Devo and Kraftwerk deserve a lot of credit for bringing synth-based music into the mainstream. By keeping it simple and song focused, rather than complex and performance focused like most of the music of the 70's was.
I ignored them when i was younger, i liked Whip It and Freedom Of Choice as songs but my young testosteroned mind couldn't sit still enough to understand them at that time. Now that i am older i love them. They just blow me away.
i have something to say to all you Devo haters and the other one hit wonders that you all are forgetting they made it to MTV, Don Kristines Rock Concert and there own concerts and we all paid to see them and enjoyed their music so stop being a player hater people, I myself sat in with Bill Haleys Comets when they played Saugus Ma in the 80's and i got to do the lead to Rock around the clock and you know what if anyone like devo or one hit wonders ever had a show in my area i would be in line buying tickets. It dont matter how old you are or how popular you were your still a step above us so DEVO you go back and tour and knock em dead :) everytime i hear whip it i still get up and crack that whip ......
I like all kinds of music, but I always got Oh yeah you like that devo stuff. Its the same attitude from people towards people who like Star Trek. Its like oh you must be a weirdo. You can't be a fan of something, but you can be at a football game and paint yourself blue. Thats ok.
Sometimes it doesn't NEED to be about the mission statement. This was a great video about Devo's approach to music production, and just when it was getting good, edit, mission statement. Many times. Gripes.
Foo Fighters still use tape and they sound more fantastic than ever. Dave Grohl is old school and so is Devo and I do not agree that you have to be "brave" to admit that you were a fan back in the day when Devo first hit the music scene, you only have to be proud and I am. I was a fan back in the day when I first heard them and I'm an even bigger fan now, Love you guys and can't wait to see my fellow Ohioans at the LC Pavilion on June 16th in Columbus Ohio!! Tickets go on sale tomorrow!
Flagwaver 1969 , What an asshole ! It's such a shame that we must grow old as this conceptual band had it correct 40 plus years ago. I miss those days but thank god that I had the opportunity to see them several times and understand what it was all about. The four visionaries of Devo are not nor will they ever be forgotten. It's assholes like Flagwaver 1969 ( more like "Meatpuller" 2015 ) that are fucking this world up. Thanks Devo, for getting it right !
One thing I regret in my life is that I did not go to more concerts. Devo is definitely a band that I would have considered seeing. Devo is awesome. I have seen Sammy Hagar twice (once at the Toledo Zoo and once at Promenade Park in Toledo) and R.E.M (Luscious Jackson opened but my brother and I got a flat tire and missed them at the Palace where the Pistons used to play; at least we got to see all or almost all of R.E.M.) and Robert Plant at the Salvage Arena at the University of Toledo.
@ 2:03 Mark and Jerry are referring to the computer software programs for music sequencing called "Logic" and "Reason"... they are making a play on words
I have seen Mark's houses and they would officially be referred to as mansions. You know, the kind that THOSE OTHER GUYS live in. It is nice to hear that he drives a normal car though, really it is.
@1776Rosco I am motivated in life by love and compassion for other human beings. When people place love of their deity above their love for other human beings, they become capable of the most extraordinary evil, as history tells illustrates.
In my opinion. Devo was always ahead of it's time, and in a way... warned us with their music of the future. I think it's time they come back in the this new generation and show these kids what real music is like... maybe help form a new style, but on their terms. So... Ironically, I say that devo work on becoming the new face of this music era, such as cobain was the frontman for Generation X. I'd love to see some new Devo songs.
These guys have and always will be WHINNERS. A holier-than-thou attitude that they know what is best for the World. Nothing is ever THEIR fault. Their music i like... their advice they can keep!!
DEVO themselves delivered their message as well as could be expected; problem was, despite the warning, the public chose instead to take “Timeout For Fun”…
@RachelCorriesGhost I’m puzzled. I’m agreeing with you that their tine is past. There’s an old saying that people who praise themselves have a small fan base. Or something like that. I respect older performers who are still out there practicing their craft for the sheer love long after the spotlight, money, and groupies have migrated on to newer stuff.
@colemann76 Smooth Noodle Maps was "very good"? Not the last time I listened to it. It was certainly better than Total Devo, but that's not saying much. =P
@RachelCorriesGhost I’m agreeing with you that the Love Generation was pretty much stoned out. I myself have been clean and sober all my life Now…if your problem is simply with people who happen to have racked up a bunch of decades, I can’t do anything about that. Time goes by. People age. It happens.
Unfortunately we are de-evolving. We have environmentalist pushing us backward and cursing civilized progress, invention, production, and almost demanding that we regress toward a hunter-gatherer society. Government bureaucrats are all too happy to oblige as long as they are the ones with the purse strings.
Edgar Allan Poe tried to warn us of this "devolution" in his story "The Fall of the House of Usher" but no one listened. Perhaps this DEVO comeback will help!
DEvolution is real. What do we do about it? Can it be stopped? Should we just accept it? Maybe the new album will enlighten us all. Maybe it'll just be a soundtrack for the final decline of mankind. "Watch Us Work It" rocks! I hope to hear more along those lines. I feel so Devo I don't know what to do.
Hind-sight is 20/20, ain't it? Seeing this side of the decades is kind of bittersweet. Yeah, the message was right, but on the other hand... the message was right.
@thechessstick In your list of evidence you forgot the living examples of natural selection in birds and insects. Oh and the timeclocks of trees and radioactive dating that calibrate a timescale for evolution. Then there's the the fossil record and the traces of our earliest ancestors. And not forgetting the confirmation from molecular biology and genetics and much more . . .
@1776Rosco Of course there are medical challenges - many of them arising from the fact that we are living longer - but we are meeting them and overall the facts are that we are healthier and we enjoy longer lives. Of course science disproves itself all the time. Scepticism and doubt are integral parts of the scientific method. With each piece of new evidence we get closer to truth; but few questions are answered once and for all. That's what makes it superior to knowledge based on faith.
So, the BIG question is,did the Pinks and their ilk win?Did July 6th 1998 happen,or did it not? I say it DID,and we forgot, and linger in a mashed potato sort of way. Either way,Devo, play on,"Smart Patrol"!!!! BOB and Rev. Stang smile upon your efforts.Give my regards to Mr. Kamikaze and Mr. DNA. Those in the know(potatos or otherwise),understand...
