I’m new to this but I’ve been told to always move the bully, not the one being bullied. Moving the Bully gets her knocked down some notches on the pecking order and that supposedly makes her behave better when she is reintroduced to the main flock again

My grandma said to never just have two different colors. She said, “birds of a feather flock together, is true, and when there’s only two different kinds, they will be against each other.”
She also cautioned to never have all one kind and adding just one bird Whois different, that’s asking for trouble.

Have you considered getting a Rooster? He could stop the majority of this “pecking order” as he keep ALL of his ladies in line from biggest to smallest! Easy remedy if you don’t mind a little crowing!!

I have just a handful of chickens, a barred rock, 2 Rhode Island reds, and a buff Orpington. The barred rock is at the top of my flock’s pecking order followed by the bigger of the two reds. The smaller red (which is the smallest bird of the flock) and the Orpington are at the bottom. The Orpington in fact is the most docile but friendly chicken I’ve ever seen. I’m thinking of getting more of them as I build out my flock

  • @mrsrlkennedy

I have found that each chicken keeper has a different level of tolerance for acceptable natural pecking order. When I would separate some, my best friend says, eh unless someone is bleeding it is best to let them sort it themselves. That being said, I have come to know there are breeds that are more compatible than others. And I tend to steer clear of those bossy breeds. And as far as a rooster goes, he will eliminate the fussing to a certain degree, but with him comes a new set of problems.

Good morning from NC! I have been enjoying watching y’all’s videos the last few weeks as we are first time chicken owners. We just moved our 6 week old chicks into the coop yesterday ( we were hoping to get it done earlier but we underestimated the time it took to build a coop 😂). We have 4 barred rock, 4 golden comets, and 4 black australorps. We will definitely keep this in mind if they can’t get along! Keep up the great content!

I have just introduced two new 5 month old hens to my existing flock of three 8 month old hens, I let them free range and keep the door to thier run propped open which has roosting bar in there, I also have a few sawhorse's throughout the yard to provide refuge for the new hens as everyone sorts out the new pecking order. It's only been a week and a half and I see already thing are calming down and the new hens are starting to integrate with the older girls, oh also when I feed them leftovers I spread it over a large area so the new girls don't get left out.
Basically I think you have to let then sort it out, hard to do if they're penned up without a place to escape, good luck

It is universal in all breeds, all colors. It is I suppose a survival strategy. Chickens are a matriarchal society with a dominant hen. I learned over the years that a rooster helps keep order, and if you live in a place compatible, free ranging allows the bottom of the "pecking order" means of escape. Eventually, it all evens out when the hen's learn to respect the order. Only once in 50 years of practicing these simple steps did I have to put down a hen that was just savage, even to the rooster! lol Best of luck, and thanks for the video. R.

I can spot a mistake. you didn't introduce your dog to the chooks correctly. the dog is hunting the chooks and not the foxes and air predators. You need to leash the dog when it's out with the chooks until it calms down around them, about two or three weeks. then you unleash and body block your flock from the dog and just stand there and stare at the dog. If it looks at the chooks you growl NO! Then continue to body block. repeat the leash for two days on every bolt. I guarantee things will change.

Hidy. Why do you not let the roam? I have a 10x12 run and I feel guilty not letting them out. The hawks around here got one of the babies, which are locked up now. I have neighbors on 3 sides with acres and they all let theirs roam. What are your thoughts on that? I do have 4 dogs large to little and they leave them alone.
