I bought the loco new. After about 10 runs I disassembled and cleaned the safety valve and re-fitted it. That seemed to help with the weeping valve...many owner complain about the safety valve :)
This loco has a slip eccentric on its valve gear. This means you have to push the loco at least one revolution of the wheels in the direction you wish to travel before opening the steam regulator. All Roundhouse 'Basic' series loco's use this method. Their more expensive 'Classic' series loco's have a fwd/rev control in the cab.
You also have to exchange the steam regulator needle for one suitable for rc. In the kit you get a new steam regulator housing which means new fibre washers. That's the checking for leaks part
@@gasmith841 Thanks, I made a Accucraft Superior radio contolled years ago and all I had to do was change the regulator handle out and put a servo in, easy.
Is that the standard Roundhouse safety valve? Seems to operate a lot better than mine which just oozes steam continuously!

Is there not a reverse on this locomotive?

Where did you buy all your gear from like the transmitter, receiver the switch and the controller?
Fosworks
@@gasmith841 thanks. I’ve not sorted it out with roundhouse themselves who are providing me with everything I need from there factory.
why do you need to check for leaks, all you have done is put a servo in it
