A baker that suddenly decide to only sell moldy stale bread are going to go out of business. This can be delayed somewhat if the competetiors also only sell stale moldy bread. Once someone decide to corner the fresh bread market the stale moldy bread bakeries are going to struggle to stay in business.
Hollywood has spent way too much time and money producing what the customers do not want. They will be outcompeted by those that will provide the customers with what they ask for.

It's not that they couldn't hire them. It's that the other filmmaker's guilds won't endorse them, which creates problems with the other film workers unions if you try to pull in non-union workers. They can reject work, so directors, lighting crews, food services, etc. can reject work if your site is blacklisted.
Because a writer isn't part of the guild.
This was a big problem in the 1950s and 60s with the Red Scare, because this strong-arming was rife in the early studio system in Hollywood and TV.
This is also why some producers avoid LA and film for Music videos or UA-cam clips to get around the guilds.

I was watching a video from a Baseball channel called Baseball's Not Dead and in it (which talks about all the strikes the players had) the leader of the Baseball union said that they had the option to make half the players become free agents, but the leader of the union said no to it because making half the players in the league become free agents devalues the worth of individual players, making players lose money in the long term.
What I'm saying is and how this relates to the writers strike is that when they made every production have a requirement for writers, it's basically their equivalent lf making half the baseball players be free agents, thus in the long term devaluing the worth of individual writers. Which just shows the competency (or lack thereof) of the writers union.

The original Terminator. It was not expecting to make it as big as it did. In fact they were half expecting it to fail. Arnold almost didn't do the role because failed movies don't look good on star resumes. He did because he felt the movie was obscure enough it wouldn't effect him. We all know the results, it was a smash hit and practically defines Arnold's movie career. That is the power of a quality story.

@@Kino_pup Korean movies and anime seem to be doing pretty well.
And if the big Hollywood studios collapse, then smaller studios will rise again. It might sound strange to hear, but the film industry used to be much more diverse. High-budget films from the giant studios weren't the only films that got attention back in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Hollywood legends like Roger Corman made a career out of making low-budget movies.
People will always want scripted, produced content rather than used-made content. AI is good at making soulless, cliche work so it could replace the trash the big studios like Disney produce. But AI can't be the next Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Quinten Tarantino, etc.

In the new contract, on page 25, section 11, it has a strange exception to the minimum writer requirements: "This Paragraph M. does not apply when a single writer or team of writers is
employed to write all episodes.” So, if a production company hires a "team of writers" that will write the show, all of the minimum staffing requirements go away. In effect, this will reduce the number of writer jobs and seperate the writing duties from the studios onto independent teams.

It boils down to simple economics. The costs to produce a movie in Hollywood is more than the return on investment. Everything costs way to much. Covid and the strike allowed the studios to outsource writing and production outside of Hollywood. Which they realized was much cheaper. The agreements the studios made with the Unions are just a stop gap. They are leaving so they don't care what they gave them because it won't be an issue in a few years. Exactly what happened to the manufacturing industry in the US. Anyone could see it coming.

The primary two or three producers can **suggest** changes to a scrip, but they are **not supposed** to have authority to write things themselves. The on-set writer(s) and director are supposed to be the ones to do that, or the Exec Producers (the ones actually paying, not the EPs that are getting free credit). This is why Hollyweird is failing. They are allowing the people that are supposed to make sure that the production flows (catering, everyone needed on set that day is actually there, making sure props are ready, etc) to take over and push their agenda. I have been saying this for nearly six year, that the pretense that Producers are top management and capable of doing everything, will result in a collapse of the Weird and a mass redistribution out of Cali. so they can find people that are not more interested in pretending they are the the most important thing in the Universe. This is the Great Breakup, and return to normalcy.
EDIT - This will be accelerated when the Communistic Policies of Cali. result in crime spreading to the studios, sets, and their homes. When that happens, all the remaining talent will pack up and leave. This has already started to happen to a small degree, but will likely start making headlines in the next two years.

If you can’t have any competency in your Human Resources then your screwed. Sheeple will still ingest whatever is shoved in front of them but those with more discerning tastes have probably already noticed the downward slide of quality in a lot of mediums. I think your views on unions are a little too reductive. For tradesmen that work in a labor field where safety is a huge concern, having representation to mitigate a contractor demanding things that are unreasonable is a significant plus. For the artistic trades, I imagine it goes a long way in protecting people giving away work or signing garbage contracts for essentially free just to “make it.” To create a blanket statement that only the top benefit isn’t nuanced enough and it feels like a blanket statement to illustrate the point that you’re trying to make.

All the bad reboots and remakes are making a lot of people go back to the originals. This in turn is leading to them discovering other old shows and movies which are becoming more popular than the junk they are making today.

However, producing credits are linked to the inherent success of the show and its durability. Since most shows don't last more than 2 seasons at best, or movies barely make their production costs, the returns will be minimal.

Much as people hate AI taking the job of real talent... it will still be better structured than the "subversion of expectations" fanatics. It'll be equally soulless and badly written, but it will at least have a better plot than Rose Tico flying away to the side as Finn's about to have a character arc only to appear out of nowhere like she teleports for a stupid line to be delivered.

It also just takes waaaaaaay too long to make TV shows nowadays. Back when Lost was airing, there was only a gap of a few months between seasons and each season had 22 episodes. Now they release a 6-episode season and it's 5 years before the next season airs. The entire point of a TV show is that you can follow it up with more content easily. If you can only get a few seasons in before your viewers die of old age, you're doing it wrong.

There are two roads to success.
One, do something new and incredibly. It is a high risk, high reward route. You can win everything ort lose everything.
Two, do something well established and familiar, but do it really well. This is high effort, high reward route. Instead of betting on 100, you achieve success by doing things it slowly and incrementally.
    Each option has it merits.
There is no third, low skill/talent, barely any work being done, nonexistent work ethics, with enormous demands and expectations. This road is most popular among younger generation, mostly women nad non-whites. Having huge writing room, going far over budget and breaking every deadline, having very high expectations in terms of both income and amenities, while producing an utter shit.

Close, but there's a bit more complexity. And it starts LONG before the show is greenlit for production. Here's the deal--when they required minimum staffing of X writers, one area where they did that was for DEVELOPMENT "writers' rooms" for I think it was 8 or 10 writers for 10 weeks at least at minimum. Now consider the situation--a bigshot/producer/director/studio guy gets an idea and says "Hey, what if we tried to do a show about...X???" BEFORE the new contract, he and maybe a pal or two would have some meetings to kick it around and see if it made sense. If not? No biggie, and not a lot of money committed and let's move along to the next brainstorm. Little harm, no foul. BUT NOW with the NEW DEAL to even move SLIGHTLY forward, they have to commit to that 8 or 10 writers at those 10 weeks of minimum....EVEN IF the first or second meeting of this massively expensive brain trust decides "nope, it doesn't work" and they all disband but STILL GET PAID. That means for taking it even SLIGHTLY beyond the "what if?" stage is now something that comes with an ENORMOUS pricetag, and since the odds and experience say that MOST of these will NOT go forward, if we follow this rule we are spending a whole LOT for a whole lot of NOTHING. Notwithstanding Thomas Edison's famous quest for the right filament to make the bulb work and saying he didn't consider the over 100 metals and alloys he tried and failed with a "failure" but rather a "discovery of what won't work"....this is NUTS. Net-net? FEWER of those development rooms for 1, 2, 3, however many writers happen and thus less work AND less exploration that might lead to a HIT that runs for years, employing not just writers but of course actors and directors and producers and key grips and craft services folks and everyone else. Nice work, WGA! :)
