Tucking my pinky in had never been a consideration for me because I had tried it once and was uncomfortable with the feel years ago. This is something that I'm going to have to revisit. Thanks Elise!
I throw almost all lower end equipment (I’m old and slow). 😊 I have a Storm Electrify BSY that I was struggling to control and I asked my PSO to shine it. He said “So, you want an expensive White Dot?” He ended up resurfacing the ball to I think 2000 (this was a while ago), and the change in ball reaction was amazing. This was a really good video, Elise!
Great explanation of how to change surfaces on a bowling ball to get a better roll, also by adding some compound to polish and change the lanes topography. I'm to get some pads for surgery on my bowling balls, thanks Elsie!!
Excellent teaching video. Working at a pro shop, people under value surface adjustments whether it be a new ball purchased or building their arsenal. While we provide lifetime surface adjustments for free for balls purchased at the pro shop, customer do not leverage the service because the lack understanding the impact it can have. Nice job!
Excellent video and informative. Right now, I have only 3 balls in my bag not counting my spare ball which is a WD Patriot which I only use for 7 pins, yes if you're guessing I'm a lefty high speed low rev. My favorite ball right now is the X-Cell which I keep the surface at it's out of the box finish that seems to work best for me compared to adding more surface and or polishing it up. Next favorite is my TNT Infused which I keep the surface at it's out of the box polished finish, I've not had to change the surface on this ball whatsoever no matter what the lane conditions and oil patterns maybe. Finally, but definitely not least is my TNT which I keep at a 500-grit dull, I've tried polishing the surface and it becomes a nightmare for me. It will work for me ok at its original out of the box finish but not nearly as good as the 500-grit dull finish does. Those 3 balls right now have been enough for me to tackle any lane condition and oil patterns thus far. You and your family have a good, safe and blessed rest of yer day and upcoming weekend.
I've done this for years and don't have a spinner. Yes, a spinner does a much better job of polishing and adding surface. But it isn't absolutely necessary. When we're warming up I have Abralon pads in my backpack and don't hesitate to add surface if it is needed. For those new to bowling it is illegal to alter the surface after the game starts so do it while warming up. CTD makes a good hand applied polish if you don't have a spinner. It is supposed to reach 5500 on a spinner and 4500 by hand. I don't have any way to check the accuracy of that but it works for me. Good video! I especially enjoy your ball reviews because at 70 years of age I find I throw the ball a lot like some women now. Not nearly as accurate as you but our ball speed and revs are pretty close. 😁
I thought the rule about changing surface only applies after the ball has been put into play for that game. For example, if I play the 1st game in league and I want to change the surface before the 2nd game starts I can. Or, if I want to change to a ball, in the middle of a game, one that has not yet been used in that game, but I want to change the surface before I use it, I can, so long as I don't alter the surface of the ball during the game once it has been put into play. I believe this is the rule as I understand it. Same thing applies to cleaning your ball with a cleaning solution.
Update, I just watched one of JR's recent videos where is explains that once competition starts, you cannot change the surface of ANY of your balls, apparently. I didn't know that, I thought as long as the ball had not yet been in place for the game being played, you could change the surface. But perhaps I am wrong about that. Good thing I haven't done that in competition or I may have had a due awakening. Referring to the official USBC rules (that I just looked up), you CANNOT change the surface of ANY of your balls once "competition" has begun, AFTER the "practice" period has concluded. You can change during the 10min practice session, but once that has concluded you cannot change the surface of your ball.
Great info Elise. Detailed explanation and eaasy to understand. I have found adding 1000 surface weekly has provided the added hook to carry on my league house shot.
Great video. I am a senior bowler with lower speed. The shot I get to bowl on is a used house shot from the day before. If you throw up 2nd arrow it hooks instantly. So I have to move inside. If I throw it over 3rd arrow and try to keep it inside it usually will go on the nose. If I throw it out more it doesn’t t come up and if I use my Mesmorize it hits flat and leaves 10 pins. I bought an Optimum Idol pearl and with polish it’s over under. I tried it with surface and it hooks instantly. So I got an IQ tour to throw inside so it might not over react. That one reacts the best but I have no room for error. If I throw it inside it a 10 pin or 4 pin and if I move right with it split city. I keep trying to get my speed up but am having trouble with that. I will try polishing on my Mesmorize again. I have a spinner.
Surfacing is huge! I have learned quickly (well, after several months of being too afraid to try 😂) that adjusting by sanding, compound, polish, or a combination of these takes a ball from feeling useless to being a good ball fast. I just finished resurfacing my Perfect Mindset (500, 1500, 2000) because it had lost its tack. While watching this video, I took my Theorem (500, 1000, 1500, compound) back to out of box to get that hook back. My Venom Black (which I was ready to sell because I hated that ball at every grit tried) I took back to 4000 and polished it. No hook, but it's finally predictable and usable. Next I'll take my old Rhino down to 500 and compound. I do it all by hand since I don't have a spinner, but it's worth the effort to make a ball work with you instead of against you. I absolutely love that Mesmerize, by the way. Hopefully, I'll grab one someday. Awesome video, Elise!
Done! That’s what I needed to hear: “..more hook in the front part of the lane.” Yes! Vs an otherwise great shot that suddenly goes Brooklyn like my out-of-box Ocean Vibe (which is getting its first haircut tomorrow).
I liked the info about how polishing or sanding can get you the reaction that would fit one's game. Specifically, about someone purchasing a bowling ball and thinking it doesn't work for them. Great info especially with how much a bowling ball can cost these days.
Awesome video! Your explanation and shot making was spot on. Great example of showing the impact of surface changing a ball. I'm more speed dominant, so I like surface more. I liked how the 1000 sanded Rattler Big Bite looked.
I like the big bite because of the motion and the carry down lane also i will also try tucking my pinky to see what it will do for my release nice video and a lesson learned at the age of 65.
Favorite Part in the Video: Adding Surface It's a game changer, I've begun to play around with it and boy does it matter. So many old bowling balls now have new life again with surface, and a fresh detox...
Great Teaching, I too use different surface to experiment , I am more of a solid type person, where you say straighter is greater …agreed ., I'm slowly learning on how to use polish more . Loved the video though. Thank you both
She mentioned how tucking her pinky brought her tilt up. I wouldn’t mind a video explaining that a little more in depth. I’m also curious about how being behind the ball and getting under the ball (cupping) change the tilt and roll. Video?!
I really dont have a favorite ball only because knowing the right move on the lanes means a lot i did learn a lot from you i love most of the time polish i do have a ball spinner from this point i will be watching Your videos to learn more knowledge about bowling and the bowling ball. I bowl mostly house shot .
I'm always a fan OF surface. I'm usually chasing after the smoother reaction and blending out the cliff. But now that I'm trying out 2-handed we'll see if that holds true.
I find that in the summer on my local lanes, polish is almost mandatory. I have had the most success with big asym balls like my Reality and BW3.0 and when I go to a place that I have never bowled, I will typically go with a couple of polished balls, but also have a pad ready to knock off the shine if during practice I see I need some surface

