Might want to see a doctor, each time it pops it damages the tendon a little bit which can lead to the tendon fraying or even tearing. Had the same problem after a bad ankle injury had to get it fixed two months ago

False. I disliked because this surgeon is just a salesmen. Trying to say this is congenital so the only way to fix it is thru surgery. Its from injuries causing the muscles to spasm which leads to muscle imbalances.

Eh, I have had this issue after an injury for over a year now, and the information he gives in this video is minimal and does nothing to help the situation.
The video title implies there is important info to hear, yet he doesn't name the problem (peroneal tendon subluxation) nor does he provide basic solutions (foot, ankle and lower leg strengthening exercises) to help alleviate the issue as much as possible. One of the least informative videos or bits of information I have ever seen so far on this problem.

Or they realize that this video, despite its title, actually didn't explain much of anything properly.
For example, the issue is called "peroneal tendon subluxation", which is not mentioned here, and also he didn't even think to mention that strengthening the muscles responsible for stabilization and overall balance would help alleviate the problem to varying degrees.
This is arguably the worst video on this subject on youtube, and I have seen around 30~ of them due to my own problem.

    • @someone-ji2zb
      @someone-ji2zb 11 місяців тому

Loud pops means the tendon is scraping over the bone, which means it is developing microtears over time that take a lot time to heal, which also gets slower with age.
Don't make my mistake. Go see a specialist who can check your foot; if you don't want to fork out the cash for an MRI, seek a specialist with an ultra sound and tell them you believe you are experiencing some form of peroneal tendon subluxation.

i had peroneal tendon surgery back in november 2012 at 17yrs old to repair a badly torn tendon (broke that ankle and it healed incorrectly and repeated sprains prior to operation) and a year later had to go back to an orthopedic surgeon for the same pre-surgery complaint and an MRI showed the tendon is once again torn and just recently i've been experiencing increased laxity and every step i take, i feel and hear a popping going on. it doesn't help that i work retail and during our shifts we aren't allowed to sit unless we are on break.
long story short, thank you for the video Dr. Lam! having more insight is helpful in management because i'm hesitating another surgery due to college and work.

A very possible reason is if the axis of the ankle is out of alignment which mostly is caused by the tibia and fibula being out of alignment, which can possible always have been so or occurs after an ankle trauma like twisting the ankle. These positions can be adjusted again by specific exercises or by an osteopath. Try these options before undergoing any operation!!

I've always thought of my ankles as really weak, I roll them all the time. They give out on me. Been on crutches once for rolling them just from stepping off of step, and I stepped carefully due to this and still rolled it and heard a very audible snap! There was once, I was on a step stool near a fryer, I work with food, and as I stepped down, my ankle gives out and my hand damn near went into the oil. But the most annoying, and slightly painful, not too mention uncomfortable feeling is when I flex my feet and it feels like my ankle pops out of place. I'm almost sure this is what the deal is! I just now had to snap everything back into place, by using a step ladder, and ballet plies...oh and I had to suppress a scream due to living in an apartment!

I don't know what exactly I have, or whether it even IS THIS, but my ankles have cracked loudly since about 10 years old. I can crack both of them every few minutes if I want to. It doesn't hurt even a bit, and it's kinda fun to do. It just makes it IMPOSSIBLE for me to sneak or move around stealthily at night. I could never be a burglar! I used to try and sneak into my folks room and steal our two small dogs from the foot of the bed, but they'd hear my noisy ankles popping and run up higher on the bed before could grab them. Oh well. It's become a part of who I am now, and I couldn't imagine them NOT popping all the time. I love my crackly ankles, and I wouldn't change them!

Dr. Kevin Lam: Popping peroneal syndrome on an 11 year-old child with classic symptoms. Basically, popping peroneal syndrome is when kids or adults come in complaining about “Hey, I feel a bone pop behind the ankle”. This is the grove where the peroneal tendons are supposed to be. The peroneal tendons are on the lateral or the outside of the ankle. So this is going to be right here on this side.
The tendon is supposed to run behind the fibula, come around, one attaches here, the other one goes underneath the foot and goes and attaches down here, so the two peroneal tendons.
Now, when we feel the pop, that tendon lies in front of this bone and it pops in front and that’s where that happens. A couple of different reasons why that happens is one, either the groove is too shallow, that’s one way. This is supposed to have a little pit, almost a “c” shaped groove in the back which this bone model shows a little bit right here. Some kids are born with ones that are too shallow.
Another thing is -- a less likely cause is patients are born with that tissue that holds it in being too weak. If that is too weak, we can still go ahead and repair that. An MRI will give us an idea of, if the groove is too shallow, we can go ahead and fashion a groove right here with a little bore, make it a deeper “c” shape and then reinforce and replace the tendon behind so that it won’t pop.
So now to the patient, here’s how we could tell. This is the fibula right here and this is the tendon that runs right behind it. This is the fibula outline and this is the tendon right here. Good anatomy lesson, this the peroneal tendon.
Now I’m going to have you put your toes over to that wall for me, okay? Point over there. Okay. As she points, we’re going to see this tendon bowstring, this tendon bowstring… relax… this tendon is going to bowstring to the side of the fibula. Point that way again, one more time. And that’s what causes the pop.
Dr. Kevin Lam: As you can see this tendon is very, very prominent, right here now. If I could see it right there, push, push, push, push… right here, it’s almost on the side of the fibula, right now. Relax. Now, tendon relocates. Now push again. The tendon comes out to the side again right here. And that’s what the pop is.
    Patient: Mhmm.
Dr. Kevin Lam: It’s more pronounced on the other side, but it’s harder to see. We’re going do it one more time. This is the peroneus brevis tendon, I’m tracing it from here to here, inserts into the base of number five.
You’re going to relax for me for one more time, we’re going to… right there. See that tendon? Just by doing that without her doing any force, this is called the peroneal tendon stress test. So I dorsiflex, make you do something called evert, so I dorsiflex and evert and this tendon would dislocate up front to the side. And I can feel a pop. You can hear the audible pop right now. I’m reproducing the pop.
Dr. Kevin Lam: Is that what you hear when you walk?
    Patient: Yes.
Dr. Kevin Lam: That’s the peroneal tendon dislocation, peroneal popping syndrome. I can feel my hand and she could hear it and you can hear it at home, this popping sound from her tendon.
Now sometimes patients have a tear on this tendon, that’s what the MRI is going to tell us too. If there’s a tear, again, we could repair and replace it back. So there’s a couple of different things that can cause this. Number one, we went over the shallow grove, back here, if it’s too shallow, that tendon can pop forward. Or if a patient has a tear in that tendon, it can pop forward. Or if the ligament - there’s a ligament that holds this behind called the peroneal retinaculum, it hold this tendon back. If she was born with a weakened ligament back here, that can also cause that tendon to pop forward. Now, the chance of her having a tear back here being the primary cause is fairly low because she has it on both sides. So most likely, one of the congenital deformities that was causing this popping to happen. So an MRI will be ordered, we’ll figure it out and we’ll come up with the best choice of care.
    Dr. Kevin Lam: Any questions?
    Patient: No.
    Dr. Kevin Lam: Okay, good.

