KH1 is goated. I used to always prefer KH2, however, I ended up doing a Level 1 run in both games recently. When I was playing KH2 I quickly noticed how KH1 had so much more charm and depth to it especially with the level design, story telling, and memorable fights. What a magical game and franchise at that.
Seriously, how am I getting recommended this now? And how does this video not have more views??? This video was REALLY well made. I enjoyed the presentation, and this gave me a huge insight to two of my favorite games of all time! I felt engaged and intrigued throughout the entire video, and I love that. You earned a sub from me, that’s for sure! Keep up the good work, man :)
"1's story is ok, while 2 is a step up in almost every single way" I whole heartedly disagree. I think the writing in kh1 is of the best in the series.
Personally I love KH1 to pieces. It’s my favourite video game of all time ever! There’s just something so magical about it. Especially the original ps2 version. Final mix version does tweak a few things but the 2002 release right out of the game is still incredible to this day! KH2 in some aspects feels too easy by comparison given how much fun and challenging the kh1 combat is.
A well done video, for i just discovered. Even though i still prefer KH 2 over 1, your points are really relevant and made me took a better approach on this serie. Perhaps now i will enjoy more playing KH 1 thanks to you. Keep going man
You raise many good points and even though I’m a big Kingdom Hearts fan, I have to admit KH2 really skimped on KH1’s good qualities like platforming and hidden goodies. For example, the atmosphere of Hollow Bastion was way less thrilling and terrifying in the sequel. Granted, the heroes had been doing a lot of restoration work but it felt like a big part of the charm had been lost. Just my opinion, of course. Still, I enjoyed many points in KH2 like the reaction commands, Sora’s growth, Roxas’s character arc, and Drive Forms. Plus, the Gummi Ship battles were way less boring. Excellent work on your analysis! I still enjoyed both of these games and believe they were equally flawed and fantastic.
I highly disagree with people who say that KHII has a better story than KH1. KH1's story is tight, compact, well-paced, and consistent. KHII's story is none of those. KHII is also where the series's modern problems with BS plot twists started. KHII is a good game but I also think it's overrated in some regard. There are many things KH1 does way better, like atmosphere and world-building. There's a purity and sophistication to KH1 that KHII (and the rest of the series as a whole) lacks.
Kh1 will always hold a special place in my heart. The pure mystique of the game and simplicity of combat and story at the time was the beauty of it all. So much attention to detail and interesting level design. They don’t make games like it anymore. Kh2 was memorable for me solely because of how far the story developed and I hadnt played chain of memories yet. Overall I think 1 was near perfect and 2 was great but not as good as 1.
I did NOT like Atlantica in KHI. The controls are fucked and you have no idea where to go much of the time. I was glad it was only minigames in KHII, as cringe as they were.
I was fine with Atlantica, but I was *not* fine with the inability to guard, dodge maneuver, counter, or even use super attacks. Like how do you just nullify all of that 😓
1 is also my favorite even though I like 2. 1's level design which incentivises exploration in these fun worlds is much more fun than 2's box level worlds. Glad to hear you also enjoy 1's defensive combat. Smacking projectiles back at enemies never gets old
You can still smack projectiles right back at enemies and lots more of attacks in Kingdom Hearts 2 but you also have the option to be aggressive I've come off playing bloodborne so I much prefer Kingdom Hearts 2 then waiting around for the enemy to stop attacking so I can attack in Kingdom Hearts 1
A fellow KH1 lover... such culture. Now we are three. (I found Reg Pat a year ago.) I think all KH games are very well loved, but KH2 fans are so pushy when it comes to their favorite game being a pride to the series, so I think most people don't bother even trying to explain if they feel differently and just accept the consensus "KH2 is better". It's just hard to deny the polish and fluidity. KH2 has a recycled loop that feeds into itself endlessly, whereas 1 and 3 have you back off to play defense or you get blindsided. People love a game with a buttery smooth streamlined loop. It makes them feel like they're doing more than just mashing all the right buttons in circles... personally I like a game with more strategy and player expression. I still prefer 1, because combat feels weighty and impactful, but 3 gives us the best of both worlds, with both fast combos and more defensive repositioning from tons of mobility options. The Keyblade Forms feel like more specific Drive Forms, with swapping balanced with fewer abilities to incentivize positioning and window strategy over bullying mobs.