The polished Mesmerize looked really good to me. I may have to use 1000 polished for my arsenal moving forward. How often would I have to reapply since I’ll have to use a pro shop to get polish? Thanks.
Depends on the pad and how you use it. In my experience name brand pads like Abralon or Siaair pads will last 10-20 uses. Cheaper pads maybe 2 or 3 times.
It’s not that it doesn’t mean ANYTHING, it doesn’t mean anything comparing different strengths of coverstock. A weak solid cover will not out hook a strong Pearl cover just because it’s a “solid”
I have ball spinner, when I do by hand, I get more surface not less, the pad moves slower across the surface of ball and cuts deeper for me. if you use less pressure by hand I can see what Elise has said to be true...........makes on think I like that.
I like solid covers best, I also know they roll early and roll out as oil moves and disappears, so we all need hybrids and pearls as well to match with our style and land conditions
I personally find more surface does not work on low Diff. balls, they roll out before they reach end of oil pattern and go straight, again personally I only change surface on balls with .045 diff and higher
If you're not on Storm staff then you're an idiot for "preferring" any specific brand. You shouldn't have any loyalty to a brand unless it benefits you to do so.
The fun of the game of bowling....good tourneys and bad tourneys and of course bowling with the GOAT is an honor in itself right?? For me personally it would be PDW but that's my opinion lol Hopefully I can win the drawing .. 😉 Have a great week and happy bowling 🎳
Great video. Concepts really well explained and with great visual examples.
I learned the most about bowling from this video than most of the others I've watched!! Thank you!!

