I think it's separation from her when he has to work and tour, I don't think it's that she is lost to him and they're separated by that. More to discover of Bread, David's voice is magic!

David Gates definitely wrote the song everything I own about this fatherhood passed away he was his hero but she had stated himself in his own words that he intentionally wrote this song so that it could have another meaning for other people and that's why it's seems as though it's such a powerful love song when and reality is to love song about the relationship he had with his father.

Two places at one time is a bit misleading- he said he would be with you “tomorrow and today” which isn’t so much two places as two times, but the point is he would not want to be anywhere else.
Agreed, if I was given two choices of where I would want to be, both would be with you.
Actually, tomorrow is a "place" in time as is today so it makes perfect sense. Or maybe you have to be a bit of a physics nerd like me for it to make sense. :-)

Exactly; well two times, but it was poetic license like the other examples in the lyrics. She's not actually a liquid and the world wasn't really going to end - they're just if this or if that. I found it frustrating that some people didn't get it, and Harri apparently never did.

Well, it may be that because Bread was touring he was separated from the woman he loved. His life was making music but maybe it wasn't practical for her to go on tour with him. That is a tough life - living out of a bus and cheap hotels.
No, that's not it. That's too analytical. Too pedestrian. It's simply poetic license, like launching a thousand ships with a face (that doesn't happen), love for life running dry / you come and pour yourself on me (of course she's not a liquid), and should the world end and the stars go out, of course you don't take that or any of the "ifs" seriously, they're fanciful - the point is that whatever happens, he wants to be with her.

If he can be in two places at one time, then he can still be with her, even when he has to be away. So, the statement is a way of expressing how much he loves her, and loves being with her.
No, it's simply poetic license. It hasn't anything to do with being away.
"If a man could be two places at one time I'd be with you" The transcript put a period after that phrase, but it shouldn't because he explains the the two places are "Tomorrow" and "Today". He would like to be with her in those two places as he loves her so much.
yeah, I see mistakes in on screen lyrics sometimes so you have to put your listening ears on and not take that or poetry too literally, or read other things into it that aren't there. A lot of people, and the host, took a beautiful and genius love song and screwed it up.
Bread rabbit hole is very deep. David is one of the greats. Bread in their day was very big. They just don't put this kind of music out enough in today's " music ". One of my favorites is Aubrey.

I don't hear that. Tomorrow and today is what he said; two places in time. It's just a fanciful pondering like the other examples, ie she's not actually a liquid nor was the world going to end.

I sung this song at my Highschools Bluejay pageant. My father, mother, and my boyfriend's parents were there and my father started to cry and so did my boyfriend's mother, who is now my mother and law and has been for 39 years, and they both asked my mother did you know she could sing like that and she told them yes. Thank you for the memory. Yes it is one that you never forget. My husband was in the service the Army and I was a senior in highschool and we got married in 1984 until this day and forever.

All I can figure is perhaps that line was put in there because of the massive amount of Manpower that was in Vietnam at the time and I know he wasn't there but maybe it had something to do with that because if he were there he would need to be in two places at once to be with her I'm not sure that's true but I do know that at the time this song was a big hit it was well into the Vietnam War and there were so many men that were separated from their girlfriends and wives.

If he could be in two places at one time, maybe he had to go to work or maybe he was in the military, he's telling her there would be no other choice for where he would be, if it were possible. He'd be with her.

Oh my god that's reading too much into it. He said right in the next line two different places in time at the same time: tomorrow and today. It's poetry. You don't take it literally, just like "you come and pour yourself on me" doesn't mean she's actually a liquid...

i grew up in the 60's as a hard rock fan along with psychedelic and prog rock and was a bassist in a couple of bands then. most of my friends trashed bread when they first came out as too soft or even worse - elevator music - and way too poppy. i was the exception and recognized the genius of david gates and his voice. i would listen to jethro
tull one day and bread the next and the o'jays the day after that. backstabbers is one of the best motown songs ever. great music is just that regardless of genre

I interpreted that line “if a man could be 2 places at one time I’d be with you” as even if he had the power to be 2 places he’d just chose her over anything else. Another possible meaning is that if life requires him to be somewhere he wishes he could be with her as well
Don't need to read anything into it like many others. It's just imaginary wording, poetry, like Time In A Bottle, to emphasize feeling. The point is the love, not being on the road or the Vietnam war or other scenarios people are saying to make sense of it... all that is being too literal. She's not made of liquid either, when she pours herself on him.
It is one if the absolute most beautiful ballads of the 70's, the decade of grest ballads. This may be the best.

Along with Longer I love Run for the roses, Part of the plan, Leader of the band, and Same Ole Lang Syne. He left us way too soon may he R I P.

David Gates had a pure and enchanting voice. His songwriting was incredible storytelling. The production was superb on all his songs.
The "be two places at one time..." lyric, as some had pointed out, was due to his touring and being away from his wife. That being said, I always interpreted it as being, even if a man could be two places at one time, he'd pick her over anything...wouldn't even use the ability to be somewhere else even though he could.
It's not really two places or being on the road, or he would have said that. There's no need to imagine a scenerio; it's two places in time... not actual places. She's not actually a liquid either. It's poetic license, like Jim Croces' Time In a Bottle.

I don't see a need to turn it into a documentary or make sense of it or read something into it that isn't necessary... it's like Time In A Bottle; it's simply imaginary poetic license. One of the most gorgeous love songs ever. David Gates had such a gift for melody. David writes poetically, and you and I can't always figure out what he means. And sometimes his grammar is a little "weird" (Baby, I'm-a Want You). This is a classic for the ages.

I think the thought that he could be with her, even when he’s not is what he wants.
It's just poetry, not to be taken literally nor does it need extra interpretation. No need to make sense of it because it's imaginary, like saving time in a bottle; she's not made of liquid either when she comes and pours herself on him.
Their last concert Bread performed at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 19, 1973. I was 16 and it was my first concert. David Gates and Jimmy Griffiths where hating each other, they were on opposite sides of the stage and wouldn't look at each other! At the end of the concert everyone left the stage except David Gates, the lights faded to blue and he with only an acoustical guitar performed "IF". He then left the stage and it was over, not even an encore! It left the crowd stunted.
It's straightforward. "Two places at one time" then the next lyrics "tomorrow and today" those are the two places.
I think you would love the lead singer, David Gate's solo song, "Goodbye Girl". It's beautiful
And, I think, to almost everyone who has heard it, diamonds in our ears (my new fave saying; thanks, Harri.) It was so popular it appeared in many arenas of popular culture, especially the early days of The Young and the Restless.
I absolutely cannot recall the song from David Gates and bread that I would consider to be anything less than a major successful hit. I love each and everyone of them for obvious different reasons.