In 2:45 he talks about worlds that you don’t save, I never knew abandoning the worlds was a legitimate option, this is the first time I’ve heard of this?? Has anyone else seen than before?
KHII and III are some of my favourite games because of Critical mode and the data battles. KHI is just too clunky to support these, but there is a mod called Critical Remix that completely rebalances combat, even removing levelling entirely. KHI is still better than the spin-offs because it gets the fundamentals right. Your options in combat are all useful and balanced, and gaining abilities happens naturally by levelling up. There isn't some tedious, grindy system that practically requires a strategy guide.
Great comparison! I played through KHI again for the story and was honestly really frustrated with the platforming and combat, especially through the first half of the game. I don't remember it feeling so clunky as a kid. I played KHII way more as a kid because the combat was so much more developed, the story was more mature and complex, the gummy ship creation system and levels were actually fun, and Organization XIII was an amazing group of antagonists. I think some some of the love for KHII came from me being more into anime than disney growing up, and i preferred hack-and-slash games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta to RPGs. I played the latter for the story way more than for the combat system. Drives felt like transformations that reminded me of shows like Dragon Ball Z. Organization XIII reminded me of the Espada from Bleach, which I was obsessed with as a kid. Interactions with a bunch of Final Fantasy characters in one place was really cool. Even though I wasn't a big RPG player, I loved FFX and FFVII. I'm glad they dumbed down Sephiroth in KHII so I could actually beat him, and seeing cloud and sephiroth fight was awesome, especially considering FF Advant Children and KHII were released pretty close together and I was huge fan of both pieces of work. Leveling up in KHII was faster and made way more sense. I wasn't too into summons in either game. So leveling drives was cool with me. The fact that I could visit the pirates of the carribbean world was one of my favorite aspects. KHII was and still is my all time favorite single player game. I'm surprised some many people prefer the first one!
while I disagree with a lot of the points you make because of my personal approach towards the games I can still acknowledge that the video is really well made and I can see the effort you put into it and while I like I said dont share that opinion I can still respect it. Keep up the good work I realy appreciate content like this. ( I totaly agree that the form grinding tho, thankfully there are only two forms that you realy need to grind for so I uasualy just ditch them on most playthroughs.) ps: I apologize for my bad english since iam not a native speaker and its midnight right now. :)
I love KH2 the most but I agree with these things. I love KH1 too but the camera and Atlantica piss me off every time I play it and a good camera is really important. I love the games for different reasons. As someone that loves lvl 1 playthroughs I strongly prefer KH2 since KH1's lvl 1 is so boring, you don't get any fun abilities and you basically deal no damage with normal attacks. KH2 still gives you all the important abilities on lvl 1 and has actual good scaling. KH3's lvl 1 scaling is also terrible but at least you get abilities in that game.
How have I never seen this video before?!, it’s so good and very well thought out. I definitely agree with most of your points too. While I enjoy all the KH games (KH 2 probably being my favorite one, but KH being my second favorite) KH 1 is probably one of the only KH games that I truly want to keep replying because it’s story is so simple yet engaging, and like you said it seems each of the Disney worlds actually incorporate into the story in a more meaningful way. Also unlike KH 3 (which is too easy for my liking), some parts of KH 1 can be hard as nails which makes it so much more rewarding to beat certain bosses and levels (the final game boss, Ansem, had me grinding for so long and once I beat him I literally felt like I was a true key blade master). While KH 1 is definitely not great in certain ways (some levels are bland with not much to do) I think it still holds up as a great game by itself because of how unique it is and the combat, while not my favorite of the series, is still a joy to play! Also KH 1 just has a certain charm to it that I haven’t seen in a lot of the later games.
I recently just finished most of the KH series (except for back cover and the other X games) and what I find interesting about the series is that there are a good amount of things that I don't like but things that I do like. The only thing that makes me from quitting some of the KH games is the story.
You know I have a little problem with Sora character on kh2 to kh3 he’s too joyful, gullible and never taking serious to see the enemy that’s seem out of his character but expect for kh1 Sora to rcom like he more responsibilities, mature, fun not too fun, serious and related.
