Are you experiencing snapping, popping or grinding shoulder pain in your shoulder blade region? This might be creating pain, limiting your shoulder function or causing other issues in and around that area. This sensation can be caused by Snapping Scapular, which is exactly what it sounds like: snapping, popping and grinding around the shoulder blade. There are many reasons why it happens and how to treat it.
The Anatomy of the Scapular/Shoulder Blade
To understand what’s going on with the shoulder blade, it’s important to look at the anatomy. In a resting position, your shoulder blade sits on top of the rib cage. There is a connection, but there is space between the shoulder blade. If that space becomes thinner - meaning there’s not enough room for the shoulder blade to move around over the rib cage - you can get essentially too much friction, which creates grinding, popping and snapping of that shoulder blade on top of the rib cage.
    What Causes Snapping Scapular?
Your shoulder blade moves any time you move your shoulder/arm. Your shoulder blade moves the most when you start lifting your arm overhead. The people who are more susceptible usually participate in sports or have jobs that require a lot of overhead action.
Sometimes there are certain people who have certain changes in their anatomy that makes them more susceptible to this. Anatomy variations can lead to the development of muscular imbalances/compensations, which can change the way the muscles work and cause the condition to develop over time. It can lead to trigger points and restrictions in the fascia.
You can also have trauma in this area - car accidents, a bad fall or any impact in this area can changes the way the shoulder blade functions and cause muscular imbalances over time.
Poor Posture Can Trigger Chronic Shoulder Pain
There’s a lot of things that can cause acute, sudden pain. However, if you are continuing to have this issue without relief, then you have to look at the musculature and why this might be happening.
Posture can affect our musculature over time. Posture can trigger many different imbalances in and around this area, which all contributes to snapping shoulder blade syndrome.
We’re sitting more and more these days and hunching over more and more at our computer and on our smart phone. Over time, this will change the posture that you have and make it more rounded, which changes the way your shoulder blade sits on your rib cage.
This change can create imbalances, not only around the rib cage/shoulder blade, but also around the musculature that connects to the front of your chest, into the head and neck and down further below into the pelvis. Many muscles that attach to the shoulder blade also attach to the spine, the neck, the head, the rib cage and all the way down into the pelvis. Everything is interconnected to each other, so issues in the shoulder blade region can trigger issues in other parts of the body.
    Treating Should Pain Holistically
To get the muscles working properly and alleviate pain, it’s important to look at the alignment of the whole body. Sometimes you have to treat the joints as well as retrain the muscles through stability exercises to get everything working properly. Working to maintain good posture will help as well.
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, physical therapy can help. Click here to schedule a complimentary phone consultation with one of our physical therapists.

I have herniated and bulged disk on my neck c5,c6,c7. That gives me pain on my neck, shoulder arm etc. Like that wasn't enough, my shoulder blade clicks sometimes when I move it. I'm 40 and I have to live with it. I have watched many videos, but this one makes sense more than any other. Now I can explain the constant stiffness that I have on my back shoulder and chest. I checked for my heart, to make sure because I didn't know. Everything was fine. Now it all makes sense watching this video. Thank you a lot. And also you look gorgeous too.

This helped a lot. I've been having this "shoulder issue" for YEARS since I was in high school. Got worse over time and was misdiagnosed. Finally found someone that explained this perfectly. I have rounded shoulders and being heavy chested does NOT help lol. I definitely have some neck and spine issues as well, so everything you said made perfect sense. Thank you!

Greatest explanation so far and I'm glad I stumbled upon this video. This woman knows her stuff and she pretty much sums up the issues I'm having. I have a combination of scapula diskynesia, snapping scapula or scapulathoracic bursitis with TOS symptoms (particulary cold hand) and also some impinchement and shoulder instability symptoms. I have a constant dull ache along and underneath the upper medial border of the right scapula which sometimes feels like a nasty pinch. Also discomfort and tension in the head muscles with brain fog and agitation. These symptoms worsen with rest which can make it debilitating. It all started with a pinch in the shoulderblade followed by muscle spasm and a sharp pain through the arm and into the hand but now the pain is mostly located in the shoulderblade. Also some mild shooting pain or cramp in the pectoral muscles. When it comes to movement I have trouble putting my arm on the back (scratch test). Physically the superior angle of the right shoulder blade looks forward tilted while the inferior angle has a tendency to protract. Also asymmetry of the musles along the medial border of the shoulderblade. Does this look familiar? If you or anyone else knows of any experts specialised in this specific issue in The Netherlands please let me know.

