I am born and raised in Maine and Sand Dollars are definitely something I have taken for granted! Every summer my family and I make trips down to Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island and I love beach combing and finding a lot of cool stuff!
Did you know there is an old wive's tale behind Sand Dollars? One summer when I was about 12 or 13 I met this nice woman who was also beach combing who told me the story:
Legend goes that there was an old man by the sea who lost his wife from old age. When she was on her deathbed, she promised to stay with him forever, so she said he would find the heart of the sea- her heart- after she passed, he just had to keep looking. Legend says that if you find a whole sand dollar and shake it, you can hear a small rattling. (Which is actually true-it's a few bony-cartilage pieces that don't dissolve right away) If you were to open it up, you would find two small pieces of shell that look like tiny little doves, that when placed together, form a heart. (And like the heart, are VERY delicate-I have actually broken them a few times while trying to open it up) When the old man discovered this, at his worse time, he knew this was her gift to him.
Now, I have never heard this story outside of this one Summer but it just warms my heart to think about it-and I love sharing the story as well!! This is one of my many fond memories of the sea that have actually inspired me to become a Zoologist.

Thanks very much for your comment and anecdote Taylor Brown. I think being a zoologist is about as cool as it gets work-wise. Mrs Shell Casing Kid and I both love the Maine coast and the sand dollars we found there are treasures to us! Check in again soon - I'm planing on doing a few beachcombing videos in April. I'm excited to see how we do in NJ. All the best to you and yours - Paul

Check the wine bottle neck you found in the beginning of the video under a uv light! I collect uranium/vaseline glass and it has a antifreeze green look to it and I swear your piece did too🙂
    Enjoyed watching and great finds👍🏻😁

Hi Emily Bush! Wow! This video is from a couple of years back and although I did take that bottle neck with me that day, I'm sure I threw it out in the trash before we drove back south again. I'm sorry if I disappointed you. Thanks for checking out my channel though. Please check back again sometime soon - Paul

@j.roach-evans1010 - Hey, thanks very much for the subscription. Thanks also for the ID! We normally beachcomb in NJ, so shark's eyes are more prevalent there. Thanks for watching and please check back again soon - Paul
