- In this video we are fitting a new Gates timing belt kit and water pump. I did buy the camshaft locking tool but it appears to be the wrong one. Have a look how I did this job. Please refer to manufactures instructions for torque settings.

I would put my money on that idle problem being a MAF sensor, mine had a similar issue and turned out to be the MAF. Good video Martin
I will be checking that James, the main problem is the lack of performance possibly due to fuel starvation so i'll be changing the fuel filter as well.
Run it unplug the maf see if there's any change
Great work Martin as always, as well as the MAF sensor I would also look at suspect coil packs on the plugs. I had that exact problem with an Astra, rough idle and lack of power. Replaced them and the plugs cured it. Looking forward to the next one.

Watched from start to finish you give a clear and easy to follow explanation of each part Martin and how to complete the job this is an excellent video. It's amazing how many people don't change the tensioners guides and water pump and wonder why in two months time the bearings have gone or the water pump has fell to pieces. I gather them bearings are self adjusting over time with the levers on were you can select new belt or used. Great video.
I own a 2004 Opel Astra G diesel, Y20DTH engine, 2.0 DTI. The setup looks similar to yours and I have to replace the water pump. Your video looks very easy to follow. I will try it myself :)
I treated myself to a mains powered impact a few years back, only about £60. Certainly a game changer, it loosened the bottom pulley bolt on my Volvo D5 in seconds and those things are on tight!
Great video - I'm doing the same job on my Zafira.
You were very lucky getting the tensioner bolt off so easy. Mine was on so tight that I ended up having to drill the top of the bolt off. Took hours.
And the third bolt on my water pump must have been hammered into a torx shape rather than a hex H5 like the other two. I had to use a T30 to get it off.
They really should supply three new bolts with the water pump.

I replaced timing belt & water pump 12 months ago on this same model car. I just Cut a triangle piece of metal & wedged & locked the cam shaft.
Mine is Australian Holden Astra made by opel obviously last of the Astra G 8/2005 it has done 295,000 kms & it runs good.. Do regular services on any car & they will normally last much longer than expected.

great stuff martin! I done a timing belt before on a Kseries engine, I bought the wrong locking kit for the fly wheel, ( i never knew until the bottom moved!) bought the correct tool and all was good, I got my dad to help with the belt, its a job that needs more that pair of hands as you say.
That locking kit is for the XER engine you have the XE engine also throttle body gets clogged up including a 1mm bore best off removing cleaning and refitting.

Balls off steel Martin doing it with no locking tool. IM a trained vauxhall mechanic seen people do that and bend a valve when it flicks round. You must have more jam than hartleys my son. IF you get a fault code for cam shaft sensor in the near future . recheck cam belt tension . this sum times happens. great video.

I brought a astra twintop yesterday, 2008 1.6 61k miles full service history. £800, owner said the roof was faulty. Took me about 2 hours to fix it and now the roof works. It's in immaculate condition. I need to change timing belt and water pump because I don't think its ever been changed.

I've never aligned the cams and bottom crank like that I usually put the wheel back on jack up the passenger side and put it in fourth and spin it. I'm gonna star using this method

Just to say if you had undone the torx bolt in the centre of the plastic bracket that holds air box in place it would of stayed attached to the air box when you removed it rather than pulling it out the rubbers and breaking the plastic lug off. And the timing tool didn’t fit because it’s for later type engines. The one you needed is metal not plastic and it has slit in it to fit over webbing in between cam sprockets. 👍🏻
Yes I know now it's the wrong one but the listing said it was the right one when given my registration number.

Great video, i have a 98 Astra G 1.4 for 14 years, have done 3 timing belt changes never used locking tool, but the last couple months seems to be no end of problems, latest is i think i have a leaking water pump, shame because timing belt not due for another 2 years. would like to keep it on the road but as i say last 2 months have been very trying.
Get some gas struts on that bonnet, savage garage retrofitted to his mondeo, nice upgrade

Just cable tie the camshaft sockets together before removing the belt done that way for years
It saves paying for hundreds of different tools which you may only use occasionally 40 years Ford mechanic

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but If you've got a mo', can u explain how to do that? Do you cable them before backing off the tensioner, or after? Belt has to be off I guess? Cheers. Great video Martin.
@@dg1294 hello David before you remove the belt get the timing marks aligned and the get a large cable tie and wrap it around the 2 camshaft sprockets where they meet-up closest to each other, I hope this helps and makes sense. All the best. Steve.

