I hate that UA-cam is doing UA-cam things, but I do miss the video essays that were more common back in the day. Hopefully you can bring those back and it be a cheaper and easier way to keep the channel going
Yep. 💯
I assume he doesn't particularly want to do them for whatever reason(s). I assume among others, significantly more time and effort is required for such videos 🤷♂️
Agree, not only would it be nice to see that come back, but it'll definitely help with bringing down costs.
@@shu93129 I really don't think it takes more time and effort to sit down and talk about a subject you researched, over doing what they do in their current videos.

And I also agree that it needs to be done with Western Medieval depictions also!
Ann Boleyn was executed by a french swordsman at the order of Henry VIII. It took a single swing. Mary Queen of Scots was executed by ax at the order of Elizabeth I. It took at least 3 blows to take off her head.
Was that with an executioner sword? Cuz that thing was a massive slab of sharpened steel with no point designed specifically to decap in one blow better than a axe

Why are you here then if your only in it for the castle content@@rettbull9100
Same.
So a big and common misconception with the “flick” is that the purpose is to remove the blood from the blade, but the actual reason as to why they do it is to check the bamboo pin that connects the blades tang to the handle. Traditional Katanas used bamboo and sometimes metal pins to hold the weapon together, however the metal pin wasn’t used as often due to it shattering the tang inside the handle due to the tension. Bamboo pins were used the most due to how flexible they were and the shock absorption so the tang doesn’t shatter, the downside is the pin would wear down fast so after every fight they would do the “flick” to check if the blade feels loose or if it shakes even a little bit so they know to change the pin. So first they would do the “flick” to check the pin, then wipe the blade of the blood. Sheathing, it is easier to use the other hand as a guide to help sheathe the blade, but another major upside to sheathing it the “traditional” way is since you’re using the other hand to guide you can keep your eyes on the battle field and stay alert. Now I’m not here to say “OoOoh kAtAnaS aRe tHe bEsT” it’s statistically not true due to the small guard and single edge, but there are few things that I see in some of the videos I’ve seen you guys do get wrong and I don’t blame ya and totally understandable since you guys specialize in European weapons, and personally I love Chinese weapons. Anyways, that’s enough yapping from me, love you guys and if you read this far thank you, I really do hope this channel doesn’t go under ‘cause I always love some good sword content.

@@PROVOCATEURSK ?
I believe the purpose of the "blood flick"/spin was more intended to test the integrity of the fit and finish of the sword after a fight, since during combat the bamboo pins could crack, creating a rattle you could hear when you flicked/spun the sword.
@johanpire1413why the space?
This is precisely correct. It never had anything to do with flicking blood off your blade, if you wanted to clean your blade you would simply wipe it with a cloth carried specifically for the purpose. Or, in extremis, on your sleeve
Have you ever broken a sword in practice? You're instantly aware the blade isn't firmly attached to the hilt anymore, and if you do spin or flick it you'll probably send the blade flying.
@@kasauerkrautimgulaschProbably the same reason you didn’t capitalize the W.
@@JerehmiaBoaz While that is true, Japanese swords are built fundamentally differently than Western swords - using only a single, bamboo pin to hold the blade in the handle as opposed to multiple steel pins or any other kind of fitting. It's quite possible for that pin to become dislodged or damaged enough that the blade is still sort of being held in, but has become wobbly and a bit insecure.
I expected the blade to cut through and wasn't disappointed
The blood flicking was a little less effective than i anticipated but I didn't expect a full clean. I expected more blood reduction for wipe off, it's not an Anime or Hollywood its reality

From my very limited understanding, the sword flick mentioned at 4:27 is called chiburui and was/is a thing in some teachings. But wasn't effective on it's own as is depicted in pop culture at removing blood, as a sword still needed proper care and cleaning. There are theories as to why it is done ranging from spiritual to function to showmanship.
Chiburi true purpose is to maintain zanshin after you dealt with an opponent.
If nothing else happens, then you wipe the sword and sheathe it.