Something just struck me, now I know this is nothing new but I think often we put the cart before the horse in this choice of worldview and its affect on us. Usually when we see a person who has chosen to believe in evolution we think that their life is then changed for the worse and sin enters in because now they think they can make their own rules. But I think often it is the other way around a person 1st gives into sin and then chooses a worldview to fit their lifestyle. Evidence is ignored.
@RachelCorriesGhost Apology accepted. It’s cool. Anything I listen to from the 1960’s is strictly for nostalgia. I’ve been into classical since forever. Beethoven, etc. & 1940’s; Bing Crosby, etc. & big movie scores, like by Miklos Rozsa & John Williams. & from flicks like Lord Of The Rings. My current favorite is Chevaliers de Sangreal from the Da Vinci Code. Listened to Mindless Self Indulgence; it’s a little nerve-jangling for me. To each their own. Vaya con Dios.
It's scary to think that all our parents were right when they said we too would be subjected to a style of music run by a different generation that we wouldn't agree with. They had rock n' roll, perhaps some of us had grunge or punk, whatever. but it's all the same. if you are a 90's kid, your time is comming to an end. Music today has become too simple yet sound difficult. It's like... the synthesyser in the 80's... move over electric guitar. Devo understands this... brilliantly.
BTW, does ANYONE out there know who this new drummer is out there for DEVO. He's no young spring chicken, or at least it looks that way, but he's kind of hot ... from what I can tell. NOT that I'm looking or anything, I'm just sayin.' Anyway, could he be the son of one of the original DEVO band members? I'm certain that it's not Alan ... so who is he?
@LHZZ12MM Yeah. People are people. If we’re lucky we don’t mess up the world any more than we have to. Maybe we even fix a few problems…and hopefully not be too complicit in the crimes of our era. It can be a hard gig.
@oobiedoob Agree in general but not about the bomb. Sure "a country that has the bomb" cannot be picked on by the major powers but since country means government here, it also leaves such a government even freer to treat its subjects as they see fit. Consider China, North Korea, Pakistan. Not all governments are as benevolent as (despite all their faults) Britain, the US or France.
@thechessstick People don't "choose" to "believe in evolution." Evolution has been established as fact by scientific evidence. I welcome the fact that so may believers in the supernatural refuse to accept the evidence, because ultimately their refusal will ensure that their reactionary ideas will wither and die.
@RachelCorriesGhost Alas. They…like me…are Baby Boomers. We unleashed the Full Of Ourselves curse on the world. Every generation before ours labored for the betterment of those coming after. The Greatest Gereration rode out the Great Depression and WW2. Then came Vietnam. We got on our High Horse. And you feel about us was we felt about the Greatest Generation. And those after you will feel about you what you feel about the Devo gen.
@1776Rosco As a species we are living longer; we are also healthier, wealthier and better educated. That doesn't mean that there aren't serious challenges, but overall the trend in human development is one of improvement. Belief in god is based on faith. Faith is an unreliable route to truth. Only science, depending as it does on evidence, reveals truth.
Interresting "trying to do our duty as reporters".......I thought reporters were supposed to report the news, not tell you what THEY think or even worse, tell you WHAT to think. At least Mark is honest about how "reporters" operate.
@thechessstick Supporting microevolution, but not macroevolution, is like saying that it is perfectly possible to use one domino brick to trip over another, but then throwing a fit and screaming that it is impossible to trip over an entire line of domino bricks in the same way.
@redword2007 And something isn't true because science says so, it's always being disputed and science disproves itself all the time . Hey, I'll admit when I'm wrong. You believe in your science and trust man and I'll believe in my God and trust his word.
Devo and Kraftwerk deserve a lot of credit for bringing synth-based music into the mainstream. By keeping it simple and song focused, rather than complex and performance focused like most of the music of the 70's was.
By the grace of the gods I got to see Devo twice. RIP Casales.
And Alan Meyers!!!
Jerry Casale is alive... His brother Bob passed.
RIP General Boy (Robert Mothersbaugh Sr.).
Rip spaz attack
Oh no I didn’t know spaz attack passed away! RIP
A man is real not made of steel !! Good to see Mark is not messed up on dope like a lot of artists. Aging gracefully. Much love !
Well said.
Words of truth..."devolution is real & it's happened"
and he must be a wee bit fed up explaining all this yet again to some fake tomatoes.
It is happening as we speak.
I ignored them when i was younger, i liked Whip It and Freedom Of Choice as songs but my young testosteroned mind couldn't sit still enough to understand them at that time. Now that i am older i love them. They just blow me away.
Mothersbaugh is a genius. I heart Devo.
Devo was way ahead of there time. That's what makes them GREAT!
"We're like the house band on the Titanic - entertaining everybody as we go down."
I have loved DEVO's music and quirky qualities for over 30 years.
The comments are wonderful... so much devo going on.
i have something to say to all you Devo haters and the other one hit wonders that you all are forgetting they made it to MTV, Don Kristines Rock Concert and there own concerts and we all paid to see them and enjoyed their music so stop being a player hater people, I myself sat in with Bill Haleys Comets when they played Saugus Ma in the 80's and i got to do the lead to Rock around the clock and you know what if anyone like devo or one hit wonders ever had a show in my area i would be in line buying tickets. It dont matter how old you are or how popular you were your still a step above us so DEVO you go back and tour and knock em dead :) everytime i hear whip it i still get up and crack that whip ......
Who hates Devo? What is there to hate? These guys clearly get what it's all about.
"we are the house band on the titanic"!!!!!.......
DEVO should rule the world like Dethklok does in Metalocalypse.
Sven Jansen totally would be down for that
YES. YESSSSS!
When a troll comes along
You must whip it
I like all kinds of music, but I always got Oh yeah you like that devo stuff. Its the same attitude from people towards people who like Star Trek. Its like oh you must be a weirdo. You can't be a fan of something, but you can be at a football game and paint yourself blue. Thats ok.
Great clip man thanks that was awesome. Like how it ended with "That's Good", one of my many favorite DEVO songs.
Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful comments on the demise of analogue technology for working creatively. Nearly did my PhD on the topic.
I like seeing all these positive posts!!!
They played a small bit in the movie 'Spirit of 76'. Worth a watch.