The scale of the worlds is really cool but they don't feel very fun to explore because I can't really remember there being any rewards that stood out for me adventuring around a little. I thought Monsters Inc world was really cool and the POC one but the others I was very meh on. The combat was just okay for me not as fun as 1 or 2 I'd probably have to replay 3 again to remember more haha
@@JayEmm I really enjoyed the combat in KH3, I thought it felt very Anime esc, really cool. But I gotta agree with you with the worlds. Sure, the worlds had a big wow factor since they were big and impressive, but despite enjoying the worlds a lot I don't really remember a lot from them unlike KH2.
Until caverns of rememberance drive forms aren't necessary for most fight most of my recent casual run on critical I wasn't using drive forms not cause I was holding myself back but mainly cause I forgot they existed cause base sora is kinda op if you know what abilities to equip
Dude, I definitely prefer Kingdom Hearts 1 over Kingdom Hearts 2. I have tried multiple times to finish KH2 and I have never been able to (it doesn't keep my interest), while KH1 I have completed 3 times! One big thing I disagree with you about is the story though, I think one of the major reasons I can't complete KH2 is because the story is so much worse than KH1. Being needlessly convoluted and cryptic does not equal good story telling! lol Great video man.
Ik this is probably not a popular opinion but i got to play kh2 recently after finishing 1 and while i feel the level design isnt as platform heavy and a little lighter on it, i still felt like it was fun traveling these worlds. Its was also cool how all of them still FELT like worlds when i was venturing through them even with the linearity. Me personally i just think kh1 and 2 are both about equally fun in different ways world wise.
ngl i didn't like the tarzan world design, like there was this cutsene and when it ends you are staring at vines. what are you supposed to do? turn fucking around and climb these background looking vines. yes i like exploring but the worlds being so open meant that i often went the wrong way.
@@JayEmm kh1 is probably the game where i got lost the most and heard most about people getting lost. Wich isn't that big a deal if you replay but playing first time can make you like the game less
Slide abilities shouldn't exist. It just makes people constantly slide to go faster when it doesn't even make sense. As a gameplay mechanic it should just be slide of dodge roll. And that should have a strong cool down after using it so it doesn't get slammed to run faster
I would say kh2 is my favorite. I recently beat kh1, and havent beaten kh2 yet, but my first ever time playing a video game was at my babysitter's house, playing kh2 on her grandson's ps3. (granted i never beat the roxas segment and hardly even knew who sora was) Going back to it now just feels so special to me and all warm inside, when to me kh1 felt like a slow dragged out game with too many tedious bosses and filler. All of that being said, I also see why you prefer kh1.
Great video! 100% agree with the statement regarding the level design! Even as a kid I realized that KH 2 felt really linear on the story progression side which after a while kinda bores me even though I was really excited when I can finally play it for the first time. At first im not interested at all in playing KH1 due to how people say the story is very basic, but I started missing the feeling of KH games so I decided to try it out. Turns out I really liked it to the point of it being my favorite in the series, even though its not my first(Ive finished BBS, CoM and KH2 before). Imo the reason that the cutscenes are more enjoyable to watch besides being more significant to the plot, it feels far more rewarding after solving the puzzles and figured out what to do with our own effort, compared to the KH2 experience which doesnt require almost no thinking at all to progress. KH2's linearity in the progression isnt bad for its genre, its just not as interactive and rewarding as KH1's experience.
KH2 had great potential, but it completely lost momentum after Roxas’ prologue. The big battle at Hollow Bastion was great and TWTNW was super cool, but the poorly done Disney worlds brought the game down horribly. KH1 was a consistent package that took a lot of hit or miss risks, but as a whole worked out wonderfully. Still, I appreciate KH2 for introducing Roxas and Twilight Town. And sad to say, but KH3 faired worse than KH2 in my eyes with the exception of the Toy Story and PotC worlds. Revisiting a lively Twilight Town was neat, even if it was a lot smaller map-wise. Awesome video!
Just to add, I really wished the series had turned out better as a whole. Like, the trilogy (if that was the original plan after 1) should’ve been wrapped up a long time ago. Maybe another side game similar to CoM in between 2 and 3 at most, but yikes this whole adventure did 8 loops and back for almost two decades. I say this out of love for the original experience I had back in ‘02. It started out so well.