Elise,
Very informative video with well conveyed tips.
Was wondering what your method of increasing
ball speed is ?
Thanks !

Great vid Nate and Elise. Added surface to my Phaze 5 with 1000 grit Abralon...whole different ball. Gonna hit the hybrid 2.0 with the same treatment.

@@squidly2112 all ball surface changes must be done before you start bowling. Even if you have not thrown the ball.

If you finish qualifying and make the cut, you can then change the surface prior to the next round

Good video on adjustments for learning what to do.(why tuck pinky is important).Mesmerize for sure looked better to me with and without the polish.

Same with my bw 3.0. Wayyyy too much hook
Thanks for the video. Can you share the compound grit or polish you used?
Storm polish

Great video. I've been preaching this to my teammates for years. I sent them the link. Hopefully they finally listen.
I liked the Mesmerized with the polish. Would have been nice to know how long you sanded and polished each side of the bowling ball. Thx...

I liked the Mesmerize with polish the best. Radical Rattler Big Bite worked best out of box but I still liked the Mesmerize polished overall.
I like the look of the Mesmerize!! Great video, the Asymmetrical ball suits my eye better.
Great video!! That mezmerize looked great with polish
She mentioned how tucking her pinky brought her tilt up. I wouldn’t mind a video explaining that a little more in depth. I’m also curious about how being behind the ball and getting under the ball (cupping) change the tilt and roll. Video?!
I loved both balls in both scenarios. But if I had to choose one for my arsenal, I would go with mesmerize with a bit of surface!

Good day 😊 what is your ball speed? Like the explanation of using the abralon pads
This is a big help for me on abralon pads and polish. Thank you for explaining the difference. This helps me tremendously. Thank you!!!!!
I'm always a fan OF surface. I'm usually chasing after the smoother reaction and blending out the cliff. But now that I'm trying out 2-handed we'll see if that holds true.

Great job keep up the good work you are doing
The mesmerize with polish looked the best on the house pattern
Which polish did you use ?
The mesmerize with polish BY FAR... I need those pads to experiment with my Cypher and Archetype Hybrid

Hips for days! 🥰
Whats "the House shot" mean?
I definitely prefer 1500 on solids fits my game alittle better but pearls are becoming a favorite as of late
Thanks for the video...time for me to buy a ball spinner😊
I can see!
Very good video kiddo
Solid, pearl and hybrid doesn’t mean anything anymore. Luke Rosdahl does a great video on this subject.
It’s not that it doesn’t mean ANYTHING, it doesn’t mean anything comparing different strengths of coverstock. A weak solid cover will not out hook a strong Pearl cover just because it’s a “solid”
A link or something to the video would be nice. I perused Luke's channel for 10 minutes. Didn't really find anything.
Which is kinda what I explained in the video about how this hybrid out hooks the solid 😃

Mesmerize with a 500 grit is where I would have it, might even take down to a 360
Surface is more important than the ball that you buy. Getting new balls every year doesn't make sense when the surface can be refreshed/changed.
I have ball spinner, when I do by hand, I get more surface not less, the pad moves slower across the surface of ball and cuts deeper for me. if you use less pressure by hand I can see what Elise has said to be true...........makes on think I like that.

I like memorize with polish
Good afternoon nate and Elise
It looks to me like you got better results without polish.
I like mesmerize im really thi king of getting that ball.
I bet their times you wish the Olympics had Bowling Events
Yo, Elise, are you losing weight? You look great. Whatever you’re doing, keep it up.
💋💋💋💪
Neither. I prefer Storm equipment. But thanks for the video.
If you're not on Storm staff then you're an idiot for "preferring" any specific brand. You shouldn't have any loyalty to a brand unless it benefits you to do so.
Mesmerize with polish looked best
If u wanna get a true 1000 use ctd pads by hand
why didn't you throw them the way they were out of box finish??? You didn't "change" anything because we can't see the change.
The goal was to get both balls at the same surface because they come out at different surfaces.
The fun of the game of bowling....good tourneys and bad tourneys and of course bowling with the GOAT is an honor in itself right??
For me personally it would be PDW but that's my opinion lol