The rounding of the shoulders is definitely the cause in my case.
This is due to an overdevelopment of the chest muscles from years of benchpresing in my youth.
The causation and symptomalogy are all due to this interconnectivity.
Now comes the hard part in trying to correct this muscle imbalance.

I have this in my left shoulder. I got it from doing this, 100 a day for 30 days, pushup challenge right when the pandemic hit Feb/Mar. (I was using a yoga ball, while putting my feet on the ball and hands on the floor. Obviously over extending myself.) I felt something snap, like muscle tearing away from the ribcage. I felt a bit heavy on the left side too. THE PAIN is real! I didn't get treatment cause we were in lockdown. 7 months later. I felt I could start light aerobics for a workout. One of the days, I chose air boxing. It was 9/30/2020. I was okay, until that night the pain set it. The pain is so deep and dull, it effects my actual shoulder and collarbone and neck. I have loud grinding and pain when moving my shoulder back and forth. I have had two MRIs of just my shoulder. One with contrast, one without. Showing tendonitis, and a strained muscle with possible underlying issues in other areas. Now I'm going to an ortho for help. I have had injections into the shoulder, and nothing has helped. I've been in PT for 2 months, and that is more less aggravating my shoulder. So I'm off to an ortho next week to see what is next. How is everyone managing their pain. Because I stopped taking NORCO two and a half weeks ago, and am only taking ibuprofen and Flexeril. The flexeril makes me super sleepy, so I only take it at night. Should I just plan on dealing with this for the rest of my life? No more kayaking, working out my upper body, or even picking heavy things up?

for an average Joe, it starts at thoracic spine and how the misaligned vertebrae effects ribs that scapula sits and slides on. For more advanced, everything starts or is held by misaligned pelvis. Tilted/misaligned pelvic/sacrum cant have straight spine above. Thats in a nutshell. Put these in better place and we have much less to think about. Peace

Can you expand on this? Is seeing a chiropractor the solution?

    • @SolidSiren
      @SolidSiren 3 роки тому +3

@@TheDpower12 A chiropractor is almost never the solution for anything. There are a few minor and highly specific things a chiro is good for, but in general, there are a lot of reasons it is not considered science and why you shouldn't go to one. (Background: Ive had bodywide chronic musculoskeletal pain and neuropathy, with multiple herniated disks in my spine, for about 18 years now. I have seen every kind of doctor I could find, I've done every treatment I've heard about, I'm open minded. I've done PT, massage, pain meds, acupuncture, chiro, biofeedback, rhizotomies, steroid injections, epidural injections, exercise, yoga, and various diets to try to change my pain and health. What ended up helping? Medication, exercise, mindfulness and time.)
Its pseudoscience. This Is not the result of snobby doctors looking down on other doctors. This is science, and some things are called pseudoscience exactly because they do not hold up to scrutiny. A real science holds up to scrutiny. A real science makes repeatable predictions, and has reproducable results. Chiropractics does not. Chiropractors are not doctors, FYI. They DO study chiro for an insanely long amount of time but don't have a medical degree, just want everyone to understand that. If you want to know the nuance behind that and why people think its important to distinguish that difference, I suggest looking into it. Its not to demean chiropractic, it's important. Please understand that the criticisms of the practice are not the same as modern science just being resentful of and shunning things it may not understand because it isn't part of our culture in the West, like acupuncture. Science doesn't work that way. Science denounces nothing that has legitimate evidence to support it, in fact. To do so would be unscientific.

Try stretching and strengthening your serratus anterior. It's the muscle that connects beneath the scapula and wraps around the rib cage, connecting to the sternum. It pulls your scapula forward around the rib cage and towards the font of your body. When it is tight it can cause strain on your trapezius, especially middle trapezius, which is responsible for pulling the scapula back and retracting it towards your spine. I have snapping scapula and pain between my spine and shoulder blade and this is helping tremendously. I used to think I had to crack it, but really you need to release the tension on the trapezius by stretching the serratus anterior.