Well, thanks to this video, i know that's not what i have, but i still get pain in the one that attaches on the same side that it runs, as well as pain on the Extensor digitorum longus at about the ankle. I'm hoping to God it's tendonitis and not tendonosis. Goes away, comes back, goes away, comes back. I had a history of tendonitis in the digitorum tendons closer to the toes, too. At least, now, i know what i do NOT have, so i thank you for your video.

I have Peroneus longus Pain after doing a Half Marathon. Usually this happens if I don't stretch my hips and activate my Glutes and Hamstrings properly before my run resulting in poor body mechanics. I have ankle popping as well but if I do my stretches and mobility work it goes away. The problem is in the Hips and Pelvis and the type of shoes and how they are tied and warn. Different types of shoes are meant for different things and.. they matter. Go see a Physical Therapist specifically a sports therapist who will give you exercises and stretches to do that strengthen your body properly and this issue might go away for you as well.

Hey, hope I can add to this a little. From what I find clinically, clicking ankles are usually just a product of some mechanical restrictions in and around the ankle joint. Sorting it out is often as simple as looking for, and releasing these areas, allowing the tendons that click to return to normal function.
Here's a simple video that covers some basic exercises to rectify these hidden features. Hope it helps!

I'm 25 and I've had fairly severe popping ankles for most of my life. If I rotate them they pop, sometimes involuntarily while moving. I can feel the pressure build up in them. If I consciously rotate them too much I'll get shin splints. If I can recall I think it started when I began doing sport which were jujitsu and soccer at first and I probably twisted my ankles numerous times. I know began too roll and twist them more often when I most involved in sports age 11-18 and it corresponded with a higher degree of poping and ankle pain.

HI Kevin, I got an injury in my ankle while playing soccer 7 years ago and since than my ankle is popping like crazy. It is so pain, so pain that sometime I cannot sleep at night. I went to the doctor, get MRI, chiropractor, physio and nothing is getting better. It is popping so loud that everybody in the office stare at me when it happen (every 15~30 min), no one seem to get use to it. Now I watch your video and for the first time in years someone is telling me something that make sense. But now, I want to know how can I fix this, what are my option? Good to have the diagnose, but I am afraid that my doctors that could not tell me what you are saying in this video, they would not give me the proper treatment for it. Maybe that is why you get some dislikers. But I want to thank you for this video, it is very helpful for me and maybe this will help me getting the right treatment

Sorry this is a late replay but I'm a 16 year old who has had this going on for 8 years now( misdiagnosed many times) the "popping" you feel should be happing quiet often for me every time I flex my foot my tendons subluxate(pop) when I walk you can see my tendons coming out with every step I take and also hear the pop and can see it. If your not experiencing it that often I wouldn't be too worried about it. Mine almost right away started doing it countless times with in minuets and with every step I took.

if you have per. tendon dislocations, make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who is an ankle specialist. everyone else is just trained to ice and elevate, and most regular orthopedic surgeons will just cast you with the hopes of it healing. this needs surgery, and especially with chronic cases it doesn't usually heal from immobilization

see for me it's different. I do not intentionally pop it most times but it feels like there is a pressure at random times in my ankle and it will eventually pop (or intentionally I will to relieve it) and that will happen I can't even count how many times a day. can't really find anything on it that really describes it either. as for which side it's a little everywhere. most recently it's the inner side of the foot. but I've had it what feels like middle and outside aswell.

Old post I know, but now that I have had an injury and gone through this for over a year, I will say you need to strengthen ALL of your foot/ankle muscles, calf muscles, and overall leg/glute/hip rotator muscles to force your body to walk correctly and relieve impact on the foot by having the strength to do so.
However, nothing truly fixes the subluxation (the tendon slipping) if it has been over a year of it happening, outside of surgical procedures. And even then, after the surgery, you HAVE to go through months of physical therapy to stand a chance of a good recovery.
My issue was similar to yours. My left foot from childhood always was able to have that popping when rotating and it was fine for over 25 years, but the issue is that the basic popping was the tendon going over bone, meaning microtears were happening slowly but surely, until finally a basic movement popped the tendon with so much force that it also damaged ligaments on the way over, leading to tendonitis.