It's funny cause the reason why you prefer KH1 is the reason why I dislike KH1 (except for the exploration point) 1. The stories of all the world is too basic and Sora is just too happy. 2. I dislike the lvl design because everything is a maze. I almost lost 2 hours in all world because I'm lost. There is just no indication of where to go 3. I understand the fact you prefer the defensive play style of KH1 but I like the offensive gameplay in KH2 and damn, the drive form are my favorite things in KH2. Ps : Sorry for the bad English, I'm French 😅
I love KH2 but the fact that the events of chain of memories are only blatantly referenced does kind of get me the wrong way. I mean I get Sora forgot his memories of castle oblivion but there could've been a little more context to it...
There is 1 thing i love about 1 The magic upgrades I skipped 1 world (Monstro) and lost 1 WHOLE spell in the entire game And the upgrades you get them with things like boss fights and sadly Poo's World
I just finished playing KH1 for the first time ever, did COM & 358 movies, now I’m on 2. The only real problem I had with KH1 was the fucking camera, other than that I loved it. The gummi missions were kind of annoying, but KH2 for me is such a major improvement in every way. The games are so essential to eachother it’s hard for me to put them against eachother, without KH1 then KH2 story isn’t as good, without KH2 KH1 has a huge cliffhanger and ends a story with great potential
I mean...It’s no surprise that you aren’t going to memorize the patterns of enemies in KH2 if you only play KH1. Is it really all that surprising that you don’t remember every aspect about a game that you haven’t touched in, in your own words, 7 years?
I love the first because it doesn’t tell you where to go. You have to figure that crap out on your own and there’s quite a few secrets and exploration, while the 2nd is pretty linear as far as exploration and the worlds feel too open and boring.
Everyone complains about atlantica in kh1, and I just made a magic specialized run not too much ago, and atlantica was actually fun (thunder blizzard and cure is the only things you need to clear the world). the only downside was ursula's final battle, but with gravity you can cut down a lot of the beggining of the fight
Meanwhile I'm just sitting here 15 hours into my KH2 game (Halloween Town) waiting for the game to actually pick up and get good while KH1 started out good... There's literally _nothing_ to do but just walk forward to the next hand holding side mission. Was about to play KH2 when you talked about all the worlds I still have to slog through and a voice in my head whined "I oan' wanna!"
I prefer the gameplay in KH1. I hated the idea of forms in KH2 and what really annoyed me was how they took away Sora's dodge and locked it behind a stupid form.
I like kh2 better. Kh1 for me was really boring and easy. I prefer the superior movement and combat system of kh2. (Gotta admit tho kh1 definitely had a better story/charm)
Yeah sorry I just replayd Kingdom Hearts 1 while the attention to level design and interaction is great there simply isn't enough of it and a lot of it is padded by tedious bosses or having to go back to the world and the item not being worth going back to the world for. I much prefer Kingdom Hearts 2 rewarding you after completing tough encounters instead of tedious unbalanced clunky combat and then I have to search around every nook and cranny of a level for something cool. Just running around in Kingdom Hearts 2 with the skateboard is more fun than I had exploring anything in Kingdom Hearts 1 especially on replays Also disagree with you on the bosses most of Kingdom Hearts bosses are terrible where you have to run away when they charge up some attack and then just evade for what feels like 30 seconds until you can actually hit them again Your companions are useless except for healing you in Kingdom Hearts 1 Kingdom Hearts 2 lets you proactively respond to everything not just with reaction commands but also with parrying attacks and reflecting projectiles back at enemies just like before Edit: spelling
I have just recently replayed through both KH1 & 2 and man I found KH2 is just superior. Combat in KH1 is way more clunky, a couple of the worlds are just plain frustrating to play through (Deep Jungle and Atlantica) and the story while good is just pretty plain.
