Things are worse in many ways in the U.S. But music, art, and thinking made possible through the ongoing psychedelic revolution are still here and are still being discovered by young people. Smarter, more aware alternatives are more accessible than before, although they are also more easily drowned out. Doors were opened that won't be closed.
I think, after 50-plus years of DEVO, it can be difficult to see the true heart of the music (the art, really) behind what younger fans might see as purely "wacky" or "wild" music and aesthetic. Then you watch something like this and realize "oh, *this* is where the themes and biting wit of their work comes from." Appreciate having this piece of media put out there, and thankful for the tunes and the message behind them over the years ❤
Gerry knocked it out of the park here! I've been saying the stuff he's saying my whole, albeit relatively short life, and its great to see that people were saying this stuff 54 years ago! Keep it up Devo!
Saw him in a much later interview where he mentioned CSN&Y's Almost Cut my Hair. Since he was actually *at* the shootings of Kent State, he said that fiasco totally changed his whole outlook and he went ahead and cut his. Understandably enough 😕
I've read the origin story of the band a few years ago. It sounded funny to me back then... but when I listened to this interview... all of it made sense to me today. And still holds ever truer now. Thank you for the insightful ideas..
I love Devo because they were always trying to communicate what the hell was going on , and they did it in a comically genius cryptic fashion. Songs like "Gates Of Steel" are so profound. I dont know if the writer of that song knew what he was writing, how it came to him, or what he felt it meant but theres a great truth in that song. Also the "Corporate Theme" instrumental is brilliant. These guys seemed to want to tell us all the secret truth of everything but just couldnt spill the beans and knew the only way was through satire and thoughtful passionate dark humor. Devo was awake a long time ago. Were they time travelers? Who the hell knows!
I can understand why Jerry might have thought the footage "disappeared". The BBC, like many broadcasters, were notorious for throwing out or taping over any footage that was deemed "no longer useable". England didn't have the kind of rerun culture we have Stateside, in part due to union regulations governing how many times a TV program could be rebroadcast. It's probably a minor miracle that this interview didn't meet the same fate as so many episodes of Doctor Who, Z Cars, Top Of The Pops, etc.
"I don't wanna give examples. I don't think I have to." and the gestures broadly at everything meme was born. Seriously though, I've been politically active since I was six. One of my first memories is my mom trying to explain the concept of war to me. I find nothing more beautiful than seeing young people out there trying to fix the system, even if it's an uphill battle. Jerry! 💓
If only being correct was more of a comfort. Fighting the good fight unfortunately does not assure victory. I don't think anyone can say in honesty that these spuds did not do their best. All while not becoming grim or saccrrine. Quite the feat for primates.
Having lived that era, this wasn't an isolated position for the youth at that point in time. But one by one, life takes its course, and some traded dreams for security, while others withered in obscurity. And now there are new voices to protest. But for how long? Even then we saw this storm for what it was. It was the muzzling of the voices of change, which actions are now openly displayed on the world stage. No one wanted to listen then, and no one wants to listen now.
The only thing that would make this more perfect would be if Chrissie Hynde - friend of Gerald and Mark at the time - were sitting in as well. Around this time they asked her to sing with them but she was too shy. Nine years later she was leading the Pretenders in England.
Chrissie wrote her own account of what happened in her memoir. She wrote about a ROTC building on campus set on fire prior to the massacre but we’ll never know if it was a provocateur. Yet today those who stand up for Palestine on campuses could face the same fate and it wouldn’t even budge the social media needle
I think university students are more intelligent and mature than we gave them credit for. Some of the musical and comedy legends (Pink Floyd, Queen, Monty Python and of course Devo) went to university. I think Devo were onto something because I think society is really de-evolving. I remember a debate between Monty Python and some Establishement figures about "Life of Brian" and the Pythons clearly had the higher ground when the Estabishment figures resorted to cheap jibes in reponse to the Python's rational arguments.
They were looking for silver linings but they were rotten to the core. Sounds familiar. They had just about all they could take, they couldn’t take no more. They had a gut feeling.
Interesting. Her last words were "rotten to the core," which shows up later in "Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy." ua-cam.com/video/Cwx_Qq56YTA/v-deo.htmlsi=fIKAOj2J79irfgT0
Well... these people kinda got their wish, now they actually run institutions, corporations and government, and freedom of speech and thought is the very last thing on their agenda!
Hello to my friends at the NSA. Enjoy the intel. Two observations: 1) I don't think many of the people who've weighed in here get out much. Their expressions are so insular. The majority of the rest of the world has wised up and are moving on. 2) The antidote to get out of the hole the US has dug itself into is to promote the conversation as outlined by Professor Chemerinksy at Berkeley (No Democracy Lasts Forever).
They should have picked who they talked to a little better, because that damned journalist is on the side of the Molech machine. It was about division 100+ years ago! JB STICKS TOGETHER,!@and to hell with the rest of us OSS what they say!
What an amazing piece of film. I feel he was quite mature for being just 22.
50 years later, has anything changed? As a matter of fact, it's worse! DEVO was right.
So Sad
Beautiful World

@@anonymoushuman8344 Youth today are logical as Lemmings
54 years on and still fighting the same corner, bless your heart Gerry!!
Gotta love it, the BBC captured on film one of the sparks that ignited the flame of Devo.
This is incredible.
Unbelievable. DEVO can be explained to almost anyone in these 4 minutes. Glad this footage was found.

