LOVE THIS MOVIE! I saw it 40 years ago and have been looking for it ever since. It's got good backing music, a great moral, the underdog/s prevails and some of the greatest lines that reach deep. My favorite line is when the principal tells Ed that, "sometimes being a coach isn't necessarily about sports".
I loved this show. It's too bad they won't remaster it and release it on DVD. They filmed part of it in my home town with wrestlers from the local community college. It inspired me to take up wrestling!
What a GEM. One of the first movies I saw when my parents got cable. Low budget, mostly no name actors, but GREAT little movie that flew under the radar.
I went to hillcrest and was a spectator. It was so cool to watch. The Rockville coach, Bob Kawa, was actually the real Hillcrest High wrestling coach and had an identical twin brother, Glen, who was the wrestling coach at Kearns High School
Thanks for posting this. It's my grandsons first year of wrestling and I I was trying to find a copy for him.. $249.00 on Amazon was more than my budget could handle. Now I can send him the link. I't was just as great as I remembered it!!
Have him watch Vision Quest, much better movie IMO. That's if he's at an age where you think it would be appropriate. Pretty sure it's an R movie at least PG13
Thank you so much for putting this out there. I use to watch this movie all the time back in the day when HBO was one channel and played the same movies over and over again. Haven't seen it in almost 40 years. What a good movie. Thanks again. Peace.
This is awesome! My uncle was in this movie but his VHS copy got chewed up. I'm glad I can show this to him, although it's not in great shape. It's pretty much the only way he can see this again. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you so much for uploading this! I have been trying to find this for YEARS and have never been able to see it since my high school wrestling coach made me watch it the first day of the year every year.
Thanks for posting! Been looking for this movie without success for several years. Now it can be seen without having to be extorted by the person on Amazon who's trying to sell probably the only other copy in existence for $95. Keith Merrill is from my hometown and my dad's childhood friend and he didn't even have a copy. Thanks again!
Man , this is one of those long lost movies , think the last time I saw this film in full was back on Cable TV around 1980 , Looooonnnggg Time ! Great for posting this !
Thanks so much for sharing. I had recorded this movie from HBO, then erased it sometime later, only to regret it. I have not been able to find it since. I had forgotten how good it is.
I always loved this movie. Great underdog story. Snobby and pompous teacher learns empathy and humility while getting these kids to believe in themselves. This movie should be required viewing for all teachers and coaches.
IH was my schools first state champion and two time all stater at Heavy weight. Wrestling gave me the tools to succeed in in life. when I got out of high school I had 5 wrestling scholarships
Great movie!! The last time I remember seeing it on TV here in Michigan, probably mid eighties. It was shown as a saturday afternoon movie, with the Intro...We now return to the saturday afternoon movie, starring Lorenzo Lamas...Takedown. I hear it like it was yesterday!!!
It didn't take too long watching this movie before some similarities with the 1984 movie Footloose (also filmed in American Fork among other UT County locations) jumped out. Lorenzo Llamas' character is working at Lehi Roller Mills, which is the exact same location where Kevin Bacon worked in Footloose hauling those large feed bags. I noticed that the primary vehicle featured in both movies was a VW Beetle. Geneva Steel shots were in both movies. And prominent shots of snow covered Wasatch Mtns. featuring Mt. Timpanogos were featured in both movies as well. Footloose looks to have quite a few more Utah County locations than Takedown, but it is evident to me that Takedown inspired the backdrop for the 'no-dancing allowed' town featured a few years later in the movie Footloose.
About a year earlier I made a small commercial for Suzuki by the time it played I was in the military in Europe. Ive never seen it.LLOOLL It played on Wide World of Sport for a couple of motorcycle races. A friend of mine was a camera man I was just in the right spot at the right time. Nothing more!!
I love this movie. the character Ted Yocabobich (I think that's how its spelled, It's a little blurry lol) anyway, he is my cousin. The Orem Tigers is my High School in the 80s. My older brothers went there in the 70s. This movie has a lot of nostalgia for me.