He's staying at the Sheraton! not bad for a guy from Akron.
God love them. When Devolution comes, I'll go through the blue door.
I was around when Devo came out. Only now I get it.
One thing I regret in my life is that I did not go to more concerts. Devo is definitely a band that I would have considered seeing. Devo is awesome. 10 spuds don't get the message.
these guys are so old, i feel bad i didnt know about them earlier, they only tour for so long
@ 2:03 Mark and Jerry are referring to the computer software programs for music sequencing called "Logic" and "Reason"... they are making a play on words
DEVO: Right diagnosis, rong prescription!
I have seen Mark's houses and they would officially be referred to as mansions. You know, the kind that THOSE OTHER GUYS live in.
It is nice to hear that he drives a normal car though, really it is.
It’s a beautiful world 🌎 ❤
❤️❤️❤️
the men who make the music!
until 1980

Neat band, always have been.
akron ohio baby...no record company wants to hear that, he's right

the energy dome is still awesome!
@colemann76 Smooth Noodle Maps was "very good"? Not the last time I listened to it. It was certainly better than Total Devo, but that's not saying much. =P
what song are they playing
WHY am I the only Black person at a DEVO concert for the last 40 years here in NYC???????????
Good one! I doubt many caught the reference...
at 4:04 what song is that?
@RachelCorriesGhost
I’m agreeing with you that the Love Generation was pretty much stoned out. I myself have been clean and sober all my life

@pamb440 I will be at the show and can't wait. All Hail DEVO
hahaha, what exactly was the message of the song Speed Racer?
Doctor kills so here's your bill.
YES!!! 👍👽
Hind-sight is 20/20, ain't it? Seeing this side of the decades is kind of bittersweet.
Yeah, the message was right, but on the other hand... the message was right.
The WOKEST of’3m all. One Devo to show us the mirror image truth. Are we not men?
I love DE-VO!

@reuterhunter1 "That's good" from "Oh No! It;s DEVO"
What they did, is what they did! Then they went, and then they hid!
With apologies to Devo for Misquoting them
Devo is like a true Christ to humanity.

Oh no it's Devo was very good and Smooth noodle maps was good too, the two inbetween were just average.
we’re all devo :/
@cretinbob sweet thanks i love devo my mom raised me with them lol

When I was a kid, I thought that Devo was just joking around about devolution. Obviously, NOT.
@bacofishtaco we are DEVO!!!!!
WE MUST REPEAT! OHIO!
Devo did what they could according to what they were allowed to do
