    Wanderlust is the song that George Martin said was Paul’s greatest ever vocal performance. As a song it’s in my top 5 songs Paul has ever written. It’s absolutely gorgeous and deserves to be far better known than it is. I wish Paul had released it as a single. It would have killed!

      George Martin's view is a very meaningful one.
      I like this one a lot... but not as much as you do. Probably not in my top 20. But it is very good.
      Not sure how it would have done as a single... You never really know...

      Not a bad vocal, but, for the life of me, I can't see why anyone would call it his greatest. What about Maybe I'm Amazed? With a Little Luck? Monkberry Moon Delight? Could it be that Martin doesn't care for vocal shredding?

      @@knuckledragger9322 Considering George Martin’s background pre-Beatles was comedy tunes and classical music, I would say it’s highly likely he absolutely didn’t care for shredding.

    "Wanderlust", the song I keep returning to and my favorite track on Tug Of War. Very melodic with another amazing vocal from Paul. Have no idea why Paul saw the need to re-record this for Give My Regards To Broad Street when he already achieved pop perfection on TOW.

    Another outstanding vocal performance from McCartney.
    My favorite part is when they overlap both vocal parts at the end.
    Paul included "Wanderlust" in his most recent compilation album ("Pure McCartney").

    This one is tied with Someone Who Cares as my favorite on the album. I am partial to sea shanties and counter melodies, though. His vocal is amazing. There is an amazing version of this on his Give My Regards to Broad Street Sound track. It’s nestled in a medley of Yesterday, Here, There, and Everywhere, gorgeous!

    The whole album in this 2015 mix is boosted in the top end, so it sounds bright and crisp with that sheen over everything, especially in the brass, but in places it feels harsh or cold to me. Anyway, great song, great arrangement and production. And as you probably know by now, Wanderlust was the name of a boat they took in the Virgin Islands to get out from under a drugs search on their studio boat. (London Town sessions)

    The cover story is this is about recording the album London Town on the Fair Carol. The captain wouldn't let them smoke weed, and recording had to stop. I think the lyrics are a little deeper than that. Who knows? But I think every song is about John and the Beatles. So who knows?

    • @denpea-mm8zr

      Paul McCartney- "It’s actually a personal experience. What happened was that we were recording (we went out to the Virgin Islands to record an album called London Town) and we were on boats, in a little bay recording for a month. The captain of the boat that we were on was a little, sort of, heavier than the other captains - you know, he sort of took it a little more seriously - and at some stage we had a sort of argument with him, and I sort of said, ‘You know, we don’t need all this aggro stuff’, and we wanted to get off onto this other boat that happened to be in the harbour. These people had said we could come on this, and this boat happened to be called Wanderlust, so it became like a symbol of freedom to me, this catamaran, as it was, called Wanderlust. We only actually stayed one night on it, but it was like, after this hassling that this other fellow had given us, to get onto this boat was like freedom, you know, so the song for me is actually just carrying on the idea. You know, just head us out to sea and take us away from all these headaches, and just wanderlust kind of free."

    • @RoadienicknamedRory
      @RoadienicknamedRory 4 місяці тому +1

      I also heard that the catamaran was the one boat that was able to carry them all the way to international waters, where they would be safe to smoke their blunt out of reach of U.S. justice! 😂 hence the line, "captain says there'll be a bust, this one's not for me!"

    It may sound British to your ears, guys, but you must know that a fellow Californian (And not a random guy, but a musical symbol of California himself) like Brian Wilson chose to cover this song for McCartney tribute album a little more than ten years ago.
    He rendered this song a little more beachboy-esque, definitely less British.

    Like you I was thinking it was 'British' sounding in a particular way a day or two back. I didn't connect it with royalty though. Americans very probably connect the UK with royalty more than British people do. It just has that Elgar, Holst (Jupiter) sound which as a kind of resilient proud air to it.
    It could be used as an anthem by someone (with very different lyrics obviously).
    The song however is just about a potential drugs bust on a boat, and a captain who isn't that trustworthy. So they needed to leave it and got on another called Wanderlust.

      I think the brass adds to it too. Of course the Sgt Pepper title track had brass also, and that was reminiscent of brass bands in Northern England.

    I think "Wanderlust" is a really fine song, but I've yet to hear a mix that did justice to it. Both 1982 and 2015 are flat on the bottom end, and as others have pointed out here, the 2015 mix compounded the problem by boosting the top end almost beyond the point of endurance. It's a shame. It's one of the better songs on a highly uneven LP.

  • @Zholobov1

    • @debjorgo
      @debjorgo 4 місяці тому

      What, the original '82 album was mastered digitally so doing a remaster wouldn't add anything to the sound. So they remixed it for the rerelease. Something like that, wasn't it?

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 місяці тому

      @@debjorgo that was a strange decision, because they left Pipes Of Peace intact when re-released it in 2015 with Tug Of War. Why did they decide to redo the 1982 mix, I don't know, but after they did that, this 2015 version replaced the original in consequent vinyl releases as well. There was a 2LP in 2015 with bonus material and a single coloured LP in 2017 - they're remixed, not originals.

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 місяці тому

      And there was also "Pure McCartney" 2016 collection album, which had "Tug Of War" tracks in the remixed form. And I guess all official digital files you can find now are 2015.
