understand how monster hunter is always getting ignored. Rise too has insanely difficult bosses like (hazard) Amatsu, Risen Crimsonglow Valstrax, Risen Shagaru Magala and Primordial Malzeno

Souls series r difficult, but the thing that would make this series a nightmare or any soulslike is if they aren't fair ... dark souls 2 and nioh 2 made that dream ( AKA nightmare ) come true without a doubt
@@tvgameskiller5286 The souls games are actually very fair there’s just a very steep learning curve. I’m playing through Dark Souls II right now and I’ve beat almost every boss (I’m at the end of the game) except for maybe 1 or 2 without dying. So it’s very fair just really tricky.

Bosses are almost fair. Anything else in the game and the entire majority of the community, they all agreed that anything else in the game isn't nearly fair, like bosses runs, and some level designs, enemies placements ...etc
@@tvgameskiller5286 I was mostly talking about bosses. But yeah there is some bs in the game. Mostly things like traps or hollow thieves that crit you around a blind corner.
Ninja Gaiden was such an amazing game. I played the he'll out of it when I was a kid and was obsessed with it. It was so hard but I endured and got so good at it. I even beat the game on HARD mode. Is probably why I love Souls like games today. Currently playing Lies of P.
Finally, someone who recognized ds2 as a hard game. People called it artificial difficulty because they can't spam roll and r1 across the whole game like in ds1 and ds3 lmao

Dark Souls 2 allows you to throttle your own experience. If it’s too hard, there are mechanics available. If it’s too easy, you don’t have to cheese if you don’t want to. You don’t have to be OP and destroy everything, it’s actually an enjoyable progression if taken seriously.
People are looking for what’s wrong with it but, SO much is good.
A good faith playthrough of Vanilla is a tremendous journey, I hope the stigma goes away eventually. It’s a great game :)

I always thought Nioh 1 was way harder than 2. The addition of burst counter and soul cores really made it too easy to muscle your way through the game.
Diablo 2 LOD is one of the hardest games made. Less than 1% of the player base ever completed Hell solo.
I beat cuphead no problem but souls games crush me. I barely made it through Sekiro and had to cheese several bosses.
I'm the complete opposite I beat all of the dark souls games as well as demons souls and nioh 1 and 2 but cuphead is kicking my ass I can't even get past the second island 😅
Well... Yeah, sekiro is the hardest souls game.
The easiest is probably DS1 due to how slow the game is, but that goes both ways.
Its funny that i am rly good at the faster souls likes like sekiro , ds3 and bloodborne but suck at Ds 1 and 2 still finished them, but cuphead destorys me

Am I the only one who thought Nioh (1) was harder than Nioh 2? I just always found that Nioh 2 you had more options and skills available to make things a little easier. Your Yokai form can be pretty OP if you invest right in it along with just weapons that scale incredibly well with some good traits. But I realize there are also things that may make it harder as well
I think a good number of people played Nioh 2 without playing the first one so they were going in a bit blind.
If you played the first Nioh you already knew what to expect, how the combat worked, and had to manage your ki and weight. That would make the second game a little bit easier.
Nioh 1 is WAY harder than 2.
I would never add Dark Souls 2 to the list. Despite the slow healing, the amount of souls the enemies drop after being defeated and the fact they have limited respawns makes it the easiest Souls.
yeah, I personally didn't have as much trouble with Ds2. It's still tough at times, like the DLC, but most of the base-game bosses were complete pushovers. Personally I think ds3 should have been somewhere on this list instead

It’s crazy cuz once you understand the art of parrying, Sekiro gets pretty easy. Getting a platinum was actually enjoyable

It took me like 50 runs to beat FTL on easy mode, and at least 20 of those were losing to the rebel flagship. I've got the trophy for beating the game on normal and I think only like 20% of steam players have it, it's a deceivingly hard game(and actually pretty dark).
Dude, did anyone ever play the NES/SNES? Some of those games were f-ing ridiculously hard
4 platinum out of these games, all the from software games except elden ring, haven't played it yet.

Out of the list I have played and quit hollow knight, cuphead, nioh 2, sekiro.
Dark souls 2 isn’t that difficult if you: level up health points and adaptability (effects your rolling i-frames), and kite enemies into smaller groups (the game is full of gank traps for players who rush in).
Did Sekiro not make the list?? What the heck lol. That game is substantially harder than DS2

Cuphead is really hard but the most fair of them all. Every game where you have to get a full frame perfect input run to complete a level is just unnecessary.

The fact that Crypt of the Necrodancer isn't on this list is a travesty. In the trophy hunting community, we rate the difficulty of getting the platinum (effectively a 100% completion) on a game from 1-10, with 1's being your Telltale games where you get a platinum just for finishing the story, and 10's being reserved for games like Super Meat Boy, Wolfenstein 2, and Splasher. However, it's almost universally agreed upon that Crypt of the Necrodancer is the only game that is worthy of an 11/10 in terms of difficulty.
In case you were interested, here are the difficulty rankings for the games listed here (Note: This is using difficulty ratings by consensus based on PlayStation platinum trophies).
*Nioh 2* - 5/10 (the DLC is a 7/10 though)
*Crash Bandicoot 4* - 9-10/10 (definitely deserving to be on this list)
*God Hand* - Unfortunately, it never had trophies, so I can't gauge whether this is deserving or not
*Hollow Knight* - 9/10 (the Pantheons, which are basically boss runs with no breaks, are what made this very hard)
*F-Zero GX* - Again, since it was made pre-trophies, I can't give an accurate rating.
*Darkest Dungeon* - 8/10 (not bad, it's on the level of the original Dark Souls in terms of difficulty)
*Celeste* - 9/10 (without Assist Mode), 2/10 (with Assist Mode)
*X-COM 2* - 9-10/10 (one of the few strategy games that reaches this level of difficulty)
*FTL: Faster than Light* - Not available on PlayStation, so I'm unable to make an informed rating.
*Ikaruga* - Again, before trophies were ever a thing, so I can't gauge this accurately.
*Elden Ring* - 7/10 (this may have some of the hardest bosses in Souls games, but overall, it's an easier experience for newcomers than the original Dark Souls)
*Cuphead* - 7/10 (beautiful game and one of the best games in recent years, but it's a tough but fair challenge)
*Bloodborne* - 8/10 (it's on par with Dark Souls for toughest Soulsborne)
*Super Meat Boy* - 10/10 (the no-death runs are the clincher for this)
*Geometry Dash* - Not a PS game, but it's infamous for it's difficulty, so I can definitely see it being up here
*Getting Over It* - Not a PS game, but boy do I remember the frustration here. My personal estimate would be a 7-8/10 just because of the frustration factor.
*Ninja Gaiden* - Released before trophies
*Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice* - 7/10 (whilst the gameplay is harder to get used to than most Soulsborne games, the bosses aren't the most difficult when compared to such monsters as Ornstein/Smough, Malenia, or Midir)
*Dark Souls 2* - 6/10 (this is actually considered one of FromSoftware's easiest games; it's difficult, but not on par with the other Soulsborne games)
Gow 2018 on gmgow+ was the hardest shit I have ever done in gaming

Sekiro and Cuphead, having to die so many times just to try and beat the games is just not worth it.

Control is pretty challenging and there are no difficulty modes. Jesse has no armor to protect her, her life bar never gets that long, and powerful enemies spawn everywhere she goes.
Not the hardest ever😢 but I got pretty frustrated later in the game, mostly because you can only heal with drops from enemies, so it’s easy to get cornered with 1hp left and be forced to make a suicide run to try and get some health back
Just throw objects on enemies. Remedy games were never too difficult.
