QEII is a constitutional figure. She isn't supposed to say how she feels, she has to "keep her trap shut". That reporter is nuts. She took something that any male King would have to follow and tried to paint QE as a horrible role model for young women. She's respectful of others, keeps to her word, shows up and does her job, how is this a bad example? In the world Kardashians I'm pretty sure a parent wouldn't mind saying be like QEII.
The Queen is a rock. She's done what she knew to be her role in life with dedication and sincerity. So easy to sit back and criticise, much harder to get up and do things.

Yeah, that kinda sucked but the UK is not like that now. We don't loot or steal. It's like saying that Germany is a terrible country just because of their past, completely ignoring the fact that they have said sorry and rebuilt relations. I've met many Asians that have accepted the past and moved on. Most Brtions are sorry for all that have happened and I hope that every country in the world prospers :)

+Josh Shacklock Where do British people come from? From the provinces of Anglia and Saxony, Germany. Hence, Anglo-Saxons. English is a German dialect. Prior to 1847, there was no "German" nationality. Germany was composed of independent kingdoms and duchies in Central Europe. Saxe-Coburg Gotha was a Saxon-Bavarian duchy while Hannover was a kingdom - not necessarily "German" in the Prussian sense of the word. Not to mention, the United States' population is composed of 30% German ancestry.
Jon Targaryen Gee really? ;) The point I was making is we don't have a monarchy that is contiguous with the Plantagenet dynasty. I'm quite aware most ethnicites throughout Western Europe (and greater to a degree) are strongly germanic in root. As to the people claiming i'm dramatizing the 'enslavement' role of English/British/Norman monarchs up until very recently...come on, it's not like I'm making it up. You did what you were told and did what the monarchy and their invested aristocracy asked of you, even as it often was if it was deeply unfair. The distribution of wealth, comfortable living and justice was severely skewed for a thousand years. Hell dragoons were still riding people down en-mass up until 1819 here in Manchester. Al I'm getting at really is that the monarchy is, first and foremost anything else it may be secondarily, the epitome and most visual manifestation of undeserved power and control over other human beings for ones own benefit. Granted, that may well be inevitable in 99.9% percent of human cultures but it doesn't mean we should enshrine it in an epoch in time when we supposedly stand as the bastion of freedom and progress in an increasingly dark and hostile world.
Mr.Will self first of all congratulations you are part of minority-republicans- now. Secondly the British monarchy as an institution continues to serve with devotion to many nations while you are speaking rubbishly insane things about Her Majesty The Queen. The Monarchy is the very life and soul of the united kingdom because it represents the beautiful image of UK in the world. Alot of people in commonwealth of nations who dont like uk due to the invasions and movements of conquering during the colonial era, still hold affection and respect and honour her in their hearts. She is still a ideal figure of multi million people around the world. So if you cant respect the monarchy in uk than i am sorry to say that you have only two options. Keep you mouth shut or leave the uk. We No place for republicans here.
"Alot of people in commonwealth of nations who dont like uk due to the invasions and movements of conquering during the colonial era, still hold affection and respect and honour her in their hearts." That sounds like the most absurd statement I've ever heard, besides being a contradiction in terms how do you know what others feel? 20% of the UK wish for a Republic and out of the 80% the majority are totally indifferent and have no insight hence the figures are warped. There is plenty of room for the growing Republican movement as people begin to awaken to what's going on.
Inadvertently I made fun of her family at 18 years old, unknowingly to a relative of hers. She kinda cried, I was indirectly trying to understand the family values. Now at 50 I may over value their British value. Eric Williams

While some monarchies have traditions of abdication in favour of the heir when a sitting monarch hits old age, the British monarchy isn't one of them. The last (and only) willing abdication by a British monarch was the Queen's uncle, and it nearly toppled the entire institution because it triggered a constitutional crisis. Not only would she remember that, she also partially blames the abdication crisis for her father dying so young, due to the amount of stress the responsibility of Kingship (during a war, no less) placed on his shoulders. (He also had lung cancer, being a heavy smoker, so being King certainly wasn't the only or even main cause of his death, but it absolutely didn't help.) Whether you or I agree with the system of a monarchy or not (and I don't, by the way), the Queen clearly takes her role and the duty she feels comes with it very seriously. If she made a vow to serve for life, she's going to serve for life, and that's all there is to it.
roskruge Obviously, it did, but we're talking about the Queen's opinion on it - not yours or mine. It's a well documented fact that both the Queen and the Queen Mother felt that the responsibility of being King and the stress that caused him played a role. I'm pretty sure I made perfectly clear in my original comment that he had lung cancer due to being a heavy smoker.
+666j1 It's not the job of a head of state to be glamorous. And this is an 89 year old woman who still has functions to perform, because she sees it as a job for life. Does such an elderly lady have to be a looker - and who are you to criticise her if she is not? Are you a paragon of loveliness yourself - and would you be able to fulfill such a role at such an advanced age?