Look up a clip of Cao Cao trolling Yuan Shao about 10 episodes after Lu Bu dies. It's amazing.
The movement before sheathing has a name meaning "to throw away the blood". In Shinkendo, which is a modernized Japanese martial art that uses a katana, it's not about cleaning the sword as much as it is about preparing to sheath the sword. You do the same thing every single time and have it drilled into you so you don't risk cutting yourself with your sword while sheathing it. "The most dangerous thing we do in Shinkendo is draw and sheathe the sword. If you die, it will be because you screwed up while doing one of those things." That's what I was taught.
No no no no, it can't possibly be anything other than Western sword arts just being superior to Eastern sword arts... la la la la la.... If you can't tell there's a heavy dose of sarcasm injected into my comment.
I usually holster my uh defense mechanism. Not really a scabbard sheat sia whatever else blade holders are called. That's probably just me.
Is wiping the blade down but rubbing along the inside of the elbow a real thing or was that something metal rising rising thought up?
@@PJDAltamirus0425idk I wouldn't want the blood on my clothes more so than the blade lol.
@@PJDAltamirus0425 Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure the Samurai carried a cloth like knights and other soldiers and warriors. And I know the Samurai fought with spear and bow, but their swords were especially symbolic, so I’d assume they’d have cloth with them to wipe any potential blood should they use it.
I think it isn't the sweep of the sword that helps rid the blade of blood, it is how quickly you stop the blade once it is in motion. Imagine a flick of the wrist that threatens to hurt said wrist as you stop it. Think of it like cracking a whip. It is the change of direction that causes the tip to break the sound barrier. Also the polish of the blade would be as mirror like as possible and would help a bit too.
Fun fact: you say shōgun as sho-o-goon. In Japanese, the length you'd say a sound can completely change the definition of the word. Ō is a long "oh" sound, so you'd say it twice as long as you would a normal o.
neat
I'm sorry to hear that Shad. You guys have been a long time favorite of mine.
One of those polls appeared for me in the corner of UA-cam earlier today asking something along the lines of "Have you experienced any problems with UA-cam lately?" One of the options for a potential "Problem" was "Too many Subscription videos in my home feed." Apparently being recommended videos from people you're subscribed to is seen as a problem by them. I have my home feed disabled so I ONLY ever look in my subscriptions for videos.
I feel like your only hope to get blood off your blade without a simple wipe is going to have to be far more centripetal than a simple flick. I imagine if you make a large enough arc motion you could manage to pull the blood into a larger drop allowing SOME of it to come off. Getting all of it off though... that is going to be absurdly hard to the point where surely wiping it is easier.
I’m getting a ton of your new and old videos and I’ve been even putting it on in the background just to boost you as much as possible. Long live the Shad!

for the Chiburui, i turn to seki sensei. hes like 1) when you cut someone, the blood tends to come after so you dont really get any blood on the blade, 2) it doesnt shake it off and 3) its probably more for the sake of performance due to street displays etc.

You are not the only one this is happing to. I have never gotten a notification from Everyone I subscribe to.
Notifications and subs are different things. The bell is for notifications and you need to have them enabled on your phone to get them as well.
I have not nor will I ever choose to get notifications for a channel. No video is that important that I have to get a notification that some channel I follow has posted something new. No harm in catching a new upload a few hours, days, weeks, or months after. People need to chill on how attached they are to this stuff.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded with an axe, in what was a demonstration of how hard it can be to chop off a head. The first blow hit her in the back of the head; the second hit the neck, but the head remained attached by a strip of flesh; the executioner then sliced (some sources say "sawed", indicating that it looked clumsy) the head off with the axe blade, and lifted it high. Anne Boleyn, however, was executed with a sword, by an expert brought in from France, who did the job with a single stroke.
After a decapitation, cleaning the blade is a must before sheathing it to keep rust off.
How about filling your scabbard with crust
i feel as if talking about shoguns/samuria sheathing their bloodied blades after killing someone will not do damage to the blade right away if anyhting it will take it maybe a day or two to rust into the blade enough to make the blade fragile but for what i could tell from that scene is probably by the time screen goes balc to show the next part is when he probably cleaned the blade from the blade and resharpened it
Bro thought you'd given up
Don't stop brother 💪
Thank you guys for making the content you do, and I like the way you handled the bonus content at the end. Well done.
I think the point Nate brought up that Tyranth and Shad ignored is right, flicking was just used to get the worst of it off. It could keep whatever you use to wipe it from getting soaked as much
how much blood are you wiping that you're worried about oversaturating your rag?!
They still wiped the blade before sheathing it, the flick is for added insult, as in their blood wasn't worthy of the blade that cut them down...
people love just making up all kinds shit.
Hopefully this gets through the algorithm's thick skull.
Also, I like how Shad still admitted weebness, just not as much as Tyranth.