I love KH1 but goddamn did I hate the final bosses. Though admittedly it's kinda my fault they were hard cause I never used block. Edit: I also liked how open the worlds were in KH1.
idk why i got this recommended 2 years later lol kh2 is better in my opinion but i definitely agree that kh1 is extremely underrated! you should make more in depth videos on games like kh i can see you going places
I don't get how people can put KH2 so high up on the pedestal. I've played them all countless times and coming back to KH2 after KH1 feels terrible, even the first time playing it i was struggling to finish it. Story pacing is terrible, the worlds are lackluster, camera is a mess, the game is incredibly easy on all difficulties, some things like summons and party members are made completely useless, sure they added a lot of combat stuff but its a mixed bag of good and bad. In the first game it was all timing, in the second its possible but will mostly come down to mashing attack and reaction commands wether you like it or not. EDIT: I finished the video and you actually agree with me on most points, i thought i was the only one that felt like that. Good video nonetheless
It's not incredibly easy on proud I died early on to a couple nobodies who can two shot you when you play as Roxas Summons are actually useful this time whereas in the first game the only useful one was mostly Tinkerbell and sometimes Mushu everything else was a waste of MP Way more variety in combat moves and enemy variety Not just spamming X Fireball and cure

I agree with EVERYTHING you said
So now when you've experienced Kingdom Hearts 3, what's your stance and thoughts about it? How does it compare to your opinion now?
The scale of the worlds is really cool but they don't feel very fun to explore because I can't really remember there being any rewards that stood out for me adventuring around a little. I thought Monsters Inc world was really cool and the POC one but the others I was very meh on. The combat was just okay for me not as fun as 1 or 2 I'd probably have to replay 3 again to remember more haha
@@JayEmm I really enjoyed the combat in KH3, I thought it felt very Anime esc, really cool. But I gotta agree with you with the worlds. Sure, the worlds had a big wow factor since they were big and impressive, but despite enjoying the worlds a lot I don't really remember a lot from them unlike KH2.
this came out right on when kh3 released! what are the chances of that? Almost 4 years ago...
Being needlessly convoluted and cryptic does not equal good story telling! lol
Great video man.
and yet, I'll still play and finished these both multiple times but won't even touch 3 with a long pole.
How have I NOT heard of you yet???
When you said that the camera really hinders you in II, did you mean that it helps you?
ngl i didn't like the tarzan world design, like there was this cutsene and when it ends you are staring at vines. what are you supposed to do? turn fucking around and climb these background looking vines.
yes i like exploring but the worlds being so open meant that i often went the wrong way.
yeah tarzan's direction is just wonder around till something happens so I understand why many people don't like it
@@JayEmm kh1 is probably the game where i got lost the most and heard most about people getting lost. Wich isn't that big a deal if you replay but playing first time can make you like the game less
deep jungle has aged the most by far
Yeah it's always been a very confusing level, I wish there was more stuff that's interconnecting and interactive without being confusing
How did you like KH3? Is it your favorite?
It was okay, I think it was mostly fun because of how modern it is but I didn't feel it had the spark the other two big games had
starting with "story" bruh it's common sende KH1's story destroys KH2's story. KH2 mainly shines in being a good speedrunning game
Really well done!
Since i’m not a fan of platforming, i think kh2 is better but don’t get me wrong kh1 has insanely good combat as well as kh2
I agreed with everything you said, couldn't have put it better
Kh2 movement and combat in kh1 story... gasp
Slide abilities shouldn't exist. It just makes people constantly slide to go faster when it doesn't even make sense. As a gameplay mechanic it should just be slide of dodge roll. And that should have a strong cool down after using it so it doesn't get slammed to run faster
Man, i wonder if Roxas will get another chance at the spotlight 😢
Great vid
anybody who actually tried to do the lion king world shouldve just tried slapping the square button a few times to try out the different lion combos
The whole game is tedious filler until you get to ansem Riku and sephiroth
@@eziospaghettiauditore8369 that too
Great video!
It's funny cause the reason why you prefer KH1 is the reason why I dislike KH1 (except for the exploration point)
1. The stories of all the world is too basic and Sora is just too happy.
2. I dislike the lvl design because everything is a maze. I almost lost 2 hours in all world because I'm lost. There is just no indication of where to go
3. I understand the fact you prefer the defensive play style of KH1 but I like the offensive gameplay in KH2 and damn, the drive form are my favorite things in KH2.
