Hahn Solo: Sibelius Violin Concerto

- Welcome to Hahn Solo: Sibelius edition! In this ongoing series, I perform only the solo violin part of some of my favorite concertos. I hope that, by hearing the parts separately, you’ll pick up on things you wouldn’t otherwise notice, and enjoy the piece even more when you hear it as a whole!
A concerto includes music written for soloist and for orchestra. But outside of the practice room, neither the audience nor the violinist working on the piece ever gets to hear the solo part without the orchestra.
While no concerto is just about the soloist, sometimes it helps to examine a single part in order to understand the whole. I find that hearing the violin part by itself not only highlights how complex it is on its own, but how the solo and orchestral parts support one another in ways that listeners might not be aware of. While each part can stand on its own as a nuanced piece of music, everything comes into focus when you hear the richness of the piece as a whole; their subtleties complement one another.
I have been wanting to try this out as an experimental performance format for a long time. I finally got the opportunity during my residency at Radio France in May 2019, rehearsing an hour before a concert while a friend captured it on my phone. While we missed a few moments here and there, I hope that you’ll find this performance both educational and fun.
Try watching this video side by side with the whole concerto, recorded live on May 2, 2019 with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and see what your new perspective brings:

"Hahn Solo." Well it made me laugh. She’s the violinist that made the Sibelius Run in less than twelve parsecs!
What about Chew-BACH-a?
omg i didn't even realize this before you said it
This thread is epic....
There are not the legatto you are looking for, move along
Damn, you beat me to it! I’m still giving you a thumbs up.
Did you know that a parsec is actually a measurement of errors in movie scripts? Crazy right!?
She is playing solo, but I can hear the orchestra somehow. Simply amazing.
Only because you've listened to the recording of the full orchestral work so many times, but even if your harmonies are good you can simply imagine the progressions.

Heh! 😹 She shook my hand and crushed my pinky with her pinky! 😸
that 4th finger vibrato, right?
Her husband is lucky to be able to hear her every time she’s practicing.
Sure about that? It’s a bunch of passages repeated over and over again 😅 though if Hilary is playing them they sure will sound beautiful
And children
that's too bad she's married. That really throws a wrench in my plans to freeze her in carbonite in playing posture.

Or just lucky. She seems to be a truly wonderful person.
I was there, it was amazing. And one hour after (or less) she played once again with orchestra. Listening Sibelius solo and Sibelius with orchestra just after was a quite an experience.
What happened during the rests this vision edits out?
I think you witnessed something unique and rather special. Lucky you!
Amazing. Wish I was there. And sitting in the red seats because they look very comfortable! What a legendary player she is.

If I was stranded on a desert island with only one piece of music to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be the Sibelius Violin Concerto, preferably with a recording of Hilary Hahn as the soloist. This is a rare treat - thank you so much for sharing this!!!

I could never do that! I would go crazy with so much emotion going on! I'd choose the Bach´s chaconne, which would also make me crazy but in a different way! Most beautiful! I never tire of hearing Hilary Hahn play this-- The sublety, tone, musicality and singing melody - Sibelius must be applauding, wherever he is!
Grey-haired bloke headbanging to the chase scene at 14:32, we are right there with you
I've always wanted to ask - I know the general etiquette in classical concerts is to not clap between movements, etc - but is it ok to headbang? I know not to headbang so hard like I'm in metal concerts, though - I just feel like I WOULD headbang in any concert no matter what, it just cannot be contained.XD
@@xxathenacraftsxx well I massively annoyed someone behind me by doing it to Verdi's Requiem when I was 14, but you'd probably get away with what he's doing.
