      @@stevesplacedownunder
Am not tech savvy or online guru. Don't know how to find your physical location.
      Am early Holden specialist.
Your 202 is not early '70s HQ. Is late '70s HZ or early Commodore from 78/79 (VB).
Your adaptor isn't M21 4 speed. It's an input shaft from a 3 speed all synchro & it also works nicely.
Your HZ/VB exhaust manifold incorporates a carburettor heater. It has to go. Your inlet manifold is EGR, solid to exhaust, cooking the carb & it aint good either. Rummage about for earlier SEPARATE inlet & exhaust manifolds from HR, HK, HT, HG or HQ. I have them & you're welcome to them.
I understand why you ran the exhaust up alongside the dissy but can't recommend that either. I suggest leave the original CAT stack where it is but send the hot exhaust anywhere but up the fuel & ignition side of the engine.
Regardless of any of the above, little 202 seems very healthy & there's no need to yank her out. She just needs love, understanding & a little attention.
All Holden Sixes from 1948 all the way to 2003 Ecotec are like your girlfriend... Treat them to a minimum of care & they'll slave away in the kitchen all day. (Just don't mention your girlfriend to your wife too often). Your 202 just needs some love.
You can swap bits like the carby & the dissy or even the entire engine 'til you're blue in the face. However, these items are all old now & it's likely none will work properly without thorough dismantle, cleanout, careful reassembly & fresh lube where necessary.
Fuel tank & entire fuel system look due for a rinse out & a thorough blowout. This costs nothing. Even the gaskets being durable Holden are likely OK to reuse.
Dissy will be long overdue for careful dismantle, free up, inspection, test, lube, reassembly & adjustment. Vac advance unit may have perforated diaphragm & need replacing.
Get the fuel system thoroughly clean & the ignition system set up nicely, replace those dud manifolds & get the point gap, timing & idle mixture right & that engine will sing. None of this costs anything. It just takes skill, experience & time.
When any engine runs properly there's no need to waste time on compression tests. Any weak cylinder will missfire at idle & smooth out above idle as momentum overcomes leaky valves & or worn or sticky rings. From your video soundtrack I can tell you that 202 is mechanically sound & healthy. She just needs bits cleaned out, reset & tuned. Definitely do NOT yank her out. If she had a steady miss on idle she might have been weak on one or two cylinders. She doesen't - engine is good. Better the devil you know than the one you don't & transplanting could easily import serious bigger troubles when that motor has no demonstrable issues other than neglect, age & tuning.
It clearly made sufficient torque to propel little D2 adequately & would suffice if it wasn't so sick.
Am in Country QLD. If you're not too far away, I'll glady donate an entire day to getting your amazing little D2-02 running like clockwork. Am more than happy to have any audience watching everything I do. Have Warner Brothers make a movie of it if you like. My workshop is mobile & operates out of the back of an old LandCruiser wagon (with Holden V8 power, of course). My Holden V8 is also HZ Red Motor, dilapidated, rusty & ugly but it runs perfectly. Your 202 can run perfectly too & I'll happily show you every step necessary to get her running right.
      Where are you situated?

    • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  2 місяці тому

@johnbrooks9523 hi mate thanks for this interesting comment. I am in Sydney so most probably too far away for a tune, but I will be okay with it otherwise. That would be magnificent though. It could be a HZ, it was pulled out of one of those type of utes to fit a 253 and I got the 202 off them. I have a few separate manifolds here off a 173 and a 186 actually, but never considered it because it used to run good and was okay. The input shaft I thought was out of an m21 that blew up on me, I did have a 3 speed but don’t remember pulling it apart, maybe I did, was a long time ago. But you are the specialist like you said and I’m certainly not so maybe that’s what I did. The fuel system certainly needs a clean out yes, not hard to do, just none of this has ever been a priority with so many other things to fix and play with.
It has for a long time had a dead miss though. Only runs on 5 cylinders. It’s not spark on that cylinder, the dizzy shaft isn’t bent(like I’ve seen on the v8s, hitting the firewall when pulling the engine out I’d say), it’s not a cam lobe, it’s not a valve because had the head off years ago to inspect. All I can think of now is a hydraulic lifter is seized in itself, this is the reason I mentioned a compression test, mainly on the cylinder that is missing. I recently came across this in a Yamaha golf cart we have here, same style of hydraulic lifter, and the plunger had seized in both of them and held the valves slightly open. It stopped running all together.
After filming this I looked at it again to move it back into the shed and found the screw that goes through the advance actuator and into the condenser had fallen out because the thread in the condenser had stripped, so condenser wasn’t grounded or earthed. I then popped number one plug out and timed it quickly, but wasn’t far out. I have a timing light and will do it properly, to 6 degrees before from memory. I hit the starter button and it fired right up and idled no problem, then I put it back in the shed. Still running on 5 though. It may even have a 186 pushrod in it, I believe they are a different length. It was very responsive on the throttle. When I get time I will do another tune up video. Look forward to your response. Thank you mate