Ps : Sorry for the bad English, I'm French 😅
reaction commands are coming back in kh4!
I love KH2 but the fact that the events of chain of memories are only blatantly referenced does kind of get me the wrong way. I mean I get Sora forgot his memories of castle oblivion but there could've been a little more context to it...
There is 1 thing i love about 1
The magic upgrades
I skipped 1 world (Monstro) and lost 1 WHOLE spell in the entire game
And the upgrades you get them with things like boss fights and sadly Poo's World
ohh right this channel... got recommended by a friend of yours
writing is on point
why is this in my recommended. i mean, i ain't complaining, buy HOW
I just finished playing KH1 for the first time ever, did COM & 358 movies, now I’m on 2.
Kh2 combat is fun but I still go back to the grounded and solid combat of kh1
How ? There is dodge roll lol
I like kh2 better. Kh1 for me was really boring and easy. I prefer the superior movement and combat system of kh2. (Gotta admit tho kh1 definitely had a better story/charm)
Common reason for someone who likes the sequel! WHAT A SHALLOW PLAYER YOU ARE!
For me kh2 are better by booses ofc and all the Magic’s moves and the summons and the age of sora and his cloth but both are good love it
Yeah sorry I just replayd Kingdom Hearts 1 while the attention to level design and interaction is great there simply isn't enough of it and a lot of it is padded by tedious bosses or having to go back to the world and the item not being worth going back to the world for.
I much prefer Kingdom Hearts 2 rewarding you after completing tough encounters instead of tedious unbalanced clunky combat and then I have to search around every nook and cranny of a level for something cool.
Just running around in Kingdom Hearts 2 with the skateboard is more fun than I had exploring anything in Kingdom Hearts 1 especially on replays
Also disagree with you on the bosses most of Kingdom Hearts bosses are terrible where you have to run away when they charge up some attack and then just evade for what feels like 30 seconds until you can actually hit them again
Your companions are useless except for healing you in Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts 2 lets you proactively respond to everything not just with reaction commands but also with parrying attacks and reflecting projectiles back at enemies just like before
Edit: spelling
Why is KH 1 superior? Because of Traverse Towns main theme
Same KH1 is my favorite as well even tho KH2 is still great
I have just recently replayed through both KH1 & 2 and man I found KH2 is just superior. Combat in KH1 is way more clunky, a couple of the worlds are just plain frustrating to play through (Deep Jungle and Atlantica) and the story while good is just pretty plain.
Re : CoM I think has a better Sora and Riku writing. Problem is, the most CRUCIAL story in the game doesn't have the hack and slash gameplay.
yeah CoMs story is actually really great but I can't get into the gameplay too much
@@JayEmm game play is really good compared to the level design of that game
Only reason i prefer 1 is the riku vs sora fights
I love KH1 but goddamn did I hate the final bosses. Though admittedly it's kinda my fault they were hard cause I never used block.
Edit: I also liked how open the worlds were in KH1.
idk why i got this recommended 2 years later lol kh2 is better in my opinion but i definitely agree that kh1 is extremely underrated! you should make more in depth videos on games like kh i can see you going places
Kh1: shitty camera
KH2 was so much better
I was no fan of kh2 the gameplay killed it for me. The story was ok though
I’m also a sucker for kh1, I watch kingdom hearts 1 videos on UA-cam for the comfort feelings , like it relaxes me like nothing else
Critical Mode is not easy, fight the lingering will on lv1 crit and tell me it’s easy.
@@keybladeslashw900 I did. It was kind of easy. Very slow and repetitive though. It’s gonna take a long time.
@@doggoadexx2680 Yh to me it wasn’t skill based but more consistency based which I still thought was hard
I'm sorry everything you said was repetitive especially party members being useless was true for the first game
It's not incredibly easy on proud I died early on to a couple nobodies who can two shot you when you play as Roxas
Summons are actually useful this time whereas in the first game the only useful one was mostly Tinkerbell and sometimes Mushu everything else was a waste of MP
Way more variety in combat moves and enemy variety
Not just spamming X Fireball and cure
Currently at 5:38 and I feel your completely disrespecting Kh2
Sora de kh2 le gana facil al sora de kh1