This movie and VisionQuest where the two our coach made us watch in the mid 80's. I graduated in 87 and watched this movie at least a dozen times before graduation and maybe once since. Great flick.
Disney didn't make the film, but they did pick it up for distribution, therefore making it the first PG film they distributed. The first PG film they produced at the Disney studios was The Black Hole. I saw TAKEDOWN at the drive-in, on a double bill with Freaky Friday. We all loved it. Searched for years to find it and found a. VHS release on the now defunct Unicorn label. Disney unfortunately didn't see fit to keep the distribution rights to release on video. This appears to be the same Unicorn print/copy.
The guy that wrote this is Erick Hendershot, he was my highschool wrestling coach and english teacher. The guy was a complete asswipe but this is a pretty good flick.
I have been searching for this movie for 30+ years. I first watched in when I was 13 years old and for the life of me couldn't remember the name of it.
Hilarious when Flounder starts walking out to the mat with backwards headgear. I have been trying to find this movie for a long time. Legendary Coach Moyer of Wayland, Massachusetts played it at Monomoy Wrestling Camp in Brewster, Cape Cod the Summer of 1983 or 1984. All the wrestlers knew it was not very accurate, but we all thought it was hilarious and nice to see our sport in a movie. If you are looking for reality, watch a documentary. This movie is pure entertainment. For some reason tons of awful movies make it to DVD, it's a shame this very funny movie has not. Disney scrapped it for some reason.
I thought that some of the wrestling footage was done very well and looked accurate. However, I did not recognize the takedown move that the coach practiced on this wife and the hero won the match with. I do agree that the part with the boy wrestling well only to music was funny, but very unrealistic. And it is very unlikely that a first year wrestler would be able to defeat an experienced champion.
The big boy on the Mingo Junction team ended being a professional wrestler named Maxx Payne in the late 80's and early 90's. He was called Man Mountain Rock in the WWF. He didn't reach his potential because of a bad attitude and drugs.
I remember watching this on HBO back in the day... I have this on a VHS that I bought online... quality sucks like this. Wish there was a good copy somewhere.
Thank you for playing this movie! I haven't seen it since I was a kid watching it on the Disney Channel years ago and since it is out of print is hard to find. Again, thanks!
My dad is in this movie! He comes in at 32:30 and slaps Lorenzo, then he gets thrown into the car windshield. My dad tells us when he landed on the car, it broke the windshield accidently. They decided to keep the shot anyways. In the credits, he's called "Hood #2."
@@simplock Agreed. 'Vision Quest' may be a better "wrestling movie", but it does not tell a better story (imo). 'Vision Quest' is more narrowly focused. 'Take Down' has more of the elements you cited. 'Take Down' was obviously made on a relatively small budget, but I believe it does a fine job telling a more complete story. I prefer it as a film. It is a multi-faceted story of underdog kids and an unlikely coach having a wild, impossible dream to win big at something for once. Touching stuff.
I only had to click on the time line twice to find the scene I wanted to see. The scene where No Toe explains what happen to him. I remember that line since I was a kid and i'm 50 now. Plate of Shrimp.
My middle school team went to see it. I couldn't afford to go. Watched it years later and i wished I'd was able to see it with them. Bittersweet. Everything thing about this movie is so accurate.
Something I just noticed - Marsha ( OK her name was Brooke in this movie but her real name is Maureen McCormick for those who didn't grow up with the Brady Bunch) was actually speaking with a believable Utah accent at 20:30 and then again at 1:17:10. Not bad considering California valley girls were just beginning to blossom in 1979.
I didn't know there was a "Utah accent" Are there any notable movie stars or athletes that have that? I'm interested. I've only met a couple of people from there. He patiently explained that many Greeks had come to Utah to work mainly in the mining industries. I didn't notice that he had any particular accent.
