So a big and common misconception with the “flick” is that the purpose is to remove the blood from the blade, but the actual reason as to why they do it is to check the bamboo pin that connects the blades tang to the handle. Traditional Katanas used bamboo and sometimes metal pins to hold the weapon together, however the metal pin wasn’t used as often due to it shattering the tang inside the handle due to the tension. Bamboo pins were used the most due to how flexible they were and the shock absorption so the tang doesn’t shatter, the downside is the pin would wear down fast so after every fight they would do the “flick” to check if the blade feels loose or if it shakes even a little bit so they know to change the pin. So first they would do the “flick” to check the pin, then wipe the blade of the blood. Sheathing, it is easier to use the other hand as a guide to help sheathe the blade, but another major upside to sheathing it the “traditional” way is since you’re using the other hand to guide you can keep your eyes on the battle field and stay alert. Now I’m not here to say “OoOoh kAtAnaS aRe tHe bEsT” it’s statistically not true due to the small guard and single edge, but there are few things that I see in some of the videos I’ve seen you guys do get wrong and I don’t blame ya and totally understandable since you guys specialize in European weapons, and personally I love Chinese weapons. Anyways, that’s enough yapping from me, love you guys and if you read this far thank you, I really do hope this channel doesn’t go under ‘cause I always love some good sword content.

The movement before sheathing has a name meaning "to throw away the blood". In Shinkendo, which is a modernized Japanese martial art that uses a katana, it's not about cleaning the sword as much as it is about preparing to sheath the sword. You do the same thing every single time and have it drilled into you so you don't risk cutting yourself with your sword while sheathing it. "The most dangerous thing we do in Shinkendo is draw and sheathe the sword. If you die, it will be because you screwed up while doing one of those things." That's what I was taught.

I think it isn't the sweep of the sword that helps rid the blade of blood, it is how quickly you stop the blade once it is in motion. Imagine a flick of the wrist that threatens to hurt said wrist as you stop it. Think of it like cracking a whip. It is the change of direction that causes the tip to break the sound barrier. Also the polish of the blade would be as mirror like as possible and would help a bit too.

Notifications and subs are different things. The bell is for notifications and you need to have them enabled on your phone to get them as well.
I have not nor will I ever choose to get notifications for a channel. No video is that important that I have to get a notification that some channel I follow has posted something new. No harm in catching a new upload a few hours, days, weeks, or months after. People need to chill on how attached they are to this stuff.

Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded with an axe, in what was a demonstration of how hard it can be to chop off a head. The first blow hit her in the back of the head; the second hit the neck, but the head remained attached by a strip of flesh; the executioner then sliced (some sources say "sawed", indicating that it looked clumsy) the head off with the axe blade, and lifted it high. Anne Boleyn, however, was executed with a sword, by an expert brought in from France, who did the job with a single stroke.

i feel as if talking about shoguns/samuria sheathing their bloodied blades after killing someone will not do damage to the blade right away if anyhting it will take it maybe a day or two to rust into the blade enough to make the blade fragile but for what i could tell from that scene is probably by the time screen goes balc to show the next part is when he probably cleaned the blade from the blade and resharpened it

I thought being able to decapitate a person head off with a single swing also to me seemed impossible, since the blade would struggle with bone. I noticed those minor details themselve, I do like later in Shogun that the main Lord character mentioned in past, that for him didn't take a single swing to decapitate a head.

The chiburi ( cleansing of the blade) isn't just for getting the blood off the blade. It's sort of a moment of closure between yourself and the person or people you've just killed.
Some of the movement comes from little ways to get the sword out of the body and then the closure /cleansing.

In terms of sheathing, I doubt people would want to eye ball the sheath in a battle field so they would like to keep the eye on the surrounding while placing the blade back in.
There is an old saying, you are in the setting until you are safely back home, basically meaning you do not want to drop guard until you are back into the safe spot.
Eyeballing the blade back into the sheath in a potential battle zone does not fit into that persepective.

@Shad. A katana is not a hacking weapon, it is not an arming sword. It is a _slicing_ weapon, you drive it with your body motion (ashi (foot movement) has heavy emphasis in Katana bujutsu)
For Tyranth, try pulling the whole saya forward as you break the seal with the thumb (as usual careful not to push the thumb on the blade or bring the blade up to the hand), and drive the left leg back and drive the saya backwards, as a counter-balance to the draw with the right hand - the draw is shorter and the right hand is focusing on rotating the blade and slicing motion, driving against the stiffness of the shoulders yanking the saya back. Generally the right hand is coming up to the forward position as the saya is moving forward, the right also guarding against the enemy grabbing the blade. The whole motion when timed right doesn't get the tsuka much further forward, but positions for a much faster and stronger cut.
It also brings into being a much cleaner slice. The full draw shown in this video is slower, and tends to result in a more Northern European "hacking" motion, which can lead to blade damage. The damage from compression effect on the fine edge of the blade, when a slicing motion runs along the edge of the blade opening rather than cleaving the leading edge.
Likewise, remember you're trained to be moving and walking as part of the flowing motion, not standing and striking rigidly - consider it like the follow-through of a golf shot; sure the ball has left by then but part of the body energy has to go in certain directions to get the proper slicing motion.
Cheers. Love the show. - And yes, even though I'm subscribed this only showed up on the fourth UA-cam window I opened this evening, and on the second screen of the recommended videos on the right of the screen - further down than some 5 month old videos and after a bunch of channels I'm not subscribed too :( Perhaps an email list for when a new episode goes up?

If you hold a rag when you pinch the blade to sheathe it, you clean the blade in that same motion. Maybe that's why the technique exists? Practice swords aren't bloody, so they don't use the rag, but the motion is the same.

I’m seeing all the new videos pop up in my recommended videos to watch every time I open up UA-cam on my phone. However, when I see the length of the video it doesn’t immediately make me want to watch it (nothing wrong with long format videos personally) when it comes to my viewing habits I tend to go for shorter length videos 8 times out of 10, but on the rare occasions that I have more time to watch something I will go back and watch them at my convenience.
I really enjoy watching the videos you have made for this channel and would be saddened if the channel were to go away. Keep up the good work and hope you can find a way to keep this channel going ❤️.

Hiya! So one thing I was taught with the sheathing part. Is once you feel the tip go you also bring the sheath up. Bringing both hands together. The idea being Instead of looking at it, you can keep your eyes up incase someone runs or jumps up or comes after you. As your hands will naturally find each other. Same for the draw. Your one hand pulls back as you draw out. But Ive never actually timed if it was faster. But made sense to not take your eyes away from enimies haha.
