    LOVE THIS MOVIE! I saw it 40 years ago and have been looking for it ever since. It's got good backing music, a great moral, the underdog/s prevails and some of the greatest lines that reach deep. My favorite line is when the principal tells Ed that, "sometimes being a coach isn't necessarily about sports".

    • @boudusaved4719
      @boudusaved4719 Рік тому +2

      I think the line was "it could be that coaching has nothing to do with sports at all."

    It didn't take too long watching this movie before some similarities with the 1984 movie Footloose (also filmed in American Fork among other UT County locations) jumped out. Lorenzo Llamas' character is working at Lehi Roller Mills, which is the exact same location where Kevin Bacon worked in Footloose hauling those large feed bags.
    I noticed that the primary vehicle featured in both movies was a VW Beetle.
    Geneva Steel shots were in both movies. And prominent shots of snow covered Wasatch Mtns. featuring Mt. Timpanogos were featured in both movies as well.
    Footloose looks to have quite a few more Utah County locations than Takedown, but it is evident to me that Takedown inspired the backdrop for the 'no-dancing allowed' town featured a few years later in the movie Footloose.

    Disney didn't make the film, but they did pick it up for distribution, therefore making it the first PG film they distributed. The first PG film they produced at the Disney studios was The Black Hole. I saw TAKEDOWN at the drive-in, on a double bill with Freaky Friday. We all loved it. Searched for years to find it and found a. VHS release on the now defunct Unicorn label. Disney unfortunately didn't see fit to keep the distribution rights to release on video. This appears to be the same Unicorn print/copy.

    Hilarious when Flounder starts walking out to the mat with backwards headgear. I have been trying to find this movie for a long time. Legendary Coach Moyer of Wayland, Massachusetts played it at Monomoy Wrestling Camp in Brewster, Cape Cod the Summer of 1983 or 1984. All the wrestlers knew it was not very accurate, but we all thought it was hilarious and nice to see our sport in a movie. If you are looking for reality, watch a documentary. This movie is pure entertainment. For some reason tons of awful movies make it to DVD, it's a shame this very funny movie has not. Disney scrapped it for some reason.

    • @simplock
      @simplock 4 роки тому

      I thought that some of the wrestling footage was done very well and looked accurate. However, I did not recognize the takedown move that the coach practiced on this wife and the hero won the match with. I do agree that the part with the boy wrestling well only to music was funny, but very unrealistic. And it is very unlikely that a first year wrestler would be able to defeat an experienced champion.

      @@simplock Agreed. 'Vision Quest' may be a better "wrestling movie", but it does not tell a better story (imo). 'Vision Quest' is more narrowly focused. 'Take Down' has more of the elements you cited. 'Take Down' was obviously made on a relatively small budget, but I believe it does a fine job telling a more complete story. I prefer it as a film. It is a multi-faceted story of underdog kids and an unlikely coach having a wild, impossible dream to win big at something for once. Touching stuff.

Not bad considering California valley girls were just beginning to blossom in 1979.

      Are there any notable movie stars or athletes that have that?
      I'm interested.
      I've only met a couple of people from there.
      One I remember was at a big frat party at Cal "Berserkely" in the early 1980's
      After he told me he was ethnically Greek, I displayed my ignorance by telling him that I didn't know there were Greeks in Utah.
      He patiently explained that many Greeks had come to Utah to work mainly in the mining industries.
      I didn't notice that he had any particular accent.

      What the hell were we all doing, weighing in naked, oh yeah it was the 1980s, and certain people got kicked off the team and sent to the dive team.

      I wouldn't call it a real move. It was obviously put together for the movie and something you might have seen in the old WWF by Hulk Hogan. Notice at the end when it is used to win the match Lorenzo starts with his arms around the other guys head and arms, then when they roll onto the mat his left arm miraculously ends up under the guys leg trying to dramatically lock into a cradle. Completely silly.

      @@larrybaxter6881 I did not recognize that move and was skeptical about it being a real move. But much of the wrestling footage was well choreographed and looked very real. Most of the final match was well done with the hero attempting several moves and his opponent countering them all and totally controlling the match. The idea of a first year wrestler being able to pull a surprise move on an experienced champion and pin him was very unrealistic. But I really enjoyed the movie and was glad to see it appear on UA-cam.

    PhDs are always looking for jobs. Certification (an education degree) seems more important. I have a PhD, published a lot, taught at good universities. But there are a lot more jobs in K-12 teaching.