As far as Holden motors goes I liked the 186 bored out to 192, Rebuilt myself, They when really well in anything, mine was in an old HT ute, with a 25/65 cam, extracted 2''' exhaust. I know of blokes that had the same motor in tractors and Land Rovers. The best motors Holden made I was always told. This one looks good in the Cat, maybe a tune up. Thanks for video.

The 202 had a higher compression ratio?..I remember blokes preferred 186, (I had chev slushmatic 2 spd,in a ht, but felt 202's, had a bit more poke), a cousin had a nice Hg monaro (gold, with the stripes), that had a 186 s, and 3 on the tree. (The lumpy cam made it sound good). I wonder if he knows, where it is now.

Give the old girl a bit of love mate, those old strommy WW single barrel carbs are okay too so unless shes rooted it'll probably scrub up okay with a kit and pump.
I did a quicky donk swap with an old Iseki orchard tractor years ago for a mates old man, He had a few old Volvos kicking around to we nicked a B20 redblock 4 cyl auto and made it work with some cheap RHS and some redgum fence posts and the old 4 speed manual.
Half a pack of CIG sticks and an old transarc and a few borrowed ratchet straps.
The old bloke shat flames about the fenceposts and the arc rods but he soon came round with the Inter bubbling around the 20 acres with a 4 foot mowing deck behind it.
Not even close to nice and solid like your Cat but im told it was still running nearly 40 years later.... I reckon it was the Italia race paint we added :-)

Another beaut vid thanks Steve. Love the old Cat ... like something out of Mad Max. I'm a great fan of the old red Holdens. 186 was my engine of choice. I've seen an old relic forklift years ago running an old Holden repower- so quiet and smooth.
I'm still in mourning since GM shut Holden so we can't lose your channel as well. It's fair dinkum man cave stuff, complete with cool things, old memories, junk and a few cold snacks to round it all off. Looking forward to 2025 👍 BTW the 318 in the Cat would be a beast but let's keep it red for now 😊

Hi Jim thanks for reaching out mate.
Yes it has opened my eyes to the amount of different people and personalities out there. It’s unbelievable. Most are great people, but then you get a real parasite that judges your life and ability on a 20 second clip, after spending all weekend most times filming the editing it down to a 25 minute video. Can be extremely frustrating, but I’m learning very quickly not to worry about it and I’m the stronger one for having a go.
It’s positive blokes like you that will keep the channel going mate. Thank you 🙏🙏

First time watcher. What a great channel you have. AND YES, Holden 6's are very much underrated. It was awesome to see that 202 hauling that little CAT with ease..... AND pulling that huge Volvo...... Gotta say, growing up as a 66 vintage with these PowerPoint's and working on more than 1 or 2, I would never have imagined. Subscribed and liked and looking forward to more stuff as well as catching up on your already released stuff as well...... I did an engine swap on the D2 with an old Nuffield tractor. The motor on those sat on rails so it was easy to adapt them to the Cat. This is going back at least 40 years. I used it as a bulldozer for a while after the conversion then sold it on. I remember one of the tracks kept coming off so it had to go. I was around 20 years old at that time. Fun times.

Handy old piece of kit. Probably worth putting a kit through the carb. It may be worth adding a little fuel store as that old rubber in those fuel pumps doesn't like ethanol in the modern fuel. Back in the early 2000's you could still get lead replacement fuel.