Great video and you always show it clearly and step by step, when doing work on cars . I think if that was me I would of seen it was a new belt and just taken the new one back for a refund, but of course it wouldn’t of been a option for you as you wanted to make a video on it. Its not a cheapo its for the 1.8 with variable valve timing that's why it didn't fit

eco tec engine are renowned for the idle to be lumpy i had a 2ltr vauxhell omega that would not idle properly you need to clean the idle control valve it gets a lot of soot build up on it. I think their is an upgraded part for it now. Also that subframe is looking a little rusty
i'll be checking all that in due course.

Those cam lock kits are designed for all the models Z18XE and the later XER And XE1 engines. It's like a universal kit. Some of the tools don't fit some of the engines.

If you've got a OBD2 reader which is capable of live data you want to look at the MAF sensor while idling. It should read 1.8 g/s (Grams per second) it can be a tad over but not by much and not under.
Check the long term and short term fuel trims aswell +/- as this will let you know whether it is under or over fueling to give you some direction as to what is causing issue.

i have the same model as this,,i attempted to do the timing belt and water pump today but ran out of daylight hours,i managed to get the three water pump bolts out which were very tight but the pump wont come out! it seems to rusted into the housing,i tried jarring it and leavering it but to no avail,think i may have to try a blow torch and some sort of extractor to pull on it! the bearings are totally shot i can move the pump wheel side to side a lot! no wonder water has been pouring from it each time i start up!
Great video just know the time belt tensioner needs to tensioned anti clockwise if not you normally hear a nocking noise from the indicator hitting the stopper not to far down the road the belt will fail maybe and good bye motor

I was wondering why such a nice looking car was only worth 450 pounds...until I got a look at all the rust on the underside!
It was just surface rust on the subframe, They all suffer with that. Its all been sorted now.
@@retrorestore It doesn't snow where I live, so no salt on the roads. I'm used to seeing only a patina of rust on the underside of cars, not loose flakes.
You will have to give that sub frame a little love before it rots out.

Even the fuel pump on the way out. That coil packs to spark plugs to spark plug wires. Best thing you try is to pull a lead off see if the engine rpms changes. Then run a octane fuel cleaner dirty injector spay pattern. Make sure the tank is full/ certain brands mix better with full tank. Then after you’ve covered everything go drive it till it gets up to temp run some hard acceleration sometimes it’s bad gas ⛽️ to low octane fuel sometimes they want mid to premium till it’s cleaned up. Then look at the intake and exhaust valves being fouled with carbon. What happens is their not getting a clean burn.
It could be many things but I like to see what codes are being thrown up first and take it from there.

you took a chance mate no locks on the timing well done ive chanced things myself lol but please take the plugs out makes things so much easier and no back pressure you could have done it yourself

That's not your first one Martin buddy lol. I heard a lot of boys complain about the plastic water pump but never had a problem with them myself. Always look at instructions 😂 or destructions rofl. I will tell you a funny story Martin went bought all the fancy locking kit my cousin said what you buy that for Ali he said you done enough of them to know the timing lol. Good old tipex lol.😂 That's it Gary give the old man a hand. Got another one for you Martin one came into Vauxhall one day ticking like a bomb tensioner was loose some one did the belt never did up the bolts lol. I seen some funny stuff when I worked for Vauxhall. All in all good job mate. 👍
When I did the Signum, the belt had been over tightened and the jockey pully's collapsed and the water pump seized. Lucky to get away with that one.

Nah you would be ok 👍🏻 remember the important part of the job is after installing and tensioning the new belt is to turn the crank a full revolution twice you would be able to feel anything untoward without any damage and check that all your timing mark lineup ok, the worst that can happen is if they don’t then just take the belt off and do it again until they do. Go for it, it’s a great sense of achievement. All the best. Steve.
