  • Archive Moto presents *GRIT*, a three part documentary series looking at the history of one of America’s most infamous and sensational sports, motorcycle *Board Track Racing*. Often conflated with carnival thrill shows and the massive wooden speedways of the 1920s, America's original timber race tracks, called motordromes, were dangerous and exhilarating saucers where the toughest of the tough went elbow to elbow for a taste of the glory and the gold. For just 5 short years between 1909 and 1914, only 26 of these perilous stadiums were ever built, many having only hosted motorcycle races for a season or two. Still, inside their steeply banked walls, heroic pioneers of a thrilling and often deadly sport captivated the country and cemented a legacy, and mythology which still makes the hairs on the backs of necks stand tall.
Enjoy this trailer for *GRIT*, the first of three parts will be released soon.

Sometimes I wonder, if I lived in those days, would I go watch these events live or abstain from doing so because of guilt for supporting and propagating such a deadly sport? 🤔

Death and danger weren’t as shrouded then, more just a part of life, but at the same time, these guys were excited to be there, it was an honest living, and a lucrative one at that. Auto races were still fairly out of reach, and these motordromes were the ticket to have in the towns that hosted a saucer. The bikes got real quick real fast, and the tracks steeper and faster, by the time folks realized it had become too crazy the sport moved on within about a year and a half. If you were lucky enough to have caught a race you witnessed something I don’t think we will ever see again. An exciting blip in the history books. We would have all been there I bet, because we are all here now, digging up the history, and it would have been wild!