Oh Wow!! How Amazing!!! So cool!!
I so clearly understood Devo the first time I heard you describe your experience at Kent State.
Gerry knocked it out of the park here! I've been saying the stuff he's saying my whole, albeit relatively short life, and its great to see that people were saying this stuff 54 years ago! Keep it up Devo!
Amazing footage.Never knew, that Gerald was a Mop Top.

"Oh Dad, were all Devo!"
We’re pinheads all!!
I'll be the contrarian here-
🧐 ' I say it's all just wind in sails'
When at the end the woman say "they're rotten, rotten to the core" I got big Gut Feeling vibes.
Yep
I've read the origin story of the band a few years ago. It sounded funny to me back then... but when I listened to this interview... all of it made sense to me today. And still holds ever truer now. Thank you for the insightful ideas..
I love Jerry’s outfit
Later is Now.
Sooner or later everything comes to light
This is freaking crazy, there is almost no photos of DEVO before DEVO!
Very cool. Thanks Jerry, for speaking the truth. It's all still true, of course.
Wow. I feel like the sentiment is similar amongst my peers in the present day. We really haven’t changed much in 50+ years I guess.
Dang, this is like a trip back in time, like watching the wedding scene in Deer Hunter.

Yeah, and it never aired in the USA.
Damn this is good!!👍🏽 All facts and here we are in 2024 and looks like shat hasn’t changed!
☝💯
same ol Jerry ❤
Workers of the world... Devo!
What happened there must have been painful, but is part of what made you who you are.
Jerrys haircut is something else. Im gonna try it.
Hahaha, that made my day😆
Amazing footage!

Esto de devo 1971 es única ,post hippismo ,la decadencia de Vietnam ,devo y Pére ubu grandes bandas.
Closing comment : They're rotten to the core... I wonder if Gerald picked up this line for for Gut feeling
Good job spotting that, you could be right.
Historic
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Absolutely beautiful

What a treasure find !!
He's So Different Looking In Here And I Like It
✨🔝✨
Great audio track.
They were right then and proven right today.
Cool. I love it.
Early Devo
Thanks for putting this up. It really seems things don't change much in the end, do they?
Think the lyrics of "Devo has feelings too" came from this
War. War never changes.
All I can say is I am gobsmacked. What was said back then is as bad as today. Today is probably even worse.
But first... Are you experienced? I am. I am.
Haircut inspired

These same institutions are even more rotten today then back in jerrys college days at ksu.
The General was/is correct!
Fast forward a few years and Jerry and James Honeyman-Scott could have played the "Separated at birth?" game.
It's exactly like today...How crappy we never leaned a damn thing...

Is that Bob Lewis sitting behind Gerald in this footage?
I looked for silver linings
But you're rotten to the core
I've had just about all I can take
You know I can't take it no more
*I believe the lyrics is "sniffy linings". Cheers!* 🤘🏼
I always thought it was “sniffy linings”too, but I did a quick copy and paste from some online lyrics.
How the turns table -Ricky
This could have been recorded today. "Wishin is for chumps, High hopin is for fools!"
Flush the fashion

That's not Gerald...it's Johnny Ramone!
Booji Boy was right: we are all Devo.
Cogent stuff! Then - and now - I am not sure people suss out who the real ninnies and the twits are, though!
Is that Mark as well ?
I thought it looked like him, but since he didn't mention it, I really don't see how it could be.
That is not Mark - was not selected to participate in this interview; he didn’t witness the killings on May 4th, 1970.
Rodney?
Stooges fan were you ?!!
Iggy Pop and the Stooges
👂 💚

R U EXPERIENCED?
Well... these people kinda got their wish, now they actually run institutions, corporations and government, and freedom of speech and thought is the very last thing on their agenda!

I never knew Devo were a bunch of dirty hippies!
I'm a potato!
2024 it's even worse
Spuds 2024.
...and by the year 1970, Gerald Casale will already be trying to rip off the style of Elliot Easton.
They should have picked who they talked to a little better, because that damned journalist is on the side of the Molech machine. It was about division 100+ years ago! JB STICKS TOGETHER,!@and to hell with the rest of us OSS what they say!
Trump 2024!
Casale is a Trumper
He most certainly is not. He despises Trump.
Cool...