I've uncovered much in seeing muscles as cable suspension's that can still hold up a structure(bones) even when they endure some failure. Agree with all she says but noticed asap the erector spinea muscles going from lower back up underneath the shoulder blade. I don't see how if you got an exercise to target and rebuild those muscles underneath shoulder blade, that being rebuilt would not allow blade to contact ribs for any grinding. Much more and not to be taken as medical advice, look again for yourself.

I have also had my sternoclavicular joint removed due to osteo arthritis. I have recently (July 2020) had an injection in my shoulder blade which took the pain off for around two weeks. I am now waiting for surgery to take a bony lump from my shoulder blade to see if this will work. I am in pain all the time. I have fibromyalgia. I feel down all the time with this. I am beside myself as what to do as I still work although I’ve now been off a while as all this stress is impacting on my condition. I did do Pilates once a week which helped me with my pain but due to the lockdown this has not happened and I find it difficult to motivate myself to doing exercises at home when I’m feeling crap all the time. I have read all the comments under this UA-cam video and I sympathise with you all. I thought I was the only person in the world that suffered from this as no one seems to know about it. I have aching in my jaw since being a teenager my arms hurt my neck hurts my legs hurt my back hurts. Now I seem to get headaches from the muscles that go up into my head. My tongue is sore. I am so hoping the consultant that I have recently found in Leeds England will be able to help to sort me out. Thanks for adding this video. I now Know that I am not alone in this.

I am so sorry to hear about it, i hope you feel better soon. I have been feeling low as well with the muscular imbalances and other things going on with my life. I have changed my diet and have been working out everyday and its helping me very much. At times you feel like no one can understand what this is like and some may even ridicule you but just know that you will feel better soon and believe in the process and make a change in your lifestyle and habits. Good luck.

Sorry for that, I've had this myself for a year and few months. I've gone to chiropractors and it only helps for few weeks. Its horrible necessary pain. I wish it would go away. I can confidently say that I would give up an arm or a leg for it to go away.

My question is if this condition ever goes away. I have had this for more than three years. Was going to physical therapy but had to cancel the sessions since I no longer work. My right shoulder pops if I reach up. Therapist said my problem starts from neck, leads to upper right back and then upper right arm. Have been doing exercises consistently over last five days but feel like it is not improving.
I told so many doctors that I have a grinding sensation in upper back. Doctors never sent me to do an MRI. Therapist also said an MRI would not be necessary.

I've been struggling for about 8 years as well. It took me that long to find something that helps and nobody talks about!

I have chornic pain in this area and my neck its ruining my life, I'm having to take strong pain medication and it feels like the doctor has given up on me. I'm 18 and feel like a 80 year old, this isn't living :(

      @nertil80 4 роки тому +1

I had pain in these areas for 3-4 years, and I just didn't know what it was. Finally going to different specialist and doctors turned out that I had bulged and herniated dick on my C5, C6, C7. That causes all that pain on shoulder, neck, arm, chest etc. You might want to look in that direction if you haven't done it yet. It will help you find a solution or treatment. For me, stretches help a lot, but the pain is still there. Good luck buddy

Same here bro. Chronic pain in my rhomboids and trapezius area on left side for 20 years now. Docs and pain specialists gave up on me. Myafacial pain syndrome and snapping scapula is what I think its called. I still take pain Meds but they've ruined my intestine I think coz now I have chronic pain there too. I'd love to get my shoulder scapula fixed coz it has officially taken the last 20 years from me. My life is in limbo because of it. Why can't someone fix us? They just see you for 15 mins then say bye,...see you again. They don't spend nearly enough time trying to diagnose the problem and find a fix for it. They should really focus their time on people with problems that aren't common. The pain is so much worse than it was two years ago...... I ferl 80 years old also. I got fibromyalgia too, ...which stems from this chronic shoulder pain, in my opinion. What else is gonna happen to me because of this long term chronic problem? Suicide does seem like the only option to escape this hell. That's where I'm at now. People didn't like me taking drugs every day to escape my pain and give me some energy to do every day things. Death seems the only logical solution, since the hospital and chiropractors I've seen over the years haven't done much to fix me. I do stick acupuncture needles in it sonetimex though, which helps the pain a bit.
