I have 6 barred rocks and I absolutely love my birds. This is my first flock ever and I'm glad I found this breed. They are between 6 and 7 months and just started laying a few weeks ago.
This massive two day storm has kept them inside the coop. I'm worried about them but they haven't fussed once til this am. They took on all weather. Rain and storms.
I love the green blue colors on their feathers. Such a beautiful bird.

The nice thing is they have naked feet. So unlike my light brahma and silkies they are much more willing to go In the run that filled with snow yesterday. There was so much sideways flow. Lol

@@raven8472Chickens I'm in Ohio. Our winter's can b rough. When I researched birds I knew I wanted a cold hardy bird. I didn't realize the feathers on their feet (of other breeds) kept em from going in the snow. Makes sense tho. If the feathers get wet their feet get cold.

@@SmallOklaFarm They are delicious! And to hear the chickies squawk after laying it's a joy. I expected eggs to be where I was looking. And they have finally took to the egg box but the first week the eggs were buried in straw and just inside the coop door. Now the eggs are on top of the straw makes it so much easier to find. They tend to lay within the hour I let em out an til about noon and since they started laying I get 2 to 4 most days now. I ate 4 eggs this am an have 14 eggs I don't know what to do with and will have more in the am! It's amazing!
Your chickies will be in production soon and you too will have lots of eggs!

@@Rizik1986 We have given several 18 packs away, but with fifteen hens, we plan on dehydrating them. My sister did this and I was dubious that a powdered egg could taste good, but she gave me a sample and if you had placed two versions beside each other in a blind test, I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Plus, with them powdered, you can store a lot of eggs in a small space.

It has been my experience that if a rooster decides that YOU are not the boss, then he will assume that HE is the boss. You need to show him who is in charge. I'm not advocating for bird abuse here, but if he attacks you, he needs to lose this fight in no uncertain terms. A Buff Orpington rooster tore my elderly mom up one day and it would have been worse if the dog hadn't come to the rescue.

Thanks for the info! We have been raising meat birds so we've had lots of roosters. Our main rooster is a barred rock. His dad was also a barred rock but he was a complete jerk. One of his sons, however, was the sweetest rooster I'd ever met. So now he is our main rooster and gets to stay. I had no idea how amazing roosters were before. They do the cutest coo and dance around treats to call their girls over. They stand there to make sure the girls eat and stand watch very diligently while the girls lay an egg. They really are amazing.

I have fifteen barred rock hens and one gigantic barred rock rooster. Several of the barred rock hens will flock to me wanting to jump in my lap, wanting me to pick them up, and follows me around everywhere. I free-range them all daily and lock them up at night. Like I said, the rooster is another matter. It is huge and is VERY protective of the hens. It will often come after me if I turn my back on him. It will attack, slapping his legs against my rubber boots, but while annoying, harmless. I kinda like that because that thing could possibly kill a hawk, eagle, dog, cat or fox if one decided to come in the fence. For that reason, I keep it around. Five are older at 39 weeks and ten are younger at twenty-two weeks. One of the younger hens laid her first eggs at 22 weeks, but all the older hens started laying at eighteen to twenty weeks. I think the cold weather delayed the ten younger hens. The eggs are rather medium sized right now, but are starting to get larger as the chickens get a bit older. They made it through the 12 degree F night with no issues.

If they are sitting on my knee or I am walking around with one (one hens likes to help me go out to the road to check the mail. lol) that rooster has his eye locked on me. If u do get these in Texas I might recommend trying backyardchickens.com and find the local groups, also on Facebook is a good resource for local chicken groups, because they will know all the tricks to keep your birds healthy and alive in that region!!!!!

I enjoy my free range minimal medication eggs. Hurts me in the winter to lock then in the coop. But I want to keep them safe when there's no bushes to hide in during the colder months. If you plan on having 100s of chickens you'd definitely want to protect the flocks with vaccines.