I made sure to hit the bell ages ago. And I love your content and try to watch the videos as they launch
I thought being able to decapitate a person head off with a single swing also to me seemed impossible, since the blade would struggle with bone. I noticed those minor details themselve, I do like later in Shogun that the main Lord character mentioned in past, that for him didn't take a single swing to decapitate a head.
Row Row Fight the Power!
Commenting so UA-cam learns a lesson
The chiburi ( cleansing of the blade) isn't just for getting the blood off the blade. It's sort of a moment of closure between yourself and the person or people you've just killed.
Some of the movement comes from little ways to get the sword out of the body and then the closure /cleansing.
I am happy to say that I was recommended this video and that I just realised that I wasn't a member... that has now been changed as I have many times enjoyed your videoes.
Recently in UA-camland, I keep getting recommendations for channels and topics I have absolutely no interest in. My only solution is blocking those channels but YT algorithms seem to really want me to look at video game channels and doesn't care how many game channels I block.
I got your patreon, good stuff
In terms of sheathing, I doubt people would want to eye ball the sheath in a battle field so they would like to keep the eye on the surrounding while placing the blade back in.
There is an old saying, you are in the setting until you are safely back home, basically meaning you do not want to drop guard until you are back into the safe spot.
Eyeballing the blade back into the sheath in a potential battle zone does not fit into that persepective.
Great content as usual. I sure hope the numbers go up! Will be sad to see this channel fall off :(

@@korstmahler You know, I saw an old map of New Zealand a little while ago, and it had the island's named "North Island", for "North Island" (no surprises there), "Middle Island" for "South Island" and "South Island" for "Stewart Island".
I guess it doesn't really matter though, because the 3 inhabitants of "South Island" would hardly kick up a fuss.
@Shad. A katana is not a hacking weapon, it is not an arming sword. It is a _slicing_ weapon, you drive it with your body motion (ashi (foot movement) has heavy emphasis in Katana bujutsu)
For Tyranth, try pulling the whole saya forward as you break the seal with the thumb (as usual careful not to push the thumb on the blade or bring the blade up to the hand), and drive the left leg back and drive the saya backwards, as a counter-balance to the draw with the right hand - the draw is shorter and the right hand is focusing on rotating the blade and slicing motion, driving against the stiffness of the shoulders yanking the saya back. Generally the right hand is coming up to the forward position as the saya is moving forward, the right also guarding against the enemy grabbing the blade. The whole motion when timed right doesn't get the tsuka much further forward, but positions for a much faster and stronger cut.
It also brings into being a much cleaner slice. The full draw shown in this video is slower, and tends to result in a more Northern European "hacking" motion, which can lead to blade damage. The damage from compression effect on the fine edge of the blade, when a slicing motion runs along the edge of the blade opening rather than cleaving the leading edge.
Likewise, remember you're trained to be moving and walking as part of the flowing motion, not standing and striking rigidly - consider it like the follow-through of a golf shot; sure the ball has left by then but part of the body energy has to go in certain directions to get the proper slicing motion.
Cheers. Love the show. - And yes, even though I'm subscribed this only showed up on the fourth UA-cam window I opened this evening, and on the second screen of the recommended videos on the right of the screen - further down than some 5 month old videos and after a bunch of channels I'm not subscribed too :( Perhaps an email list for when a new episode goes up?
Love Shad videos.
If you hold a rag when you pinch the blade to sheathe it, you clean the blade in that same motion. Maybe that's why the technique exists? Practice swords aren't bloody, so they don't use the rag, but the motion is the same.

I was pleasantly surprised by the result of the first cut!
I’m seeing all the new videos pop up in my recommended videos to watch every time I open up UA-cam on my phone. However, when I see the length of the video it doesn’t immediately make me want to watch it (nothing wrong with long format videos personally) when it comes to my viewing habits I tend to go for shorter length videos 8 times out of 10, but on the rare occasions that I have more time to watch something I will go back and watch them at my convenience.
I really enjoy watching the videos you have made for this channel and would be saddened if the channel were to go away. Keep up the good work and hope you can find a way to keep this channel going ❤️.
Another great one, shad! Lovin' the content! I'm sorry youtube sucks, but hopefully shadlands takes off. Signed up for the patreon a week ago. :)
Love you vids Shad, I hope you get through this tough time and I am looking forward to more videos in the future.
Hiya! So one thing I was taught with the sheathing part. Is once you feel the tip go you also bring the sheath up. Bringing both hands together. The idea being Instead of looking at it, you can keep your eyes up incase someone runs or jumps up or comes after you. As your hands will naturally find each other. Same for the draw. Your one hand pulls back as you draw out. But Ive never actually timed if it was faster. But made sense to not take your eyes away from enimies haha.

It’s a great test done by the shad team, it shows how guys, who aren’t really familiar with the thematic of Katana and the traditions behind it, trying their best to figure stuff out.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on other reviews/websites, but it is worth mentioning. Blood and sea water share many chemical similarities. You would not want to keep sea water on your blade, so neither would you want to leave blood on a blade.
